Great vids Phil... I'm no expert and play mainly Old Skool Soul & Motown stuff, but I did a similar basic PN test on several tracks about a year ago, and without doubt, to my untrained ear, virtually all the finalised PN tracks sounded much better and 'Richer' in tone. The difference in the results was especially marked when it came to those Old Skool classics. The obvious benefit is also the audio levels being made the same. So... I have patiently gone through thousands of my library tracks in PN and I'm more than happy with the new sound. I would def' recommend the software to anyone who wants to 'enhance' their sound. Keep up the good work mate... very informative and you're a natural on here.

Set the volume db to around 9.5-10, this will allow you to have all knobs including trim at 12 o clock on the mixer. It's also close to original volume, so some tracks will have their volume increased/decreased marginally to bring them in line. I have clipped peaks on, warmth off, just original sound. Pitch adjustment off, this will wreck que points if you have it on because its adjusts beat grid for Rekordbox.

Yeah I'm more leaning towards snake oil. All though my mind could be changed especially if they made the software able to be trial for a period of time. I'm willing to give it a chance, but I don't think I'm willing to spend a $100 in order to find out. One of the reasons I came to thisvideo which was super helpful, but I"m still thinking... Wait so is he getting benefit from it? Noticable? What about the mastering that the original artist and team produced? Shouldn't I be trusting them? I'm thinking this could be extremely powerful for ripping vinyl, but for a random 100 tracks off beatport are we going to see a huge difference?

This is really well done. I've been using both MIK and PN for years for similar reasons as you. One huge tip I'd like to stress is that it's best to turn off that added warmth and fix pitch (and even fix clipped peaks, honestly) and just use PN to batch normalize your tracks. Also, hugely, no matter whether you're dropping lossless or lossy files into PN, always export to a lossless format so you aren't lossy compressing an already lossy compressed file. For me, I have PN set to export as wav and then I use iTunes to convert that file to apple lossless. That's always been my workflow and I think PN can actually export to apple lossless but I can't remember. Just...whatever you, don't convert a PN'd file back into a lossy format (like mp3) for the love of God. This is a good time to establish a truly independent folder for your curated DJ tracks if you haven't already done so.

Great informative video. Also, there is NEVER too much info. As a dj/musician that's also a sound engineer and tech, the VAST number of djs NEED to learn about this stuff. I'm sure we aren't too far away from Dj software including a loudness standard algorithm to avoid this all together. Plus metering on most dj controllers are so far from accurate they are practically useless, just like the autogain features. I got so fed up, I run all my tracks through Izotope Ozone auto mastering and then adjust all the parameters to my liking. Now all my track are much more uniform in both loudness and frequency response. Basically what all us djs are doing now, is what radio stations have done for the last 40 years.

Hi Phil, thanks for this video. I use Patinum Notes for about 2 years now and actually I'm not as satisfied as I might think I should be. When processing the tracks to the program, it seems like all of the dynamics are gone. Example, this track made was a big eye opener for me: "E.R.N.E.S.T.O, Arango - Bochica (Original Mix)". When I listen to the original file and the new one created by Platinum Notes, I can hear all of my bass is gone when processing it through PN. Personally I think the function "enable clipped peak..." screwed up all of the dynamics because when this is not turned on, the processed track by PN is almost/exactly the same as the original one, can't hear the difference. Let me know your thoughts! All the best, Cheers!

I thought PN sounded better on the A/B split. But I've tuned my ears for years to hear very slight differences. Question for Phil: Should I get the lossless file version of a track when I download from Beatport if I use PN? Or is 320kbps still okay? I do an EDM podcast thats a continual (oldskool now?) DJ mix, and I primarily mix it all using Traktor. It's a PAIN in the ARSE to try and get the audio levels of the songs to match up perfectly even though Traktor attempts to do it, so Platinum Notes would be a Godsend. You don't want your listeners having to adjust the volume throughout the mix. So I end up spending too much time editing the volume levels in my DAW after it's mixed.

I think these programs along with beat sync are awesome tools if not heavily relied on. I still try to manually beatmatch, trusting my ears to normalize volume and know when two songs go well together. Phil has a good amount of experience with DJing, as do a lot of us. I'm so happy that I learned how to DJ on vinyl in the 90's and even still to this day the majority of my DJing has been seleting playlists and tracks on the fly and manually beatmatching, however. My latest hardware (past 10 15 years) tells me the BPM, I rarely use Master/Sync but I first set the tempos to match (why wouldn't I?) with Pioneer CDJs you don't have to spend 20 seconds adjusting tempo, it cuts it down to like 5 seconds or less, of course we are still going to use the platter and minor adjustments in pitch to ensure it stays on point. But that's just because we are human and dropping th track in sometimes it's slightly off and you use you eras to figure that out. I hear a lot of people say what you just did and mate, it just doesn't make a whole lot of sense. I'm also a programmer and over 20 years new frameworks and tools have come out and I learn them, of course I have the experience of doing it the hard way, but if we use the technology to help, we find out job getting easier and leaves more room for creativity and less possibility of disasters.

@djnachos74

In my experience, as PN creates a new file, you need to add cues, color codes etc again cause most setting are saved in the DJ software's database. So, before handling the tracks in my software I prepped them with MIK & PN. Another thing that worked more or less: I'm working with Virtual DJ. When I rename the original track in file explorer, I get an error in my VDJ playlist. The track is still listed, but it's not available. VDJ offers the possibility to search for the missing track. But instead of linking to the original renamed track, I select the newly created PN track.
