I have been a gigging and studio guitarist for over 50 years. During that time I have owned many Gibson, Fender, Gretsch, Rickenbacker and other guitars. Today’s Fenders, Gibsons and Gretsches are just not being made to the same standards they were 50 or more years ago. For one third the price one can purchase a PRS SE model guitar that will be as good, if not better, better quality than any Gibson made today for under $4,000. For $4,000 one can purchase a PRS Core model the is superb in every way.

I returned a Fender Professional 2 Precision Bass for far worse flaws. Every screw was wonky in the pickguard. One screw was so bad it broke the wood wall into the electronics cavity. The truss rod hole was offside. The pickguard was lifting and warped. An 61 SG I looked recently had a truss rod cover that was clearly wonky. These things would annoy me for life.

As always, appreciate your real world, boots-on-the-ground look at this kinda stuff. I've recently been considering adding a used SG Standard to the stable, and I would expect to find a used example looking something like this: some cosmetic finish flaws, some bumps and scuffs, but in otherwise excellent condition for significantly less than MSRP. And that's great. Brand new from the factory for $2k? Not in my house either. Back she goes! It's a reminder that the US has higher-paid labor, not necessarily better labor. There is a distinction, and the two are not mutually exclusive.

If the back of the headstock has a natural finish, it's a good way to tell if the open-book profile is spot on. You can see the wings they glue on through a clearcoat because their grain is different, and both should be the same width. I was able to negotiate a free $550 Blackstar HT5R-MKII combo and a 10 pack of D'addario strings out of Sweetwater because whoever sanded the headstock on my Std 50s LP goldtop went a bit heavy on one side. I'm talking a very minimal amount. Like, not even 2/64's... and the ground wire from the pickup selector was loose, so I just soldered it back tight. It was already a replacement for the same model that had major finish flaking issues. So it was either go through another swap or negotiate. I negotiated because this LP is under 9 lbs, has no finish issues, has a really dark fretboard, and plays like butter. Unfortunately, there's always gonna be flaws with Gibson production guitars. Of course there's exceptions but they're uncommon. I feel like I made the right move. If it was my only guitar, then I'd nitpick until I got a perfect one, or maybe even look at the Custom Shop, but I already have a sick stable of really good guitars so I can accept this small, nearly undetectable flaw... especially with the bargain I got for it.

I got a SG Modern 2021 in November 2021, I opened the case and all four clear knobs were shattered and the guitar wasn't well placed into the case. I emailed Gibson about it explaining in great detail the state of the guitar when I opened the case and sent them pictures at every angle. I got a response asking "what exactly is wrong?" and "send the serial number of the broken piece", emphasis on piece not the serial number of the guitar. 1. Identified the problem and sent them pictures. 2. How in the world would I know a serial number of clear knobs that aren't sold separately anywhere. The pickup noise was driving me insane until I moved the ground wire into a proper position. The Action was also way too low and Neck needed to be readjusted, so much for their setup job. Honestly it's ridiculous. The guitar was literally a few days out of the factory and in that condition. $2400 wasn't worth it and I will never buy anything from Gibson again.

that is why i only buy from smaller shops of which i know they inspect the guitar. the scuffmarks on the side could have very well come from shipping, my sg isn't completely tight in its case with the lid closed, around the sides its tight, front to back not so much. so it might be able to slide a bit causing scuff marks. Nitro finishes are very prone to scuffs scratches and dings. whiping it down after playing will most likely create some swirls and tiny scratches.out of all colors black is the one that shows them most clearly. I must admit on the horn and near the neck is just bad sanding from factory. the tooling marks on the binding are on just about every gibson as it stands proud of the fretboard before getting filed down to make the fretnibs. as you said that could easily be fixed with some sandpaper and about 15 minutes of work. im glad all of my gibsons came in just about perfect. and the scratches and dings on mine got there from playing
