My mom just got to America, she has a masters in English and early childhood education. I got her job as a teachers aide, and helped her build an online course where she charges to teach English to other immigrants.

Never discourage anyone from further Certifications, especially in areas of Specializations…. That’s is a huge area for one’s private business or a “side hustle” for numerous contractual consultancies.

Going to do masters and PHD. without having a valid reason for it is what I think is not a smart move. Doing certification in courses like data analysis is a smart move .

@@Lunchclubb A postgraduate certification in any field gives one a better understanding in that area of study to avoid a Dunning-Kruger scenario. One should not embark in ANY level of study if it is not relevant with one’s goal. There are also postgraduate specializations in Law, Medicine, Finance etc……that are drastically needed & trusted relative to the “generalist” undergrad…. That is why a number of companies /organizations routinely sent employees to participate in further training and workshops..Experience has shown that one can gain a vast wealth of experience in the relevant industry before embarking in one’s private business in those areas….. whether it is Medicine, Plumbing, Finance, etc. I imagine that a lot of relatively new immigrants are migrating with undergraduate or other such certifications in IT, nursing etc and experience from their home country - most of whom initially seek a 9-5 job - and hoping to present a competitive CV, before going into their own business

@@Lunchclubb Doing certification in “needlework” is a smart move if that is one’s area of interest. New immigrants should not limit themselves to nursing, carers, medicine & IT.

When West Indians started coming to England in the 50s, 60s, etc, they were forced to put their money together and bought houses which were very easy to purchase at that time. They rented out rooms to other Caribbean people who couldn’t get places to rent, nor did they qualify for social housing. My grandfather bought a 7-bedroom house in 1964 in London for which he paid £4,000 - now it’s worth £1.5 million. It was the same story for most of the Caribbean people and their offsprings also aimed to purchase their own homes. That’s why home ownership in London and other parts of the UK is common among many Caribbean people. My uncles and aunts and other family members later went into the property business and bought several houses which they rented out or sold on to buy further houses. Nowadays it’s more difficult to get on the property ladder but many people of Caribbean heritage are property owners in London and other parts of the UK, with many older generation living in mortgage free properties worth thousands or millions!

MY BELOVED BROTHER, I COULDN'T HAVE AGREED WITH YOU MORE. I HAVE BEEN LIVING IN THE UK FOR 40 YEARS PLUS. TRUST ME I HAVE SEEN IT ALL. OUR AFRICAN BROTHERS AND SISTERS LIVING IN EUROPE ARE THE PROBLEM TO THEMSELVES. They always have this mindset of EUROPE IS A BIRD OF ROSES. THEREFORE YOU DARE NOT TELL THEM OTHERWISE. LIVING ABOVE THEIR MEANS IS ONE OF THEIR WEAKNESSES AS WELL AS ENVY. YOU HAVE JUST ARRIVED AND WANT TO ACQUIRE WHAT SOMEONE WHO HAS BEEN IN THE COUNTRY FOR CENTURIES WITHIN A SPACE OF TIME. ARE YOU NOT A JOKER? IN MY HUMBLE OPINION, OUR PEOPLE HAVE A LOT TO LEARN GOING FORWARD. Blessings from here YOUR EXPOSITION IS ALWAYS ON POINT. MUCH LOVE FROM HERE

Your advice is great but i totally disagree with you on the House issue ***
@Lunchclubb
Ай бұрын
Investing in a house is one of the options. Index funds are another option. As long as you don't put the money on liabilities, you will be fine.
@pamwechete85
Ай бұрын
@Lunchclubb again I agree with you on not investing in liabilities, however I don't agree on that issue of encouraging people not not invest in buying or building a house in Africa. Remember only in Africa is where we are able to buy a house cash without taking a bond from the bank where you will end up paying it back for 25 to 30yrs.
