Hey Austin, I really enjoyed your lecture and found your insights thought-provoking! I wanted to share a couple of thoughts that came to mind. It seems like the broader context of App Store economics might have been a bit underrepresented. Apple’s 30% revenue cut is pretty standard across platforms, and while it’s a big ask, it does provide developers with access to a secure, well-curated marketplace. Also, I think Apple’s strict control over the App Store plays a big role in maintaining the user experience and security, which are key to the brand’s value and customer trust. Lastly, I feel that Apple’s long-term strategy, with its focus on hardware and calculated risks, has often led to market leadership, even if it doesn’t always have immediate developer buy-in. Just some friendly food for thought! Looking forward to more of your content!

Yes. I think It's because of this trust that customers can spend money so easily on an app without worrying. It's also because of that the developer can quickly launch a product and be sure that the money will land securely on him account...

hey!! totally agree with you here. in fact, this video started out as an attempt at rationalizing Apple’s choices around the Patreon saga, but ended up bending back toward my belief that these reputation-defining decisions in the short term may break the pattern of the broader history that you speak of. that said, i totally see the value proposition of the App Store (kzitem.info/news/bejne/lH-XtoejgIaFo5g) & still appreciate its design to this day. i just also happen to think that the early sentiment that it was an “everybody wins” proposition has seriously shifted in the last 15 years

@@uncoverage I think I understand... Maybe it's the real question. Is it really an everybody wins situation.😅😅 It is complicated

Apple is so large, and are practically required to keep growing because they're publicly traded, they are probably at a cross-roads. The Vision Pro wasn't a massive success, and hardware is hard. They may literally be out of options to make more money with their existing line ups and services. The only road forward is what we view as gross/damaging practises.

That's how companies work. When investors find that there's no more room for growth, they take their money elsewhere. This is bad for the speculative market, but for those that invested reasonably, they have nothing to worry about.

in some regards, yes. though Apple has tended to focus more on long-term, brand-strengthening growth, rather than short-term, more immediately lucrative growth

Agree a killer app is key but the Apple Vision Pro’s biggest criticism is a lack of apps taking advantage of the new hardware possibilities… after criticism over price and comfort of course, which are also limiting factors for developers.

Interesting to hear about your parents. Like Apple, you seem to be the result of mixing technology and liberal arts.

I had no idea Patreon was an app. I guess the marketing I’ve seen made me think it was a website. I’ve never considered Apple a company that cares about consumers or creators. I don’t even think they really care about developers, besides their own. I think the Apple Watch is a good example. I like when you mentioned the solutions older products fulfilled, and you went into the trust aspect a bit. I think the iPod touch made people trust Apple, and now those people are used to the OS and don’t want to change despite Apple’s many problems/disadvantages. P.s. my fav part of this video is when you mentioned asking your parents if you could get a KZitem account 🥲

i believe it’s primarily a website, but they also have an app, which must get tons of usage given their strategic decision to stay on the App Store!
