I work at a gas station, and it's actually annoying how much lottery many people play every day. People come into the store EVERY DAY and will stay for an hour plus scratching tickets. It's actually infuriating, because I can't get shit done from going back and forth cashing and selling tickets. It wouldn't be so bad if it was only one or two people, but it's 10+ at the store I work at. It's also infuriating seeing people just blow money on something that is fake. No one really wins the lottery. I've had a lady come in and buy a whole roll of $30 tickets, a roll of $10 tickets, and six $50 tickets, totalling $1,500. That is ridiculous. Must be nice being able to blow that much paper just for some slightly thicker paper that may give you even more paper. But the government gets a cut of that paper. The world is phucked.

Toho and Kurosawa did win in court, but Sergio Leone went on to make the trilogy anyway. despite Fistful being a shot-for-shot remake of Yojimbo, the plagiarism having been proven empirically, it is still rarely talked about. there's getting away with it officially, and *getting away with it* culturally.

In China, there are two types of official lotteries: 體彩 (Sport Lottery) and 福利彩 (Welfare Lottery). Scratch cards can only be bought in official lottery shops. However, most people who bet on sports choose to do so online. These underground platforms are illegal, but the betting odds in the official sports lottery are just too low. That's why people choose online betting with better odds. I know this may sound foolish, but in a culture that encourages people to do anything to reach the top, this actually makes sense. Cheating is a part of their culture. You can see that they would rather have false hope from scratch cards than work on themselves. I am aware of these things because I used to work at one of these betting companies. Almost all of our customers were there to "get rich or die trying."

The movies are fine and entertaining, and also commercially successful. The issue is that they're the only type of plots being allowed past censors. It's not the first time largely harmless creative output is throttled in the crib by the Chinese government, and won't be the last. It's bad enough when state censorship prevents you from making a movie that could even be considered mildly political or sensitive. It's worse when you have to make sure it's all upbeat and happy within those confines. And since not all the censorship is clearly defined on paper, what happens is that directors and producers will play it safe within those limited confines. It's frustrating, because there's so much untapped potential -- and yet all you'll get are Imperial period dramas and modern comedies. You get the occasional bright spot like Ne Zha (sparking a resurgence in chinese animation), but it sorta feels like it's succeeding in spite of the environment rather than because of it.
