For your polar pattern testing, please use a directivity graph for better representation. As an experienced audio engineer I was disappointed with the complete lack of mentioning the distortion. While I do agree with the conclusion, it's a great mic for the price, you massively undervalued the RE20 or the MKH50 here. They sound way cleaner and more precise. I am aware the problem on the FiFine this is likely the preamp or ADC rather than the mic itself, but since it's integrated in the mic it's still part of it.
@andrew6978

I would wager he's just clipping something later on. It's hard to make a mic capsule distort in front of guitar amps if you set the gain properly, let alone speaking volume. He could be clipping the internal DAC but that is even more worrisome when he can't even get the gain right to avoid clipping. Bottom line, this is almost 100% user error.

I'm saying this out of love for the channel as I grew up watching Linus, Luke, and the overall channel grow. The following what I have to say is not out of hate but for concern and overall love as a long time fan. Before Steve's video came out, I too have noticed the amount of errors, inconsistencies, later corrections that take place, and the fact that there isn't a lot of accountability being shown really concerns me. The employees, many of which us fans respect and admire with their vast knowledge and charisma, even said that it's "quantity over quality" when it comes to the videos. If memory serves me right, back in the old LTT days, there was a time when videos weren't uploaded daily but rather I think 3-5 times per week, and the quality of the videos showed tremendously! Even back then if something was wrong, the team took accountability. But now it's seems there's been a shift. Even watching this video, there's plenty of things such as high pass filter being on or not. I know this channel isn't a mic/audio review channel, but a good example of someone who thoroughly reviews microphones and audio gear is Podcastage, who tests the equipment through various scenarios like voice, instruments, the polaroid pattern, proximity effect, etc. showing the piece of equipment's full capabilities through real case usage including people who will use it at their computer desks and visual and good representative graphs. Now, I doubt Linus will see this, but this next part is directly to you. I'm not entirely sure what you might be thinking right now with Steve's video coming up, as well as seeing the comments from this video alone, but the voices who're telling you these things like something needs to change, "we want better quality videos", "take better accountability", etc., aren't coming out of place of hate, but concern and I would even say love. The community loves the channel, loves what you've created, what the company will become later with labs and other projects you probably have stored in the pipeline we don't even know about yet, but please take what we're saying, as fans who love this channel, into consideration. Listen to the criticism, take accountability where it's needed, and just overall strive to do better. We all want to see you succeed and continue to grow.

As a longtime viewer, I respect Linus and LMG a lot, as well as what they're trying to accomplish. Gamers Nexus notwithstanding, however, I've personally noticed an uneasy amount of discrepancies, corrections, and marks of rushed content throughout recent videos. As LMG grows into the technical reviewing and data collection side of things with Labs, I really do think it's important that a little extra time is taken to ensure presented information is accurate. I understand the financial reasons for releasing videos fast, but if doing so harms the legitimacy of every piece of content on the channels, it just isn't right. For all it's worth, I work in video production (TV/streaming broadcast at the moment) and know from experience that rushing content just leads to unsatisfied employees and a needlessly stunted final product. If not from me, please take a lesson from all the game devs we criticize for rushing games-rushed content almost always shows.

They're already burnt out, i can assure that. Between the things we see on camera and the ones we don't, its very likely they all work with a drained soul, making their work (both to us and to them) less and less interesting in retrospective. Its likely why a lot of mistakes go through and have to be edited in post, because the people that are actually in the video are likely too tired after making just that to try and retake it, even if they get paid very well.

I love both Linus and the team - as well as Steve and his team at GN. But he needs to understand that some things can't just be thrown under the rug as if it were "a simple mistake" or "poor communication". What are we talking about here? It's crazy that it was Steve from GN who had the guts to tell it like it is. Not packed up nicely by LMG editors, seriously. You can't just trim a clip on YT and then continue to trash the manufacturer because you failed to do your job. Just as it is not normal to "sell" the intellectual property of others at an "auction". the problem here man, is that Linus is 100% responsible for what they do and not do with al the things at LMG so what happened with Billet is 100% his responsability, and with other things like they do a video that has an error, they all know it has it, but they throw it away because he is not spending extra time and money to do it right, like this video, he should make a video making himself accountable for all this things, that he is not doing because of his own sake, because i saw one clip of GN where Linus was throwing BS to the cooler and the man who is with him had a face like "for god's sake take me out of here" nobody wants to keep working there with Linus because he is not like before anymore, so he failed, he should let everybody do their job like is supposed to and move away from there, he alone is killing this channel

As much as I love watching every LTT video a day, it's super annoying seeing these issues and the videos seemingly abruptly cutting to sponsor without actually ending and giving us closure. I think they could manage it, but it won't be easy (financially) on their end.
@TheDuelist
Жыл бұрын
I remember him talking about the abrupt cuts to sponsor on the WAN show a couple years ago. It's so that the viewer never feels that the video is about to end. So it's all for viewer retention throughout the video. When YT recommends videos, it usually does it on a couple things, likes and views are some of them, but another huge one is how many viewers stayed through the whole video. A lot of people may not know this, and it was a shock to me until I started making videos myself, but I can see how many people leave one of my videos within the first 10 seconds and it's usually about 50%. LTT might have different numbers, but if I get a few thousand views on a video, 1,500 of those views left in the first 10 seconds. So keeping the viewer retention graph as high for as long as possible is a big player in YT recommending your videos to other people.

As for Inaccuracies he said labs is "a work in progress that is very much not done and that we've communicated needs to be treated as such". His reasoning for not making larger changes and just putting text corrections up "Listing the wrong amount of cache on a table for a CPU review is sloppy, but given that our conclusions are drawn based on our testing, not the spec sheet, it doesn't materially change the recommendation." and "That doesn't mean these things don't matter." The agreement was that they, Billet, receive their waterblock back because it’s their one and only best prototype they have, but LTT decided, and without the permission off the owners, to auction it at LTX. Now Billet is screwed because their prized prototype is gone and most possible auctioned to a competitor company to be cloned. Please give your team more time to make content they can be proud of. The next product launch can wait. 11+ videos a week can wait. Get your core content back in order and take more pride in due diligence and your employees. LTT was great when LTT cared and took time to do what they do. Nearly every piece of content from LTT can be broken down to "This thing coincidentally broke", "I spent HOW much??", and "I water-cooled my pc with a pool simply because", with no evergreen or informational content being produced with any kind of regularity. Further, while I'm not a GN fan, your response of "they didn't do due diligence" is a bad one. They had no responsibility to contact you and they took all of the evidence that the public sees and boiled it down into a cohesive video. You guys did dumb/bad things, they called LMG out for it, and that's okay. Not everyone is out to get you; most people just want good content that doesn't actively harm other people for no reason. Lastly, constant, often, and repeated corrections should not be a status quo. Every now and again, sure, who cares. But, when you actively say something harming to a brand or product in video and then correct it with text at the bottom, you are taking a lazy and lackluster approach to journalism. Is this all a big deal? Each individual one, in a vacuum, can be excused and fixed. All of these combined shows a greater problem. This will inevitably blow over and be a nothing burger, but selling a small companies only prototype and then being heated that people are mad about it is an insane take. Improperly testing a product, giving it a bad word (regardless if it actually made a difference), and being heated when you're called out for it is an insane take. Being content with crunch, lackluster content, rushed testing, lazy corrections, and being heated when you're called out for it and excusing it because "growing pains" is an insane take. I genuinely enjoy content produced by LMG as a whole, but I had noticed the crazy amount of corrections, rushed content, and "meh" inspiring content before GN spoke out about it. I thought that there was a lack of content because of the focus on labs, but it seems more like bad communication from Linus, crunch for writers and editors, and a mindset of quantity over quality has been the contributing factor. LMG can do better, and it should do better. This is a transitional period, but that is not an excuse for bad reporting. I have faith that it *can* get better, but only a few can decide if it *will* get better or if it will be brushed under the rug and be allowed to just blow over.

Well put. I really hope the criticism is taken seriously at least internally. Shooting the messenger doesn't help. Sloppy videos like those exposed by GN can annihilate the substantial investments LMG made to the labs. Investing millions in automatic testing, a sound testing chamber, lab staff and more, and then not investing enough time in the actual end product to uphold the same standards makes no sense from any perspective. @@utubekullanicisiLinus' statement: "There won't be a big WAN Show segment about this or anything. Most of what I have to say, I've already said, and I've done so privately. To Steve, I expressed my disappointment that he didn't go through proper journalistic practices in creating this piece. He has my email and number (along with numerous other members of our team) and could have asked me for context that may have proven to be valuable (like the fact that we didn't 'sell' the monoblock, but rather auctioned it for charity due to a miscommunication... AND the fact that while we haven't sent payment yet, we have already agreed to compensate Billet Labs for the cost of their prototype). There are other issues, but I've told him that I won't be drawn into a public sniping match over this and that I'll be continuing to move forward in good faith as part of 'Team Media'. When/if he's ready to do so again I'll be ready. To my team (and my CEO's team, but realistically I was at the helm for all of these errors, so I need to own it), I stressed the importance of diligence in our work because there are so many eyes on us. We are going through some growing pains - we've been very public about them in the interest of transparency - and it's clear we have some work to do on internal processes and communication. We have already been doing a lot of work internally to clean up our processes, but these things take time. Rome wasn't built in a day, but that's no excuse for sloppiness. Now, for my community, all I can say is the same things I always say. We know that we're not perfect. We wear our imperfection on our sleeves in the interest of ensuring that we stay accountable to you. But it's sad and unfortunate when this transparency gets warped into a bad thing. The Labs team is hard at work hard creating processes and tools to generate data that will benefit all consumers - a work in progress that is very much not done and that we've communicated needs to be treated as such. Do we have notes under some videos? Yes. Is it because we are striving for transparency/improvement? Yeah... What we're doing hasn't been in many years, if ever.. and we would make a much larger correction if the circumstances merited it. Listing the wrong amount of cache on a table for a CPU review is sloppy, but given that our conclusions are drawn based on our testing, not the spec sheet, it doesn't materially change the recommendation. That doesn't mean these things don't matter. We've set KPIs for our writing/labs team around accuracy, and we are continually installing new checks and balances to ensure that things continue to get better. If you haven't seen the improvement, frankly I wonder if you're really looking for it... The thoroughness that we managed on our last handful of GPU videos is getting really incredible given the limited time we have for these embargoes. I'm REALLY excited about what the future will hold. With all of that said, I still disagree that the Billet Labs video (not the situation with the return, which I've already addressed above) is an 'accuracy' issue. It's more like I just read the room wrong. We COULD have re-tested it with perfect accuracy, but to do so PROPERLY - accounting for which cases it could be installed in (none) and which radiators it would be plumbed with (again... mystery) would have been impossible... and also didn't affect the conclusion of the video... OR SO I THOUGHT... I wanted to evaluate it as a product, and as a product, IF it could manage to compete with the temperatures of the highest end blocks on the planet, it still wouldn't make sense to buy... so from my point of view, re-testing it and finding out that yes, it did in fact run cooler made no difference to the conclusion, so it didn't really make a difference. Adam and I were talking about this today. He advocated for re-testing it regardless of how non-viable it was as a product at the time and I think he expressed really well today why it mattered. It was like making a video about a supercar. It doesn't mater if no one watching will buy it. They just wanna see it rip. I missed that, but it wasn't because I didn't care about the consumer.. it was because I was so focused on how this product impacted a potential buyer. Either way, clearly my bad, but my intention was never to harm Billet Labs. I specifically called out their incredible machining skills because I wanted to see them create something with a viable market for it and was hoping others would appreciate the fineness of the craftsmanship even if the product was impractical. I still hope they move forward building something else because they obviously have talent and I've watched countless niche water cooling vendors come and go. It's an astonishingly unforgiving market. Either way, I'm sorry I got the community's priorities mixed-up on this one, and that we didn't show the Billet in the best light. Our intention wasn't to hurt anyone. We wanted no one to buy it (because it's an egregious waste of money no matter what temps it runs at) and we wanted Billet to make something marketable (so they can, y'know, eat). With all of this in mind, it saddens me how quickly the pitchforks were raised over this. It also comes across a touch hypocritical when some basic due diligence could have helped clarify much of it. I have a LONG history of meeting issues head on and I've never been afraid to answer questions, which lands me in hot water regularly, but helps keep me in tune with my peers and with the community. The only reason I can think of not to ask me is because my honest response might be inconvenient. We can test that... with this post. Will the "It was a mistake (a bad one, but a mistake) and they're taking care of it" reality manage to have the same reach? Let's see if anyone actually wants to know what happened. I hope so, but it's been disheartening seeing how many people were willing to jump on us here. Believe it or not, I'm a real person and so is the rest of my team. We are trying our best, and if what we were doing was easy, everyone would do it. Today sucks. Thanks for reading this." My take is ltt has time to change, but linus dosent seem interested. The statement was made 12 hours ago the video has gained significant momentum since then so hopefully it becomes something ltt cant ignore. If they are entering the space of detailed reviews they need to be true and accurate. From Gn's video we can see they are not. Anybody who says this is gn being unhappy about labs is mistaken and a biased LTT fanboy. You lose nothing by this video being published there is no benefit to GN, this is for the benefit of the consumer and the audience. Linus' comments indicate that he doesn't intend to make a significant change which has significantly reduced my faith in labs. LTT need to address this and state what they are going to change, Or risk jeopardising the future of labs and LMG's credibility.

@@ltipst2962 This exactly. I have been a fan of Linus for over a decade and certain things have had me feeling iffy about all this expansion. Things feeling less personal, Linus being there as a required face to read a script prepared by a writer. The entire point of KZitem was to have that sense of informality and connection to the host - over what was previously available. Now it just feels like it is regressing to something like the very NCIX channel that Linus left. Seems like when you turn a KZitem channel corporate, you lose the plot a bit - and your audience is MOST DEFINITELY going to notice.

Just watched the GN video and my faith in Linus has been shaken to its core. Been watching Linus since mid- 2019 and I just came here to say to please please PLEASE listen to your staff- many of whom are very experienced and have been with the company for many years were all saying to SLOW DOWN on video production. Another channel I watched recently slowed down video production and eliminated 2 video uploads a week and replaced video upload days with streaming instead. Linus, PLEASE listen to your staff on this before you turn into the very thing you hate, or drive away all your talent. We expect better from you. If it's quantity or quality, we want quality. Stop chasing infinite growth. ((Also HOLY CRAP the Billet Labs fiasco omg. Saying on the WAN show that paying $100-$500 of staff time to re-test was not worth it to you to provide accurate information was reprehensible to me, ESPECIALLY after all the bragging you do about being very rich. You probably tanked that small company's entire reputation, maybe even killed them. Where are your ethics? Where is doing what is right? Too rich to care? Is it just about getting the video out now?))

Audio engineer here- the plots don't actually look that unexpected. I think the problem is that your plots have way, way too wide of a dynamic range displayed. The most typical plot range in professional microphone spec sheets is 30-40 dB, while here you've displayed 60 dB. Companies who make bad products intentionally share plots with very wide ranges to make the responses seem more flat... which is what you accidentally did here. ;) I recommend you consider a plot range of -15 to +10 dB (25 dB). Something cut or boosted more than that is useless to know anyway; it's either essentially inaudible or horrifically over-exaggerated compared to the rest of the spectrum. No one actually needs to see down beyond -15 dB unless you're showing a mic with legitimately impressive off-axis rejection (e.g. shotgun mics, some supercardioid SDC's like Gefell M310 or MKH50). It is also common to do 1/3-octave or 1/6-octave smoothing on mic curves to show the general shape of the response with less ripple (almost looks like 1/12th octave here?). Obviously it feels less accurate but it's more useful and less spaghetti. Typical studio cardioid LDC mics have intentional cuts and boosts in bands of up to about 4 dB in order to provide different colors or functions. Usually the goal is to make a mic as flat as possible from 50 Hz to 5k, then have a gradual, smooth air boost in the area of 1-3 dB centered usually around 9-10k to help with speech intelligibility and in diffuse field situations (e.g. recording at a distance), for example the famous AKG C12 or Neumann U87, the latter being ruler flat (+/- 1 dB) from 60k to 6k with a very careful and modest 2dB boost around 10k. The average listener can easily hear +/- 1 dB changes, and tweaks of even just 4-5 dB here or there can have extremely, catastrophically significant changes in the way a microphone sounds. The +3 dB band from 2-7k is exactly the sort of thing that will give a mic a very pinched sound, and the +5 dB at 12k is somewhat excessive in a mic designed for close working. The sudden dip around 15k is a bit too early and can cause a "lo-fi" feel to the mic. Most studio mics "wait" to boost HF until after 5k so you get a nice smooth air band around the 8-16k range, gradually tapering back to 0 or slightly below around 20k. Losing 10 dB by 50 Hz is also pretty catastrophically bad unless you get very, very close to the mic (Proximity Effect). That's basically trimming off the fundamental frequency of most lower-pitched voices. Almost all acceptable studio mics are at worst -3 dB at 50 Hz (case in point, the modern U87Ai is only -2 dB at 50 Hz). However, mics designed for close work like this often have a default cut to the lows, usually much more gradual than this, which is designed to counteract proximity effect at close distances (less than 6"). The shape of this curve needs to be very specific and depends on the exact distance and the construction of the microphone (single vs. dual diaphragm; headbasket design). It's also not disclosed whether this was done in an anechoic chamber much less what sort of setup was used. For all we know it was in an office room with some random sound source with unknown distortion or resonance characteristics. This would not do because the omni measurement mic will pick up sound significantly differently than the directional microphones being tested. If an anechoic chamber is not available, the distance should be minimized. The source of sound also needs to be actually able to respond across the entire frequency range tested. In a case like this, I would suggest showing both the industry standard 1m distance as well as a close-working distance (e.g. 10 cm), as different mics will have different behaviors with proximity effect due to differences in design and polar pattern (which changes over the frequency response as well)- which may make them suck at a distance and great up close or vice versa. 30cm is a weird choice imho because I doubt most people use such mics at 30cm distance. Even in studios, 15-20cm is generally more common. In radio, it is absolutely uncommon and explains the very deep loss of low frequencies in all the tests. I suppose this was done because well, 30cm = 1'. A good 180-degree rejection in a cardioid mic is about -15 dB, by the way. High-end single-diaphragm designs can push to 20-30 dB rejection in the central band of 200 Hz - 2k. 10 dB is more in the territory of a "wide cardioid" or "subcardioid". The fact that you only measure down to -14 dB should be a little concerning honestly; I am able to measure down to -20 dB on studio mics just using a phone speaker and a 10 cm distance in a relatively untreated room. Most LDC's cardioid pattern fall apart around 5-10k, by the way, when they convert over briefly to supercardioid due to the higher gradient contribution vs. pressure contribution in that range, before rapidly narrowing above 10k. That's why there's a big bump at 9k then a drop. Also, using a $70 measurement microphone designed for casual room acoustic measurements isn't exactly optimal. It is actually worse than that because the microphone isn't actually flat; it just has some calibration files where the manufacturer basically did exactly what you did but compared it to a "real" B&K measurement mic. So, in a sense, this is a "2nd order" microphone test where you're testing against a "virtual" microphone. A cheap electret condenser could potentially vary in response as it warms up; I've seen it with mics 5x the price. There is no indication as to the longevity, stability, or reliability of the measurement mic which is why laboratories and microphone test facilities use "real" measurement mics (B&K, Gefell, Earthworks, etc.) that have capsules designed specifically for stability and reliability. Even a Earthworks M23R, a "recording" Gefell M221 cap, or even a vintage used B&K measurement mic off ebay would be considerably more trustable. It's actually insanely easy to build a large diaphragm condenser mic that is linear 100-1000 Hz. Engineers were already building mics linear (+/- 1 dB) 100-12kHz in the 1930's and 40's no problem, and Chinese manufacturers are now getting very experienced at capsule design and manufacture. However, what's really hard to do is get linearity really low and really high, and getting exactly the sort of response you want while also getting the specific polar pattern/off-axis behavior you want. You run into all kinds of mechanical problems at those frequencies that are in short, difficult to solve for directional (pressure-gradient) capsule designs. Why are all the mics similarly not great then? It's because they're cheaply made; e.g. the capsule (the part that actually converts the sound pressure changes into electrons wiggling around in wires) is probably only $2-5. The headbasket and metalwork which protects the capsule also plays a major role in the tone of the mic and requires very careful design, material choice, and shaping to perform transparently. Even in XLR mics, decent options are very few and far between (basically just sE) until you get beyond $200, and they don't need to have any digital components so all that space and budget can go towards the capsule biasing and preamplifier. Professional studio mics, costing $1000+, have capsules that easily cost $200-500 alone, much less the metalwork and circuitry. Rather than the colorfully-voiced RE20 which is really more of a broadcast/radio mic, it would have been much more informative to see it measured compared to the MKH50 which is actually a legitimately very flat and highly respected studio & film audio mic due to the RF design. You should consider picking up a few legitimate studio LDC's and SDC's to compare, e.g. Neumann 87ai, 170/193; Gefell 930, 940, MT70S; Schoeps CMC1 w/ MK41; Sony C100; Audio-Technica AT4050, etc. These are all professional working microphones which are the backbone of just about every recording studio in the world. For a budget comparison, the Rode NT1, Aston Origin, or WA47jr are all decently regarded starter options in the $200-300 range.

@SamGossner
Жыл бұрын
@@brendonc9734 Certainly, it should be passable, on-axis, in an anechoic chamber, at specific temperature and humidity. My main concern is stability and accuracy over time and varying conditions. B&K for example has actual tests showing their mics are stable in frequency response within a fraction of a decibel for decades and across wide ranges of temperatures and humidities, even fluctuations in supplied voltage, as do other manufacturers. Also guaranteed is the polar pattern/off-axis behavior, as well as the response down to very low frequencies. Special capsule constructions and materials are used for this purpose, which I severely doubt are even remotely possible in a microphone less than several hundred dollars. It is basically an error multiplier: you have to trust that the manufacturer of this product genuinely calibrated it correctly (not to mention effectively) on top of trusting the physical device itself. The mic they used is probably physically a $20-40 mic turned into a $70 "modelling mic" designed for consumers to calibrate home theater setups once and then forget about in a box, but they present it as if it is a professional audio measurement device. Ultimately I just don't get how a company that makes millions and wants to present itself as making "laboratory-grade measurements" of products can't afford an entry-level measurement mic when I'm sitting next several Gefell M221's I bought with my own money just to make slightly better recordings. They had no problem paying for RF chambers and power supply meters but somehow a professional measurement microphone was just a step too far?

Just like all the other big tech channels, you shouldn't be using KZitem channels with conflicts of interest to determine where your money goes. LTT, GN, Jayztwocents, hardware unboxed all have conflicts of interest and if you think any of them are above that conflict of interest; you need to re-evaluate how you place your trust. Tech videos on KZitem are just for entertainment, if a creator is taking sponsorships from companies that make products in the same category as products that creator reviews, your trust in their impartiality should drop to 0 immediately, otherwise you're just another sucker, repeating a tale as old as currency itself.
