The last moment when ian turned to face the camera and messed up the chess pieces, and that's when the feelings come in. You suddenly notice Ian losing his composure. He has been trying to keep his calm and assertiveness in the match, but at the end you notice his humanness. Compare to Ding, Ian is more of the traditional alpha male (or at least trying to be one). But in the end when everything is settled, that's when the true faces comes out.

Ding literally needs a movie like wtf. He wasn't even meant to play in world championship 🤯 - 1st Chinese chess champion - Played 30 classical games in a month to qualify for candidates since Karjakin was disqualified - Finished 2nd in candidates by beating Hikaru and only qualified to world championship because Magnus refused to defend his title - Down 1 point in the beginning of match, but equalizes it. Almost lost game 12 then made huge comeback, equalizing the match again - Ding's first win with black pieces against Ian was the last game, if it wasn't for his courage to go for rg6, the game would be draw - Beat Ian, 2nd ranking in the world, supported by his team with big names and have been previous world champion candidates. Does Ding even have a team backing him? idk Rapport maybe😂 - Made it difficult to enter the big leagues since China doesn't support him much and Chinese visa is crap. Pandemic made it hard to leave the country

Ding’s given name LiRen loosely stands for “stand-up person”. He acts with grace, humbleness, humility, and honesty. He solved his problems little by little and when given the opportunity to win, he took it.

Actually Ding's name comes from the Confucian Analects “己欲立而立人”. Li means to establish (i.e., stand up on a firm footing). The quotation basically means that if you want to become established (in terms of virtue), you establish others. It's really a lovely sentiment that does not argue for either self-interest or self-sacrifice, but links doing good for others with attaining one's own goals of goodness. Establishing others multiplies virtue for everyone, so how can you go wrong?

Ding was not in the Candidates until Sergey Karjakin was disqualified because of his political statements regarding the war. DIng had to play something like 20 or 30 games in a month in order to get enough activity to be considerate as a substitute to Karjakin. Next in the Candidates, Ding barely won a draw position against Hikaru Nakamura, which barely placed him in 2nd place, only half a point before Nakamura. Then he had to wait for Magnus to forfeit his title, or else the match would have been Magnus vs Ian. Then during the match against Ian, Ding was tailing behind most of the games. I think Ding was a slight 'underdog' for a couple reasons. He wasn't able to compete in any chess during the pandemic. He couldn't even qualify for Candidates 2022 due to Covid restrictions. FIDE changed some requirements, but he still had to play 26 required games in a month to compete for candidates last minute. In Candidates, he started with a crushing loss from Nepo followed by draws and becomes second to last in the placements. He was able to climb all the way back to 3rd after beating Rapport, Hikaru, and Fabi---and would only compete in Champions because of Magnus forfeiting.

Жыл бұрын
It's not disrespectful because he actually was. Ding is the better chess player, that I have no doubt. But the World Championship is about more than just chess. It's just as much about preparation and experience, two key areas that Ian had a HUGE advantage in. Ian had an army of seconds, many of them strong grandmasters and Vladimir Kramnik himself was part of Ian's team. Ding had just Rapport and (maybe) Xie Jun (former Women's Champion) and zero idea how to actually prepare for a championship match. Ian is also backed by a wealthy Russian who I won't say anything more about because that's not what this is about. But the point is that Ian had the vastly superior team and resources available to him in the months leading up to this event. All this is evident in the way Ding approached this match. He never played the same opening twice and tried to go for offbeat lines to get Ian out of his prep as soon as possible so Ding can actually play against Ian instead of playing against an engine. Oh yeah and did I mention Ding's prep was actually leaked mid-match? IMO it's almost a minor miracle Ding was able to win given what he was up against but he deserved it. He showed absolutely clinical endgame skill despite facing time pressure in the bulk of the games. That he was able to do it in the final rapid tiebreak, pressuring his opponent in an endgame where he simply showed his superiority - after trailing 4 times in the match mind you - you literally couldn't write a better script

He wasn't even supposed to play and he was called last minute because Sergei Karjakin couldn't go iirc. Then he only played the final because Magnus decided not to play, and even then, his second place in the candidates' was extremely hard fought and lucky to some degree. Nepo is an extremely strong player, he won the candidates with a good lead and was te runner-up for the previous world championship. What makes Ding so personable is that he lacks any kind of hybris despite his incredible strength. Nepo, on the other hand, clearly manages what he says outloud and sometimes does a bad job of it. It is very awkward watching him dodge questions, thinly veil his contempt for others, etc. Nepo is so not at ease with himself, it is hard to watch at times. Nepo is a brilliant chess player but has a lot of personal growth ahead of him. Underdog is to described when a player is a lot better than the other and expected to win 7-8 times out of 10. Nepo did have an edge before WCC, but it was like 45-55 or 40-60, not big of a gap to call Ding "underdog".

I know a lot of people recently come to know about ding! Ding was no underdog in this match. he was the only player to have more than 100 games of not any defeat in classical games later magnus broke his record but just so you know after fabi lost to magnus in WC. In a lot of people list Ding was the worthy player to dethrone him. considering his great record at rapid . and after Ding beat magnus to win Sinquefield Cup in 2019. he was the favorite to win candidates. but COVID happened, travel, emotions took a toll as could be seen in a pattern in games and ding's performance.

Good video, but surprised how no one mentions about the leaked preparation point (2:15) in the comments. By admitting to the leaked preparation hew would be more at a loss than anything. It was the best he could do at that point - to deny. It would not be a taint to Ian's victory because most likely Ian hadn't seen the leaked games earlier. Even if he had, it is totally legit Ding's team's mistake to have such a brutal leak, than Ian' s looking at some freely available online games. That would bring more questions on the same at the press conference, hence he denied.

I became fan of Ding after Steinfeld Cup final in 2019 against Magnus where he won a brilliant match with black against Magnus by sacrificing his queen. Magnus is the undisputed champ no denying that but I always felt like if anyone was gonna make Magnus run for his money is gonna be Ding. But when Covid hit Ding couldn't get access to tournaments because he was in China, he was out for almost 2years and then had to play many matches (I don't remember how many but it was a lot) in span of 4months to qualify for Candidates if I'm not wrong. So happy he won it and of course feel bad for Nepo.

As much as i like Ding for being a kind, shy, humble individual, i was rooting for Ian. I thought "finally, without Magnus, Ian will win". I thought he was better suited due to his outgoing personality and better English skills. Alas, turns out Magnus was not Ian's setback... Well done to Ding, despite all the challenges! I hope he gets a good translator or some nice lessons and i hope we get to hear more from him. Lovely man!
