I constantly think how the film industry is lacking a bit of original movies and shows. But it’s also very confusing. Everyone says something else about a movie that is so bad, because the critics say so, then someone you know tells you it was great. I honestly think remakes and reboots are fine, but we want something new and original. I’m a writer myself, and I want to see something new and non cliched.

I think you hit it on the nail. Reboots and remakes are safer because the studios know they have those ips and can bring back the original cast or change the cast. I mean a good example for a lot of people is Spider-Man. There is like 7 Spider-Man film projects and the reason each of them feels different is because people know the character and can really change a few things and they know people will buy a ticket. Also people who read come to the movies so they can critique the difference between the film and book, but it’s also because readers want to see the movie so they could see if the film is everything the imagined in their head.

I think the idea of this video is that that we have gotten to a point where almost every movie is a reboot or barely a remake of another original film. Spider Man is different because it came at a time when there was more originality and they were making it a reboot when not every other film at the time was one. Spider Man, therefore was fit for a reboot for its time and each one of them was a little creatively different. Today, there is lack of originality and just an opportunity to price gauge its audience which does not actually make these reboots and remakes good at all.

Remakes can be good if they take inspiration from a source and make it into something new. That is completly fine and valid. Sadly I think most people are upset, because some remakes do not feel orginal and that some franchises rely too much on nostalgia. It comes across as if filmmakers or showrunners don't bother enough anymore to create something original or write decent stories or characters as the rely too much on nostalgia and an already existing fanbase. I personally believe that remakes can have potential, if they are made with respect to the source material and tell a compelling story (for example Arcane or The Last Of Us).

I always try to make stuff that’s original and yes, it does involve taking inspiration from other work as well as the world and environment around you and what you enjoy as well, like merging it all together in a way to make something from your identity. I’ve been working on my own Marvel Universe and I have my own takes on characters, storylines, even new Storylines, different costumes, teams, etc etc. I’m making sure it’s true to what Marvel is to me but I also want to add my own spin to it. But even with that, I have my own original superhero universe that’s inspired by so many different superhero brands, and also different entertainment and stories outside of the superhero genre while weaving it into the genre somehow, so different types of characters, powers, backgrounds, genres and tones come into play. But yeah, listening to you talk about this really opened my eyes a bit more as I work non-stop in my creative writing and stories and I always try to subvert expectations, try something new, and finding the perfect balance in my stories that suits me personally so thanks a lot 😋👍

iced coffee! I mostly agree. It’s not often talked about that so many famous movies come from novels but is somewhat known among cinephiles and avid readers. I will say I do wish that even if studios remake things that they would make it their own! Not just modernize it or make it a musical. For example, ‘the Mask of Zorro’ has been made multiple times in the 20th century but the 1998 one with Antonio Banderas and Catherine Zeta Jones is definitely classic! Also Rian Johnson’s films being a new invented Agatha Christie mystery. Also, little note but ‘The Wizard of Oz’ came out in 1939 same year + studio as ‘Gone with the Wind’. Judy Garland won an honorary (jr) academy award when Viviane Leigh won hers (sounded like Makayla said 1933)

But in my opinion reboots are most of the time a no, I feel like there's a difference in taking an idea from something and modernize it or create something bigger rather than just taking the whole concept of something and remaking it. Remakes can and should certainly be good thing. The issue Hollywood is having of late is that there is less subtlety with modern remakes. Because a lot of the time, overexploitation of the nostalgic factor is usually the watchword and as such creatives are made complacent in terms of offering up something new or adding in a bit of subtlety to enhance the remake.

I've never liked remakes all that much. I prefer watching movies that are more original ideas. I'm fine with movies that take ideas from other movies and yet make it their own. I think of the scene in "City Of Angels" where Seth's lip is bleeding after he wakes up as a human after falling off the building as an angel. When I later saw "It's A Wonderful Life" and the scene where George Bailey's lip is bleeding once his cop friend finds him on the bridge and he laughs, that scene reminded me a bit of that movie, yet both movies were their own. I've never seen the "Wings Of Desire" movie, so can't compare that to "City Of Angels". I like some tv shows that are remade, though. I think of the new "Monsieur Spade" tv show and knew right away it sounded like Bogart's "Maltese Falcon" character, so in that sense because I'm a fan of the old classic movies, that made me want to watch the show and I've watched it on Sundays since the premiere on AMC.

Great video! I would say adaptations work much better than reboots. Adaptations tab into the same audience but like you said "it's an original derivative" it truly requires dissecting what works from the novel , comic, or whatever the original offered, and then perhaps adding new elements that will work better in the new format, whether a movie to tv series. There is so much ingeniutity that goes into that process. They have to extract the essence of the original and use what works then distill that to a new audience. It requires an artist's insights to adapt. Reboots require much less ingenuity. The changes seem to be arbitrary. And the motivation seems to be money rather than a true creative endeavor. Like Jeff Goldblum's character said in Jurassic Park “Your scientists (movie executives) were so preoccupied with whether they could, they didn’t stop to think if they should.” You have great adaptations like the early days of the MCU , unpopular characters like Guardians of the Galaxy are now household names! Then you have unnecessary reboots like the Fantastic Four (2015) which didn't add anything of substance to the franchise, and just seemed like a remake for sake of making one. "Iced Coffee"

I think the biggest issue with many sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes is that the studio and creators behind them, are taking so much from the original source material, yet not seeming to UNDERSTAND (let alone caring...) what it is they're adapting. You'll see how in many new shows and movies that are either sequels, prequels, reboots, and remakes that the changes or new additions being made actually end up stripping the original's thematic beats of their power, as well as why certain events happen the way they do and their causal relationship between one another. In any event, I'm still wait for the day someone decide to remake a bad movie, like some of the worst from the 1930s - 80s. As it could be a chance to show how filmmakers can learn from their mistakes of the failures released in Hollywood. But as of now, I'm still in the good old belief that Cogsworth (Beauty and the Beast) once said: "If it's not broke, don't fix it."

Honestly while I too am tired of reboots, ramake, squeals, and adaptations (it truly feels like that is all the get sent out way as an audience) there is nothing more frustrating that watching a quote "original" film and it starts to feel more derivative and formulaic than the adaptations! I tried watch in Project Power on netflix and thought this was another side story of the X-Men. It's not but if you'd have told me that I would have believed you! J.J Abrams over a decade ago made a movie called Super 8 about a bunch of kids in a small town trying to make their own movie when a train crashes it unleashes a mysterious monster that terrorizes the town. Not a bad premise, but I felt like J.J's homage to Steven Spielberg was even more derivative of what Spielberg already did better when he made E.T and Close Encounters. The Duffer Brothers would expand this to be it's own thing when they made Stranger Things drawing on 80's nostalgia and movies beyond just what Spielberg has done. The problem is the creatives do NOT have an original voice! I fear that as Hollywood funds more and more of these adaptations, the kinds of people who are making these movies are not the same people who work off an original voice in their work. So when it comes time to make their passion project those filmmakers just end up making a more derivative version of IP they love. Case in point Zack Snyder's Rebel Moon movies are just his attempt at making his own Star Wars. It's even based on a rejected pitch he gave to Lucas. I too would have said no to someone who took my old idea and tried to sell it back to me! So how do you think the audience feels if you try to sell them another superhero origin story again?! I rest my case.

This is exactly what I have been wondering about!! Like nothing in Hollywood seems good anymore and why reboot great movies that have already been done and ruin the charm of the original movie? I feel everything just seems lazy and not inspiring to the audience anymore. The only good movie that was able to be good and really inspiring to the audience was Top Gun: Maverick like I feel like no other movie is ever going to achieve the same goal as Top Gun: Maverick did after 37 years like that sequel was really amazing❤❤

Iced Coffee. Godzilla Minus One comes to mind as a positive representative of a remake. There are 37 Godzilla movies in total (including the 5 American ones) over the span of 70 years, yet this new one is considered the best one ever made (for now). Arguably, plot wise, there is nothing new. What changed was making completely well rounded new characters that elevate the thematic elements from the very FIRST movie from 1954. Japan has a very different relationship with the property, which is why they’re willing to take more experimental risks. Versus the American adaptations that eschew towards the fun b-movie blockbuster schlock. There’s nothing wrong with dumb fun, but the fact that a property that should’ve been done to death can still become something incredible shows unoriginality isn’t the issue. Lazy writing is.

Remake or reboots are not bad if it can stand on its own really. Cause I saw a movie and didn't know it was a remake but it was good. I stayed to the end as always cause informative and learn alot 😁

Iced coffee another thing is when there's original movies out a lot of people don't go see them they're going to see something that's familiar and people have to go see more independent movies most of those are original not all but a lot are.

Yeah, it’s notoriously hard to get original content produced in Hollywood.

Does anyone else think that Get Out is just a reboot of the Stepford Wives but about race instead of gender??? Great video ML ❤❤❤

@5:52 yes they adapted books etc but you didnt have multiple spin offs, reimagings, sequels etc. Also if they rebooted they waited a decade to do so.

To be honest….while I do agree that not every show and movie needs a reboot and a remake….I think two of the reasons for them are because even though they’re so iconic, a lot of younger Gen Zers as well as of course Gen X and Gen Alpha doesn’t know I these movies and shows. Millennials and baby boomers love to say that Gen Z, Gen X, and Gen Alpha are uncultured and don’t know the movies that were popular back in the 90’s-early 2000’s. Then there’s the fact that a lot of these movies have some lines in them that in today’s day and age would not be acceptable to say….so it’s more so giving the younger generations a chance to enjoy these movies, but to see actors and actresses in them who actually look “young” like legit teens because in a lot of these more older “teen” movies….the stars didn’t look like teens at all, more like young adults between 18-21. Now with the Twilight Saga, I definitely don’t think we need a remake because of how problematic and toxic that saga was (an 100 year technically dead vampire, dating a teenager…..then the best friend basically falls in love with their daughter when she was a baby, and supposedly starts dating her when she hits 18, so pedophilia) with Little Mermaid….I thought Halle did amazing, and Ariel was a fictional character so anyone could play her. As for Mean Girls, it’s based on the musical….but a lot of us turned into “mean people” when shaming Angourie and Avantika. Like it’s not their faults that some of the writing was bad….blame Tina Fey.

10:25 Totally feel like that when I’m writing sometimes!! I intentionally do it, especially if I’m looking for the same tone that some studios take. Definitely. Also sometimes when I do that, I get into a mental state of “I’m a fraud, I should never touch my keyboard or pens again bc I’m such a hack. I’m a hack and everyone knows it!” And then I go to sleep bc it’s probably 2 am when I start thinking that way. That or I take a day off to refocus and think.
