A short sign language video about the origins of the name of the holiday! Transcript below:
"Hi! Today ASL class was canceled because the instructor's car broke down and he couldn't come to Berkeley. So I was wondering what to do... I could have gone home, but I need to practice ASL! Last week was spring break, and we had no class. If I never practice, how can I improve? So I want to practice signing and teach you all about Easter. Easter was last Sunday. Christians celebrate it because a long time ago, about 2000 years ago, our god, Jesus, died, and three days later he came back to life as a zombie! Just kidding, he wasn't a zombie. Anyway, do you all know where the name 'Easter' comes from? Many people think that since they usually go to church on Easter morning and can watch the sunrise -- from the east -- that's where the name comes from. Nope... Actually, 'Easter' comes from the name of an ancient pagan goddess. Not Christian at all. Her name was 'Eostre'. Christians went to England and took her name to use it for Jesus' day. Now, everyone still calls it 'Easter', at least in English. In other languages, like French, Spanish, and Hebrew, the name is something like 'Pascal' or 'Pasqua', which is related to the name for 'Passover', the Jewish holiday. (NB: This is because they are always celebrated around the same time of the year; Jesus, who was Jewish, was actually eating a Passover dinner the night he was arrested and sent to be crucified.) Okay! So I've taught you about Easter. Did you all celebrate Easter? Did you hunt for eggs or eat chocolate, maybe?
