Jimmy Haslip is left handed and plays a right handed bass upside-down. He is a legend.

Its actually a left handed bass with the strings upside down, which is even more mind blowing.

He'd probably prefer to use a right-handed bass, but then he'd get neck-dive because of the body style difference.

So is Will Kennedy, who has his ride on the left (as opposed to normally on the left).

@@daceuro A right handed bass has the horn always in the way when you play it upside down (That's how I play). A left handed bass strung right handed is much easier to play from an ergonomic point of view. You can reach all the frets. The strap mount is in the right place etc...

As a lefty or southpaw, when we take a righty bass or guitar, we still play it tuned in 4ths EADG. Remember, the bass or guitar has been flipped upside down in order for us to be able to play it. As I mentioned before, we now have basses available to us lefty's that are strung EADG. We can also choose to string it GDAE if that was the way we learned to play bass.

So... Let's take a right handed 4 string bass tuned in 4ths EADG. Flip it over to the left, upside down GDAE and it is now tuned in 5ths like a violin or mandolin. Other stringed instruments tuned in 5ths are Violin, Viola, Cello, Tenor Banjo, Mandolin.... etc... That's interesting.
@JustTheBass1966

He most likely learned to play bass using a right-hand version, and played it by holding it in the reverse manner of a right-handed person. Upside down. Back in the days, lefty instruments were hard to come by, so most of us southpaws learned to play in the fashion that I described. As custom models became readily available, we were able to purchase instruments made specifically for us lefty's.
