Most people don’t understand how heat pumps operate! If it’s installed and maintained properly, they save a lot of energy! Even in northern climates! I live in NH and sold heat pumps for over 44 yrs. It’s normal fir the outdoor unit to show ice on the condenser. It should defrost itself about every 2 hrs. of run time. I heat my own home with a 5 ton Carrier Greenspeed system! Love it! And the current system is over 10 yrs old!

@@rps714 lol hope U got it fixed!? If the refrigerant level is normal & runs in both cooling & heating mode (after u have defrosted all the ice on the top/fan & coil outside!?)…. U prob need to check your outdoor/defrost thermostat/sensor! A heat pump has an outdoor defrost thermostat/sensor! If system ices up like you say! There’s a timer (on most) on the circuit board with usually 3 settings! 30-60-90!! Set the timer on 30!(if u find it has adjustable settings) If it’s still icing up…. Order a defrost thermostat & install! Or call a reputable company to test the defrost thermostat & the defrost board!!!! If it hasn’t lost Freon/refrigerant those are your 2 likely problems!!! If new defrost therm/sensor works u can prob put the timer back on 60-90 setting! The lower you set it (defrost cycle counter) the more defrost cycles the system will go through!(of course the board cost more than the defrost therm/sensor)! Most of the time after some time goes by the defrost therm goes bad….. if you’re gambling which part…. always go with the cheaper repair to solve your problem!👌👋🏼

That second reply stated a few issues. I won’t repeat. The most common is not setting your tstat high enough. If it’s below freezing outside, you need to set that tstat at 68 minimum! I keep mine at 72 or higher. I’m older now and like it warm. The outdoor unit uses the heat inside your home to defrost that coil outside.

I just installed 2 Infrared lamps for my Mini Split. Aiming them at the outside coils. No more freezing. 250w each lamp. Spread them evenly over the outside condenser. About 5" away. A small roof over the system might also help. Now good down to 20 deg F. I have not tested it lower.

No one seems to mention the relationship of a high dewpoint of outside air combined with a low dry bulb temp being a major cause. The hoar frost on trees and vegetation in winter is an example of this phenomenon.

@@stapleford My one does the same. Hayter system, room starts cold at 4 c ish, rain, ice, freezing fog, and about zero outside. turn onto heat test run, 30c works up to about 18c 19c and goes into defrost mode, temp drops to about 12c before it kicks in again. And so, round and round it goes, where it end no one knows. outside vains are white frost. Whats the take home here, if in very bad weather, most of these systems, will start to clock outside of about 18 to 20c ish + or -. indoors, but don't expect to hit a nice 25 or 28c most will struggle, or just won't play! So in some senses many won't do what it says on the tin so to speak, on a bad wet very cold day.

It got down to 24 last night and mine iced up on the outside and inside where the coils are. It got down to 55 in my house, I guess that defrost function didn't work for me, so we slept with extra blankets for sure. I also tried emergency heat and the air coming in wasn't warm at all, it dropped the temp two degrees in the house. That unit is only three years old. I guess I'm gonna have to call the installer that put it in to check the control board, good thing is I have a ten year warranty on the parts.

When the system ices up inside along with the outside there’s a chance you’re low on refrigerant! (Really can’t be sure without a thorough check ikr)…. But emergency heat should warm the place up!? (If indoor coil has no ice on it!…. May have to run longer to get ice off indoor coil too!?). Especially if you have enough emergency strip heaters in the indoor air handler!(and the thermostat is wired properly!?) What ton heat pump do you have!?!?!? I usually have a certain strip heat for certain tonnage! 1.5 ton air handler 5 kw! 2 tons 7.5 kw! ….2.5 ton 10kw! (3 ton 10-15kw) 3.5 ton 15kw! …4 to 5 ton 20kw strip heat! U may have 3 ton with 10 or less kw!? Check your air handler (outdoor tonnage also) size & strip heat level! I’ve found commercial systems with low to no strip heat! I found a residential house one day with NO STRIP HEAT! I ended up installing 10kw on that houses air handler! They didn’t call back after that either 👍🏽✌️(2.5-3 ton heat pump outside)!

Actually they do work ok. The biggest flaw is the installation crew sometimes don’t put a big enough emergency/strip heater(s) in the air handler!!! Ikr feels lukewarm majority of the time!!! Put a space heater in the bathroom cause shower time feel a draft!?!? Make sure there’s enough strip heat & u can install an outdoor thermostat on heat pump to energize strip heat operation. Preferably around 35-40 degrees to compensate with heat pump outdoor loss of heating inside!? When heat pump is properly installed & set up they actually work pretty gd during winter! Of course more they heat up the more probably gonna cost too! (It’s about savings & taking the chill off too ikr)…. Can’t win …. Sometimes u pay for more heat! A more spiffy heat pump with variable speed indoor (ECM motor) motor feels more like gas heat system…. But u pay for it…. As said b4!✌️👋🏼
