Many online Toyota dealerships are selling the entire head gasket kits now for around $150, shipping is free also. Free shipping over $75. Replace the water pump and thermostat , do a full tune up, do full intake body, replace the PCV, full EGR and cooler cleaning while you have everything off. I also replaced the tensioner for good measures. Used all OEM parts. Amazon has a good deal on Aisin water pump, the same one Toyota uses.

Most good repair shops will not replace the head gasket, unless they can disassemble the engine and clean the coolant from all the parts. That's why most shops just drop in a new short block or long block.

Thats not the case with these engines….. they are very repairable. And most good shops will actually do this repair on them.

Thank you Bryan for sharing this critical and vital information on 3rd generation Prius. My 2013 Prius just about to hit 210,000 miles and I have a good feeling the head gasket is blown. With this much many miles on the engine what gasket and components should I replace while I replace the head gasket? Thank you very much in advance.

I just get a good head gasket set from Mahle. Stay away from fel pro their kit does not come with everything needed. You will need to do a good inspection on the deck surface of the head and block once head is removed. Bolts are re useable. And so is the timing chain set provided that you do not see any damage to the chain or sprockets. I do have a how to video on my channel as well I highly recommend watching

You can do a combustion gas test liquid and vacuum vile test to determine for sure if combustion gas is getting into the coolant system 😀
@rivieraauto8540
4 күн бұрын
Be careful with that test because its not the most accurate test to confirm a head had gasket failure on these cars…. No1 because even if its positive….. all it tells you is that theres combustion gasses getting in the cooling system…… it does not tell you where its coming from. No2 this vehicle is equipped with a special heat exchanger in the exhaust behind the cat…. And there is also an egr cooler as well. Both sources if leaking could introduce combustion gasses to the cooling system and give u a positive reading on these cars
@Angela-wn8ee

@@rivieraauto8540 right on, the block test would just verify combustion gas in the coolant it definitely won't indicate where it's coming from it just helps to further the process of elimination. After I did the block test I used a bore scope in thru the spark plug holes after pressurizing the coolant system and I found my headgasket failure but like you said combustion gasses can get into the coolant many different ways. Before I was able to properly fix my issue I removed the o-ring on the coolant expansion tank it pretty much stopped the coolant from getting into the cylinder the misfire and morning rattle were practicly non existent it really helped in my case
@rivieraauto8540

@@Angela-wn8ee only downside to that is the cap is there to regulate pressure within your cooling system….. you’re supposed to have a certain amount of pressure because it increases the boiling point of water. By removing that o ring you are essentially reducing the caps ability to do its job.

Important question, what key parts do you recommend changing while doing this repair? So far my list is: gaskets & o-rings, timing chain, head bolts, water pump and the spark plugs. Anything else while going this far into the motor? BTW, this is a great video series, you do a great job of providing some good explanation where needed and then moving through the work to be done. Many thanks, I'm preparing to tackle this project very soon. Take care!

Thanks for the kind compliments... so as far as what parts to replace my recommendation is far more simpler than your list and much cheaper in fact man. I would replace your oil filter, and spark plugs in addition to the gasket set which if you use the Mahle set for this engine comes with all the gaskets needed. But the head bolts believe it or not on this engine are actually re usable which is why they are so expensive.
@rivieraauto8540

And I actually re use the timing chain and sprockets as well👍 have had no issues doing so but I do recommend inspecting your pistons to ensure they all reach tdc because if one does not make it to the top its usually an indication of a bent connecting rod. You absolutely want to inspect that otherwise you will end up with a cylinder misfire due to low compression

Is there a way to fix my heater core that got clocked by bars radiator sealant ?
@rivieraauto8540

Yeah unfortunately you’ll have to replace the heater core…..the passages are smaller than the point of a ball point pen….. therefore….. typically…. Flushing is unsuccessful as a result.

@@imthedrivingcrooner it is very possible in this circumstance that you may be experiencing a head gasket failure then...... this is the kind that I probably would be concerned of possible heaf warpage and you are absutely going to want to check it for such issues and replace the valve stem seals if it is leaking. What is your engine oil level? Is it abnormally overfull for some reason?
@imthedrivingcrooner

@@rivieraauto8540 i bought it used a few months ago and once i realized it was overheating and spilling coolant i did an oil change and egr cleaning and water pump and thermostat change but it didnt fix it so i stopped driving it. oil was at a normal level but last symptom to show up was a rattle at start which showed misfire codes and i assumed that it was the head gasket at that point.
@rivieraauto8540

@@imthedrivingcrooner yeah thats usually the sign right there..... I have a video in this series that shows how to tell. You need a borescope camera small enough to fit in the spark plug hole of a prius, and a coolant pressure tester with proper prius adapter..... you then pump up the cooling system and inspect the cylinder for coolant leaking inside.... usually the missfire happens on cylinders 1 or 2
