The reality is that they view NATO as an extension of the United States. They think the US is to NATO what Russia was to the USSR. They can only think in these terms because it is what they know. They see a very powerful country and think that their 'partners' are puppets because that is the basis of every relationship Russia has with weak nations around it. Of course, the US has interests in NATO. Mainly in helping keep free and democratic nations free because it's good for their geopolitics and the global economy of which they play a massive part in. But these Russians see it as if Finland or Sweden became colonies of the US which is of course absurd. But that is what they know because it is what Russia is doing right now to numerous nations (or parts of them).

NATO is the USA and all the other members are merely vassals who must do what their American master tells them. The strongest members are those who colonized the third world countries and took the resources of Africa and so many other countries for their own use while giving those people a mere pittance, while putting in power and enriching leaders who would sell out their countries. They don't seem to have any understanding of what NATO is or what it stands for. NATO is simply a group of seperate, independent but like-minded nations that agreed post WW2 that they would join forces to protect each other in defence if any member was attacked in the future, as Poland was by Nazi Germany at the start of WW2. The aim being that they would therefore be better able to better protect themselves from aggressors, especially in the case of smaller countries with less capability to withstand external aggression from countries who wish to invade, destroy or take them over.... which is why Ukraine requested to join. Due to Russia being involved in the original agreement Ukraine's request was denied and yet Russia still choice to ignore what it had agreed with NATO in the past and invaded Ukraine.

Russia, all the way back thru the Tsars, has always operated on a "might makes right" basis, Russians feel if they have the power to take something then god expects them to take it and to not take it would be sacrilege. This is true on a personal level as well as a governmental one. And since it is all they have known, all their parents and grandparents have ever known, they believe down to their core that its the only way the world works. So if a country is in NATO, they it must have been forced there BY NATO. And if America leads NATO then they are the ones pulling the strings. And any Russians who did NOT feel this way, they have either been run out of the country or arrested or fell out of a window. So all thats left is true believers and the apathetic ones who dont think they can make a difference (possibly correct). NATO refused to sign security guarantees with Russia at the beginning of 2022. NATO ignored any attempts by Russia to negotiate. NATO rejected an application for membership from Russia. What else should Russians think if NATO rejected all our attempts to establish peace and cooperation? But in any place where Russia had an interest, NATO showed hostile actions. Color revolutions for the change of governments friendly to Russia in the CIS countries. NATO does not make a secret that this is the work of the CIA and Mi6. I sincerely hope the people who appear in these videos are able to read all the comments and realise that we understand they live under a totalitarian government that suppresses free speech by making words a crime. We don't hate Russia or all Russians. We want them to get out of Ukraine. And we hope they find a way to true freedom. If Putin had suppressed his desire to be remembered as the Tsar who resurrected the Russian Empire, Russia would’ve seen NATO fade away into irrelevance. The massive invasion of Ukraine came as a huge psychological shock to the West. The invasion was followed by trying to blackmail the West with energy, threatening the use of nuclear weapons, threats on TV to go on to Poland, the Baltics, even Berlin! Nato is the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation, a defensive pact or even a contract that guarantees cohesion support in the case of an attack of one of it´s joined countries. It only expands if some country has the wish to get additional support in case of an attack and joins it on free will. And Nato currently does only one thing - watching and monitoring the stuff thats going on. Not a single tank or weapon got delivered by Nato, that came all from the single countries themself. There is an argument that because of geographical features (eg the Carparthain mountains extending from Romania to the Czech Republic) the more Russia's border is/could be placed to the west, the markedly _shorter_ is the border they would have to defend, realistically. Since nobody in their right minds would try an attack over the Carpathian mountains, even if they wanted to. The most 'successful' thrust of the Nazi's Operation Barbarossa was through the relatively flat plain of Ukraine, I believe. Ukraine is a bit like Belgium, in the unfortunate position of being prone to being a 'convenient' route historically (WWI and WWII). Compare and contrast Switzerland - not offering a good way to get from A to B - and AFAIK never invaded.

Japan changed their views after they had 2 nuclear bombs dropped on them. Russia would at the least have to descend into a civil war to undergo any such transformation, I don't see that very likely. Yeah, I think that's a well summarised mentality of most NATO countries' citizens, and I believe the stance of our elected officials as well. Putin wants Russia to be a respected player on the world stage. I believe that it actually succeeded at that, I was genuinely under the impression that Russia was on the right path, partaking increasingly more in international trade and fostering positive foreign relations (glossing over their annexation of Crimea). With all the resources they have to offer, they could have just continued with that strategy and become increasingly more influential. Now, Putin is just cannibalising the whole country and its population for a war it is unlikely to win, after which it'll be either a pariah country or be forced to pay reparations. It will be left by those who can afford to do so, leaving only an old and bitter, brainwashed population without outlook. Nothing good will come of this.
