It’s really important to not buy Nintendo switch games brand-new. Because if you bought one of these sports titles for 20 or 30 bucks on the used market, it makes the lack of DLC content much more palpable. $60 for a game and a DLC pass is not too bad of a deal. But it’s the $120 combination of the two that makes me want to just mod my switch

There are people who don’t even have online accessibility, and just because the modern era is more fond of online multiplayer does not mean that’s what a game should strive for the most. Yes it’s good to have a neat online server and all but you have to take into consideration that you are paying £50/60$ for this game, and online gaming is definitely not worth that amount. Most of what you are paying for is the offline enjoyment. The tournaments, the special modes, the story mode, the collectibles, the customisation options etc. just look at smash for example, vast amount of offline content like story mode, the vault, games&more section, 80+ characters, different special battles, spirits, as well as having all the different online options like arenas, spectate, tourneys. Quickplay, shared content. They even have a news section on the top of the main menu so update you on the latest smash news. All of that and they still offer a solid lineup of dlc fighters as well as frequent updates to the game like new spirits and special tourney rules online. You're right. The Mario sports games have been half assed. The final character rosters are what I would expect the games to have at launch. They have no intention of delivering more content, so they hold back the base content in order to keep players on a drip feed. At first glance it looks like Nintendo is supporting their games but they're really not. This isn't a live service model. That would entail Nintendo updating their sports games for years to come. Nintendo will support their games for a year or so and then drop em like a bad habit. Thing is, Nintendo has no reason to stop this behavior because people will mindlessly buy their games anyway.

Or take Xbox fans they love paying very little, well that's exactly what they get very little. That's their business model to first party games like Halo now you can play it free on our service that you pay monthly. But if you want more you will have to buy all the season's and weapon's lol. Games aren't complete unless they're story driven people complain about the prices of that as well. Even worse i think they also cut characters to keep games unique so you have to buy multiple games, for example you want to play as Diddy Kong in Mario Party and you only have MP Superstars well you're going to have to buy Super Mario Party because he is not coming to Superstars.

It's not the CHARACTER ANIMATIONS (they're legit amazing for what they are) It's partially about the small character roster (RIP Daisy, Diddy, Petey, and Bowser Jr.). It's partially about the base game content. HOWEVER... It seems like Nintendo is hedging the entirety of the game on the competitive online aspect. The CLUBS, the SEASONS, the GEAR, the SMALL roster at launch. No Sidekicks or unique Arenas. Most of the crazy stuff is completely GONE. Because Nintendo clearly wants this entry to be more online competitive than the previous entries were on paper. But... What if you're not INTO that kinda stuff? What is there for you? Back in the day we had SF2 with eight playable characters and it cost $60. Then we got SF2 Turbo which added four more playable characters and cost $60. Then we got Super SF2 which added four more characters that you could play as that were completely new and once again, cost $60. Each one of those games, I would say was complete and also worth owning if you were a big enough fan. Nowadays, if the base Mario Strikers: Battle League is polished on day one, with good graphics, tight gameplay, solid controls, a variety of music, a good amount of playable characters, stages, music, modes, etc., all for $60 when price adjusted is respectively cheaper than titles in the early 90s, and then said title receives free updates along the way to it, that’s not a bad strategy. If the game is broken at launch and you have to pay for it to be better later, that’s a shame. If it’s solid at launch and you have to pay for more content later, that’s understandable as more work is being done. If it’s solid at launch and you get free content that improves the title along the way, then that’s just a win that helps keep the conversation flowing of the title and brings more people into it. An interesting point that I've seen brought up recently is that Nintendo made the choice to hide characters behind FLC/DLC in order to maintain some semblance of secret characters in their games. The whole idea being that, because of leaks of full character rosters coming out weeks if not months beforehand, they still want players/consumers to not know everything that the game has to offer just by making a cursory search online. The main issue with this being that the game comes across as being unfinished and there's no sense that you've earned the would-be secret characters as you would normally through single-player progression or achievements (i.e. the Super Team from Super Mario Strikers or Boswer Jr., Diddy Kong and Petey Pirhana from Charged).

This ‘release now, finish later’ live servicing game business model with drip feeding DLC is such a cash grab for gaming developers and publishers to recoup the cost of game development before completing the content for that game. Yes video game development is expensive but it entices you to make the best quality game titles so your audience/customers can continue to fund your franchise. A fully finished and complete game must be a necessity while DLC should be an accessory. A fully finished game is a must have while DLC should be treated as a nice to have but not necessary thing.

I honestly don’t mind the updates due to the nature of them being free. There are plenty of games I’ve played were the experience felt incomplete and then DLC came out that rounded everything out but came at a premium. I don’t think it’s too bad with the Mario sports games as there is still enough there to get a fulfilling experience, imo. It’s not like half the game is missing. If that makes sense.

my opinion is if the game is complete and fun from day 1 then it doesn't matter that their is free updates coming sure it's nice to get a bigger roster but it's not the end of the world and my money is on that the game is pretty much all done but some characters originally planned to be in the original roster won't be done for the games launch so they are launching the game with out them and finishing up the last couple of characters and IMO this is better than 1 delaying the entire game so that a couple of characters can be finished 2 just not putting them in the game at all or 3 selling them as paid DLC

The wack thing is that right now if I want, I can hook up my Wii, load in Strikers Charged disc, and it has all the content available to it. In 10-20 years, hooking up a switch and loading in Strikers Battle League card even after all the updates, if the Switch network shuts down and if I don’t have the update data downloaded, it will be impossible to play any of the content added after the initial release. If there was a way the updates could be stored into the games cartridges like an SD card, I legit would have no issues.

I totally agree with this. The effect games like this gives me is that I play it for a couple of days, and get bored with it. By the time the free content drops, I don't have much motivation to play it because of how lackluster the game was initially. It needs to have everything from the start. This is why in-game unlockables is a much better strategy, and helps with longevity in the long run. Having a complete game with in-game unlocks instead of drip-feeding content monthly gives most players more incentive to play it for a very long time! I can't tell you how long it took me to unlock all of the characters in Strikers Charged because of how brutal the Strikers Cup was. But the point is, I sunk so many hours into the game for years to unlock all of the characters. It makes me miss the pre-DLC days. Now all of these companies are abusing the system. Thankfully, I've been GameFlying these barebones Mario sports games. It's a shame because these games have solid mechanics and gameplay. But this "complete it later" practice drives me away... I'll at least rent it via GameFly when everything drops.

This is gamin in general as a whole these days. Gaming is converting to a gaming as a service format. These companies want to release a game a full retail then charge you continuously with in this case the expansion pack while slowly applying updates to the games to keep them relevant. The best example of this is Mario Kart 8 track pass being included in the expansion pack as well as animal crossing happy home, and splatoon 2. im sure mario tennis, golf, and strikers will get expansion pack updates as well as nintendo switch sports. What I would love to see is more of the older expansions being released on the service so that I can go back and enjoy the games I currently own even more. All in all this is kinda a wait and see type of situation. Lets see what they include with the expansion pack in the coming future. The big one, and you can hold this one to me is going to be when the smash fighter passes are added to the switch expansion pack.

I hear what you saying rgt. But you gotta remember this is a different era than the ps2 era we came up in. With so much stuff going on attention spans are LOW and Nintendo identified this problem. We don't live in an age where you're sitting up bored and just decide" let me blow the dust off this old game and play it again" people are always looking for something new. And stimulating. And are willing to spend money for a brand new experience. So if an old game can suddenly have a new character or new mode with community hype around it again than it's a new experience all over again.

I agree that engagement refreshment is the reason behind the updates in these games. There is a bias among the KZitem creators that doesn't exist among normies and casuals. They can be brought back to the game with the updates because they are not always 100% up to date on the gaming news. Before I started watching various creators' videos daily and podcasts weekly I was a person who might have turned in a console and popped in a game and been surprised happily by a new course or character appearing for me to experience. It is kind of like an unexpected gift. There are far more casuals than heavily informed gamers playing video games. Of course I would prefer the entire game with all content and no updates required for preservation needs. Today I can play my NES, SNES, N64, GameCube and Wii games without ever connecting to a server. Until the media fails I have everything I need to play without server checks or internet at all. But I do see why they do this and the loud and bothered minority has little chance to change prevailing marketing theory that many publishers and developers are buying in to.

This is the main reason why I’m slowing down buying physical games, looks like games are incomplete from day 1 by having bugs or just not enough content, having to download Gigs of updates defeats the purpose of buying physical, meaning you’ll always need that internet connection. I used to buy physical games to keep playing them for years and years to come, at this rate these games will be useless or incomplete as soon as the servers are shut down.

Games are cheaper now then they ever have been. Anyone who disagrees, look up MSRP for retro games when they were released and then make use of an inflation calculator. Your mind will be blown. If prices adjusted with inflation we would be paying at least $140 to $190 per game. Games releasing incomplete is annoying, but we are paying way less than we ever did, even if you include the price of DLC. For example, some SNES games were around $80. That's about $165 today. NES games were on average $50-60. Thats $122-146 today. Just for some perspective.
