I once was told a story: there was a really rich (by the scale of epoch) jewish grandpa somewhere in Moscow in 1990-00s, he was driving an old Moskvich, wore shabby clothes, but walls of his apartment were covered in 3 layers of different paintings and golden orthodox icons. When a young guy asked him: you are 65, you are rich, why dont you buy a Mercedes, finally that the ussr is no more, and you can afford it? He answered: you know what? our country is like a barrell filled with shit and an axe reconing just over the edge of the barrell, you either lose your head to your disgust or pride, or suffocate in it, and its our duty in that goddam barrell to just let the lips out, just enough to sip air.

The soviet union was capable of conducting world-leading engineering research with the right motivation - their military tech was as capable as anything the US had, they won every milestone in the space race, and always had the lead in nuclear power technology. But they never adapted their new advances into benefits for civilians. It was all limited to military applications or major government projects, with no interest in commercialising it or generating products that would be useful to ordinary citizens.
@drnolegs797

@@vylbird8014 Man it's really cool that literally every single statement you made was false. They were consistently behind in both military and civilian technology, throughout the coldwar, although this didn't make them by any means not a threat or able to apply what they could make or even had the US didn't, they were certainly capable but without the sheer technological and economic might of the USA there are lots they couldn't keep up with. They absolutely did not win every milestone in the space race, this statement is as stupid as it obvious, they had a hell of a lot of accomplishments for sure, but so did the Americans (and Nato), it was a genuine technological race for spacecraft and rocketry, and obscenely expensive for both sides. And the point on Nuclear power technology surprisingly isn't won by the US or the USSR, but by France of all nations during the cold war, this is an interesting thing to look into if you ever read any source outside of tankie's Reddit. Hell, you might not even know that the Nation that dropped the most nukes in the pacific was not the USA.

I'm pretty sure Hitler killed about 30 million people, and Stalin around 3-9 million people, depending on how you categorize it. There is a key factor this video ignores, the Cold war killed any chances of the Soviet's recovering from WW2. The USSR spent between 10-20% of it's GDP on military spending, in peace time 5% is the recommended maximimum. Most of the rest going towards heavy industry, and while this is good for certain parts of the economy, such as steel and chemical production, aeronautics, and nuclear power. It crippled the living standards of the average citizen, with agriculture and light industries being neglected. By '50, steel production was double what it was in '40, light industry and agriculture, however, were only the same as it was in the '30s.

As a Russian, absolute banger video. Pretty much everything you said is a fact, which is very unusual for a video made by someone without access to Russian sources. I would also mention the reason why historically Russian rulers tend to please nobility. In the 18th century we saw 6 successful nobility plots against the ruling monarch. So as soon as a new emperor tried to help the serfs, he was overthrown by the nobility. This caused the coming 150 years of monarchs to please the nobility instead of normal people. We see this situation repeat today. Eltsin, Putin and any coming president has to balance between the oligarchs and people. If he tries to fight them, he very well might get rid of. I’d also add the fact that the previous century saw nearly no year where the people could prosper. 1914-1924 is war, civil war and famine, 1924-1941 is Stalins dictatorship, famine, gulags. Then comes the Second World War. Only after Stalin’s death do we see maybe a decade where most progress was made. Then comes a total economic collapse. Only the 2000s and the start of Putin’s presidency brings some stability (this is why so many older people like Putin so much - he brought real stability) and then we have Ukraine and Covid. And if we count the unnecessary losses from all of this, we would probably get >50 million. Seems like whenever Russia gets on the track of prosperity some new shit happens that sends it right back.

Voices in the heads of the reformers (and later - socialist revolutionaries like Narodninks) told them Commune will manage this land efficiently without inequality and other social stresses. In reality you cannot expect a collective to be eager to take risks, which is a prerequisite to any development. The amount of land they received was actually the biggest in the continental Europe, especially in fertile Black Earth regions, but it just could not be used efficiently by commune. Also, direct taxes never exceeded more that 5-10% of the state budget income, so that segment is also bogus.

@@p00bixI'd argue against that bit about the plantation system. The US was the same, especially the south, and as mentioned in the video so was Japan. Taiwan wasn't much better off prior to the effective end of the Chinese Civil War. I'd argue that their oligarchy and over reliance to agriculture were both bigger issues since even today they rely heavily on a few cash crops for their exports and unlike 100 years ago its hard for people to enter the market of modern agriculture since you need expensive equipment like GPS guided combines and specially designed smart sprayers to be competitive, making it harder for small farms to compete and mainly benefits the giant mega-farms.

Those who managed to snatch the Soviet wealth (factories, resources) were not interested in value added production, they simply sold raw materials and parked the money in Cyprus, UK, Israel, US. But it slowly improving, people younder than 30 do start new businesses, old oligarchy was pushed out of Russia because of the war and sanctions, only state owned oligarchy remained. Hello - I do enjoy your videos and find them pretty informative. I am a professor of Russian at a U.S. university. Let me please make one small correction. Naturally, the level of fluency and competence in the Russian language among both the Jewish, as well as the German speaking communities would depend on a number of factors, the most important of which would be which time period we are talking about, how long the individual and or family had been in Russia, and to what extent they lived isolated or not from the wider Russian speaking society. I would say the earlier, both in terms of year, as well as length of time the individual and or family had been in Russia, the more likely it was that those in these groups would have had somewhat limited fluency in Russian. As time went by, however, these groups became less isolated and more exposed to Russian society, especially under the Soviets, with forced collectivizations, and the mass-deportations to Kazakhstan and Siberia of the German speaking Russians (most of whom came to Russia in the 17th century, at Catherine the Great's (herself a German) express invitation. Over time, these peoples were further and further integrated, and today you would hard pressed to find a singe Russian Jew or German-speaking Russian who did not speak absolutely flawless Russian. Just to finish, both of these communities still boast numbers in the millions, although sizeable percentages, if not the majority, no longer live in Russia, but have long since emigrated abroad, most notably to Israel, Germany and to the United States.

I feel like there are some mistakes. 1) The Mongols did not unite Russians, they dealt the finishing blow to the Kievan Rus, which then broke apart. The Mongols did not care for the government, they just came to get their money and left again. 2) Serfs were not send to Siberia to colonize it. Generally Serfs were widespread in regions, where you can actually grow food and from the Caspian to the Pacific was/is no fertile farm land in Russia. Some Serfs were sent to Siberia as punishment. 3) The map from 1991 was a very poor choice to explain processes that already started after the Napoleonic Wars. During that time Russia had cities like Mariupol, and the river Neman. Around 1810 the Russian elite was convinced that an alliance with England was the natural course for Russia. Their main plan was to pay the English to ship their products into the world. The British however feared the Russians plan to invade India, so they saw Russia as a threat, even though Russia only started to develop plans for India in the 1840s, after and because England adopted a hostile stance towards Russia. A major reason why Russia could not sell products to the world. 4) The work on moving away from Serfdom was not a reaction to the lost Crimean War. Alexander I. already started to work (in secret) on reforms even before Napoleon's invasion. His problem was that to abolish Serfdom, he could not just order it with his absolutists rights, because then the nobles would kill him just like his predecessor, so a parliament was needed, but if he introduces a parliament, only serf-owners would populate it. And he could not get rid of serf-owners, because they fulfilled multiple tasks like commanding the military, collecting taxes, enforce the law etc and often one noble had multiple roles. Therefore his first goal was to slowly moving the nobility away from serfdom, which they did not want, because it would mean less money for them. In the end the secret got leaked and made the transition more difficult. Maybe Baykov's paper is not a good source, since he even writes that he only introduces a hypothesis and does not have sufficient evidence. The other sources look okay though.

Why? Because of bad upper management, Putin might like to think he's smart, but let's be honest, a country with such natural wealth and smarts, Russia should be doing far better than they are, the fact that they are barely keeping up with eastern EU countries which are still developing and most of which have little to no natural resources, is quite embarrassing for Putin. A competent government with such natural resources, ends up delivering what Norway has, but that's quite rare in this world, and if it wasn't for the natural resources, Russia would be a lot poorer then they are and considering that Putin has been in charge for so long and has an iron grip over the country, the blame is on him why Russia is performing poor and the simple truth why they are performing poor is simply, Russia is living under a dictatorship that makes it much more difficult for the Russia people to express themselves, innovate and become creative because of the governments iron grip in dictating what can and can't be done, and in any economy, the people are the real assets, as long as you allow them to be free and creative, hence why western countries are so much more successful. You know what the irony is, Russia could be a very rich country if they went on the proper path to democracy and stop being so antagonistic with the EU and the US and build friendly relations, but that isn't going to happen because of a leader that's living in the past, and ultimately, the real blame is on the Russian people for allowing the country to get where it is now.

Real reasons: 1. Geography and climate: too complex and lengthy logistics, too many difficult climatic conditions and a bunch of other geoclimatic factors that affect not only simple life (commonly fewer harvests, more valuables are spent on “heating” in winter, etc.), but also historically “pushed back” Russia in the speed of development compared to the warmer and climatically milder Western and Central Europe. Conventionally, while Russia was occupied by a huge glacier and people lived in small tribes and ate roots to survive, conditional Italians collected 3 grape harvests per year and traded with half the world through the warm Mediterranean Sea). 2. Historical circumstances: Russia was “lucky” to collect and participate in almost all the greatest wars, troubles and tragedies of Europe over the last thousand years, and always with significant losses, which hit the demographics and economy very hard. (a striking example is WW2, if not for this, the population of Russia would now be more than 200-250 million, which means there would be more wealth but unfortunately reality is cruel). 3. Geopolitical situation: Russia was “lucky” to become the cradle and leader of communism, which actually put it against the entire capitalist world (and at that time against the entire developed world), which greatly affected development. This is the “cold war”, and sanctions, and constant attempts by Western countries to incite someone against Russia (again, at some point, the Nazis had very real financial assistance from the entire capitalists of the world,guiding it to the "target"),constant isolation from world trade, tech and other factors. 4. The collapse of the USSR: despite the above crap, Russia, due to its valuable resources, large population, inner spirit and luck, was able to maintain a leading position in the world, but the collapse of the USSR was a terrible blow to the people. Tens, or even hundreds of millions of people died, emigrated, and simply ceased active life. Massive ruin, unprecedented crime, a terrifying economic situation, wars, etc. were the result of the collapse (once the 2nd largest economy in the world even at the last years befor colapse), today’s Russia, which somehow managed to come to its senses after such a knockout, is only a pitiful “shadow” of the USSR, and even so, it cannot be call it a poor country. The population of Russia cannot be called wealthy, but they live quite comparable to the inhabitants of “rich” Europe and the United States, although somewhat less well-off and more difficult. 5. Autocracy and corruption: modern Russia, due to a bunch of factors (mainly due to the collapse of the USSR), has turned into an oligarchic corruption cesspool, which makes rich oligarchs super-rich, and impoverishes the population. Those. even if at some points Russia manages to develop in such difficult conditions, its growth and development are restrained by the shackles of greedy rich freaks who are ready to sell the country for a couple of extra billions in their pockets. All of the above factors are interconnected and woven into each other, which gives us modern Russia: rich in resources and talents, a huge country with not the smallest population, but with a terrible government and state, system and an endless war with the “geopolitical” West - aka “the USA and vassals” who REALLY don’t want Russia to become really developed and rich. Fortunately, times are changing, and no matter how terrible it may sound, the war in Ukraine had a very positive impact on Russian society, playing the role of a shock slap in the face for the rich and the common people, beginning to wake up after the horrors of the collapse of the USSR.

What positive impact are you talking about? Started so good, ended much more derailed.
@zanzan2738
2 ай бұрын
@@-amogus- What's good? Easy: 1. The Russian government has begun to at least somehow fight corruption, because of which it failed in the beginning. 2. Due to sanctions, Russian business and industry, which previously always relied on purchased Western products, are now simply forced to produce their own products, which means industrial and economic growth, as well as market diversification. 3. The war awakened the Russians morally, and released “steam” from a population severely suppressed by the repressive apparatus. 4. By starting this war, Russia finally finished off the monopolar pro-American world, which further untied Russia’s hands and made it possible to act without regard to the “wishes of the United States.” Now the world is multipolar, and this is beneficial for Russia and very painful for the United States. 5.This war also gave a huge boost to the strengthening of the actual state of the Russian army... If earlier it was more of a fearsome but“ceremonial army” with a huge pile of equipment rotting in reserve and in warehouses, now it is without a doubt the most dangerous and experienced army (on par with the Ukrainian one) in the world, which has enormous strategic, tactical and technical advantages over any potential enemy. 6.Yes, Russia has lost a certain amount of equipment and soldiers, but the loss of equipment will only spur the development of its military industry, and the loss of soldiers is more than compensated by the number of Ukrainians who, for various reasons, have moved or will move to Russia for permanent residence.

@@stream2watch You're talking nonsense. Firstly, you compare the completely isolated USSR, operating outside the markets according to the laws of the “command administrative system” of the late period, loaded with internal problems and political confusion, which was very limited due to its very structure and ideology, with modern Russia, completely capitalist with access to the largest world markets and not limited by either internal structure, ideology, or “plans.” Secondly, goods from the USSR were not garbage, garbage were those who themselves never developed or produced anything. Naturally, due to the above circumstances, in some areas the USSR lagged behind technologically, but the lag was not catastrophic (about 5-10 years depending on the product), and its products fully met the needs of people and demonstrated high quality, were cheap and repairable , albeit without many “convenient” and “technological” nuances and “tricks” pleasant for the average user. At the same time, these products did not depend in any way on “Western” companies and were independent and self-sufficient, which means they were resistant to any political and economic intrigues made by the West. Answer me, clown, which of the current countries will be able to “survive” and maintain industry and power structure if the empire of “goodness and democracy” with its vassals decides to destroy them or subjugate them? The USSR was able, and not just able, but was among the leaders in almost all indicators, and this in such hellish conditions. So don’t be ridiculous, the whole West is lap dogs and slaves of an overseas master, at the stroke of whose fingers, both during the Soviet era and now, you will lose all the benefits and “non-garbage” products. Russia has taken the same path, only now everything is much simpler and fairer, given that the world is already multipolar and it will no longer be possible for the USA and its Chihuahuas to isolate Russia, as they did with the USSR.

The problem of Russian Oligarchs and their Monopolies seems eerily familiar to the current problem of Monopolies in the United States. The tragedy of all this is that Russia has made so many important contributions to Western Civilization, the arts, the sciences and the culture, but has doomed itself to perpetual poverty by never fully embracing democracy or free market capitalism. Swapping one oppressive type of government for another isn't a solution. It just seals their fate. And their aggressive expansionism and constant invasions of neighboring nations assures that they will always be poor, and will always blame the "west" despite previously being a very important part of Western Civilization.

Excellent video! You covered a variety of reasons (e.g., geography inhibiting trade, slowness to specialize by shifting from agriculture to cities, misaligned incentives, lack of competition, poor protection of property rights since the govt can seize a business, etc.). I think you've done a great job of capturing the diverse reasons - World leaders everywhere could learn a lot about how to improve their economies by watching this video!

Traditionally, in much of medieval Europe, towns had their own legal status. If a serf ran away to a town and could avoid capture for ‘a year and a day’ they were free. As towns needed apprentices and workers this was encouraged, so young people with ‘get up and go’ got up and went.
