Some three decades ago a friend told me of a story, which happened at Hamburg Airport EDDH. A worker had forgotten to switch off the orange lights of his construction van when he -- looking in his rear mirror -- suddenly realised, he had made a "catch" and a jet was following him. Luckily he stopped, as moments later the buildings around would have come too close to the wings... The jet was pushed back and the worker never was allowed again to drive construction vehicles at the airport.

In the early 1990's my son and I plus a group of Air Cadets toured Toronto's Pearson International Airport. The airport duty manager was giving us the tour and at one point I was following him in our car as he was driving his "Follow Me" vehicle. During this tour, and to my surprise, an Air France 747 was closely following us. My son and another Air Cadet were going nuts hanging out the windows watching this aircraft towering over us. He was only about 20 meters behind us. I found out a few minutes later that the crew were lost and the duty manager was guiding them to the gate. It's an experience we will never forget.

Hey Captain, im interested to know more about ETOPS is it true that ETOPS also mean "shortcut" to the destinations?😂 i hope you can explain about it in the next video. Thanks if you are reading this 👨🏻✈️👍🏻
@chesterwang3070
3 жыл бұрын
Sorta. ETOPS is like the maximum time an aircraft is rated to fly on one engine. For example an ETOPS rating of 180 means that the plane must be within range of an airport that is 3 hours away on one engine at any given time in flight. Therefore yes a higher ETOPS rating does mean you take a more direct route as you don’t have to keep turning to stay close to an airport.

Of course, everything was low tech in comparison to today. We touched down in Chicago and started to taxi...and taxi...and taxi. After about a half hour, the pilot did a 360º turn in place then got on the intercom and said, "Well folks, we're lost!" Like you said, no follow-me cars. The only place I ever saw them in the US was on Air Force bases when I was getting a hop (free ride on a military aircraft for military personnel). In Frankfurt, follow-me cars can also write speeding tickets and take away the airport driving license from people working there, if they see somebody disobeying the rules. They're also one of the only ones who can exceed the global speed limit of 30 km/h (if there's a good reason, and it's safe to, e.g. when escorting external emergency services, like an ambulance) Generally, over in Frankfurt, they're essentially the mobile eyes, ears, and hands of the airport authority.

I don't know about EDDS, but here at LKPR, the follow me service is provided by ANS (Czech ATC provider) whereas TWYs/RWYs inspections and service to construction vehicles (amongst others) are provided by airport operations and bird (and hare and boar and …) protection is provided by biological protection service - so two different providers (airport administration vs. ANS) and three diferent services. Guys from biological protection even claim, that birds distinguish their yellow Landcruiser from almost the same yellow Landcruiser of airport operations (which does not have any shotgun, bird of prey or hunting dogs). One important thing: every vehicle moving on the manoeuvring area (TWYs and RWYs) must have S-mode transponder, or be acompanied by one having it - this is usually service provided by airport operations.

I live in Chicago and I can see why they don't do Follow-Me cars. On average the airport handles ~100 flights per hour. If it takes a Follow-Me car 15 minutes to lead a plane in and 5 minutes to get to the next plane then one car can handle 3 planes per hour. So you need 33 cars to do the job and triple that for a 24-hour shift. Near 100 cars and people. Granted slow times like the late night are different than the busiest times but to allow for sick-days and vacations and whatnot you are still probably looking at 50 cars/people to do the job (guessing of course...big ballpark on this one). Pay them $35,000/year and that is $1.75 million/year. Add in benefits and it is even more. Then add in the cars. Let's say $15,000/each (generous) and there goes another $750,000. Add in maintenance and gas and mechanics to service the fleet. This is the US. Screw safety if it costs them money. Find your own way to the gate. Someone needs a new yacht.

This is really an interesting topic. By the way the Follow Me car service is not free of charge : the airlines which request it through a pilot or operation staff must pay for this service included in the handling fee invoice ( I don't remember its cost anymore, anyway it varies according to each airport and each handling company ). As for a Follow Me car, even in the same Italy, Fiat Panda or Uno had been used at Rome Airport until 2010 if I am not wrong. Of course the airlines would pay more willingly if the Lamborghini were used for this service even though in this case there might be some risk of higher cost to be charged than that of the service by a standard car, lol

Of course it's not free, someone has to pay for it. What I think would be ideal for that application would be Nissan Leaf, since it gets really good efficiency at low speeds and doesn't need the airport to maintain a supply of gasoline.

From technical view point, Nissan Leaf would be an ideal choice, however, it depends on each handling company and in many cases on which car makers they have a better relationship with. Sometimes car prices or their performance don't count at all, for example, it happens that if a handling company's boss is a good friend of a regional manager or a sales manager of a certain car maker, very probably he chooses his friend's company's car. I saw many similar cases in many different fields, hahaha. By the way, many people don't know that there is almost nothing free of charge at the airport for the airlines, even each announcement costs except local ones by a local microphone.

There's something special to seeing such a small car lead the way for those enormous planes. Put a huge collar on the plane and couple a leash to it, that would make it even more fun!
