Given the memories these countries have regarding their membership in the Russian sphere of influence, I doubt that there is much enthusiasm for rejoining the union. On the other hand, who says that Russia did not try to join the club of wealthy nations? I remember the time starting from the late cold war period until now quite vividly. There was a time when Russia seemed to follow exactly this strategy. The plan was to end the conflict between NATO and Warsaw pact, to open up economically. Russia was never a pure democracy, but that cannot really be expected from a country with that history. Had the west embraced Russia, I believe there would have been at least a chance for a completely different political landscape today. Instead, the USA and the EU absorbed a huge part of the Russian sphere of influence and denied Russia entry into that sphere. It's not quite as bad as Versailles, but I see some similarities. China did just what you proposed and the west embraced China. That turned out just as bad for the west as the strategy to keep Russia under the rug. The problem in both cases is that the west did not attempt to create a sustainable world order, it just tried to freeze the balance of power that it found after the cold war. We now see two variations how that strategy failed miserably.

If most of the negative consequences of a ukrainien war is already done for Russia, it has less to lose (because it already suffered those losses anyway) and more to gain with an invasion. If Russia succeeds to conquer Kiev, take down the government and install a puppet like in Belarus. They will have won a new puppet that would do what Moscow asks, and would take steps away from the west in stead of towards… If the cost or consequences of such an invasion are only minor worse then the consequences that it is already suffering (or going to suffer) due to just the build up and intimidation, then that extra cost will be nothing compared to the win of getting a puppet at your border in stead of a new NATO ally… I fear we are not far from this point…

Germany isn't giving any weapons exactly because it is not in a position to "threaten" anything. Germany is a hostage of Russia, sitting on its Gas needle. Even if Germany makes the decision to abandon Nordstream 2, Russia may just say "well..we are not shipping the gas over Ukraine and Polish pipelines any more... so either NS2, or no gas from us". In any case, it is lose-lose situation for EU (and even more so for Ukraine). If there is no NS - EU gonna have a cold winter (especially, Germany). If there is NS - essentially, it is the act of cooperation with the aggressor and a public statement to the whole world "keep doing your military "exercises" and interventions wherever you like..." It was claimed to be be holiday resort but what in reality was something quite different... heavy duty piers, well hidden helipad, barrack like buildings barely with any windows.. and everything was made of concrete. It could easily been used as military forward base to cut shipping lines and support invasion of isles. Finnish police/military got clue on this and investigated then took action. Same company had more propertiea and projecta in area.. all along most important shipping lanes to/from Turku. Company got evicted by national security basis. This depends on whether you think Putin is a rational actor. There are many reasons to think otherwise. Putin is an old KGB hand who is well schooled in Marxism and Leninism, but has no grasp of macroeconomics, as he has demonstrated on many occasions. As a strategic thinker, he is prone to what the Soviets called "adventurism": He has lavished attention on distant, shaky dictatorships like Syria and Venezuela while conceding great power and influence in Central Asia to China. He is obsessed with a fear of democracy, conceived as a cancerous evil which has swept over Eastern Europe and to his very door. His closest associates are militant nationalists who share his dream of rebuilding the Soviet Union. He is less like a statesman than a Godfather who is making the Ukrainians an "offer they can't refuse". So what will he do when they refuse it? For those who ask "If Putin really wanted to invade Ukraine, he'd have done it already.": You forget about the most important incentive to ANY politician`s activity: his citizen approval ratings. In the eyes of many (if not majority) of Russian citizens, their president is a "Great protector from the Western threat". The "Great liberator of Russian population" in neighboring countries. Since 2014 there was an enormously successful propaganda campaign launched, to justify Crimea annexation and encouragement of the separatistic actions on Ukraine`s land. Both were viewed by the population the "achievements", while in reality, both have severe economic (and political) consequences. That is not only in terms of international sanctions: the financial burden of Crimea maintenance has been offloaded from Ukraine`s shoulders and put on Russia`s budget. Essentially, he needs to hold the balance between the local approval rating gains from such acts of weapon rattling (and sometimes shooting) and the penalty his country actually pays after each such act. Because if the penalty becomes too unbearable for the Russians - even propaganda may become ineffective. When the fridge is empty, you kind of stop caring what TV says. Maintaining the status quo of "Ukraine in war" is very beneficial for Russian government as it is an awesome foundation for creating the nations comparison narratives, like "Look at Ukraine: they've chosen West and now they are in war. You (my dear citizens) are not in war, because I protect you". If you would watch Russian national TV channels since 2014, you will notice 1) the mentioning of "Ukraine" is just abnormal high 2) the "protection" motive is a common thread for all its narratives. Current, "military exercises" are portrayed by Russian media as "protection campaign against NATO" (despite obviously they do the opposite). This should boost the approval ratings, which has fallen critically low.
@milaro222
2 жыл бұрын
Putin is not considered a protector, since no one considers the West a real threat, and no propaganda is needed to justify the annexation of Crimea, since the vast majority supported it anyway, this is a matter of justice and economic losses do not bother anyone, given that the real losses were from falling oil prices, and the cost of Crimea is insignificant.

I think that what is not mentioned in the video is what will happen if Russia does not invade. Same stuff - strengthening of NATO, arms race, less money from imports, and probably sanctions, but in addition, Ukraine will develop its own ballistic missiles systems able to reach Moscow (they are doing it right now) and improve its anti-air and anti-ship capabilities (one division of domestically produced anti-ship batteries already exist and second/third are on its way). Additionally, it got deals to manufacture drones from Turkey, which wrecked the Russian-backed Armenia army a few months ago. This in addition to the falling economy and population/demographic decline forces the Russian hand, it is now or never. In summary - I think that the best outcome for Russia is to get concessions by negotiations and improve relations with the west in long run. If this fails, then the attack is a less risky but comparably bad option...

Many things you've mentioned are not actually bad for Russia. Are they bad for Russian imperialistic ambitions? Yes. Are they bad for Russian people? No, not at all. Russia (or rather its government) has frozen in time living by cold war standards of "good", that is the problem. Russia has nuclear weapons. Do you even realize what attacking nuclear nation means? Nobody in sane mind would ever do that. "Security problem" is barely a problem for Russia, as long as they have nukes. Actually, their military investments are just disproportional to the economy investments (which are outstandingly low). Instead of focusing on real problems, they try solve the imaginary "NATO problem"... While, their "solution" to the "problem" actually looks like extinguishing fire with gasoline... At this point, it does not even matter to if they invade or not: they made NATO countries to start remembering, why NATO was actually created, re-initiating NATO "expansion" process with the new force.

I am from Latvia (a NATO country) The only thing provoking Russia is democracy. Russia has no problems with China or North Korea, Belarus. Countries with corruption, censorship, dictatorship. As soon as Ukraine started on the path to democracy, problems began. Bad comparison with Mexico. The United States has not recently annexed part of Mexico, and the US president has not openly expressed the view that Mexico should not exist. The United States is not concentrating its forces on the Mexican border. Russia is doing all these things. If the United States did all that, Mexico would have every right to ask for help.

Libya had one of the best standards of living of any African country before 2011, now you can buy slaves on the open market. And you are blaming Russia for not wanting the same fate as Libya? Even the Russian people who oppose Putin are vehemently against NATO expansion. So democracy has nothing to do with it.

All wrong. First it is the USA that has no problem with Saudi Arabia a bloody dictatorship invading Yemen, or when they invade Iraq based on WMD lies, or stealing elections. Second Nato was created as a buffer against the Soviet Union and the Warsaw Pact. In 1989, Nato had 15 member states and about 800 people working at its Brussels headquarters. With the demise of the Soviet Union, one might have thought that Nato would be disbanded in 1991-but one would be wrong! In fact, since then, Nato has expanded from having 15 countries to 30, while 4,000 people now work in an HQ that was opened a decade after the Warsaw Pact dissolved in 1999. No wonder Russia feels threatened.

Bit of explanation from Indonesia pulling back their order to buy SU-35, as Indonesians the pulling order is beside CATSA sanctions, it's also from Chinese threat at South Chinese Sea, the idea off pulling it off the order is if Chinese wanted to expand on SCS it's better to not use weapon that they're already can copy, it's also important to us not to rely business on one side (too focused on US and it's allies sometimes make our natural resources get plundered but too focused on Russia and it's allies sometimes make our political a bit of mess). All at the cost of moving troops to their borders where the largest threat is to them. Also scored a good trade deal with China plus Ukraine is less likely to push to join NATO within the seeable future. If they feel insecure for domestic reason there is two basic arguments by autocratic governments to repair the situation:1. The Foreign agents are funding and training political opponents and more laws are needed to gain more control( then used over all citizens) 2. Some neighbouring country directly threathens right now the very existence of the country. These arguments simply tell that the intelligence has reported acceptance number going down and opponents have started to feel more relaxed and are coming nagging into the open. Of course NATO alliance uses the situation to expand. Donbass and Crimea and Ukraine and Kaliningrad have been pain in buttom and Ukraine joining NATO would stabilize the new cold war which would feel much better than current extremely unstable situation. @@isopodmike2204 First of I`m not a comrade. People can try and understand and sympathize with the Russian point of view and not be "comrades". Attitudes like yours are stupid because they just make you expose and double down on your own biases instead of looking at things objectively. The Russians want a buffer between themselves and NATO a military alliance specifically made against Russia. They don`t want the Russian heartland to be attacked directly and they don`t want to have to spend billions more for defense in order to counter growing Ukrainian military strength. Invading from a Russian perspective is smart since the clock works against them. That coup the Americans pulled to overthrow democratically elected Yanukovych didn`t help either. Ukraine also has lands that Russia considers historically theirs where millions of Russians live to this day.

I'm British and I disagree with various points... 1. Gas, who else can supply and deliver gas in the volumes Europe needs, no one else even comes close. China would happily buy it's gas. 2. Why would Russia invade Ukraine when it can just destroy it's infrastructure/energy/water and disable the country. 3. Sanctions really... China supplies Russia goods and services. If sanctione hurt they wouldn't be knocking on Ukraine's door. Final point from me. 4. USA and most of the world have massive debt, most government are bankrupt servicing their debts never mind starting a conflict with Russia

I think we can learn lessons from the inter war period in Germany. The people of the Weimar Republic suffered greatly due to the sanctions imposed on Germany after WW1. This created an atmosphere of 'incendiary ideology' which was fuelled by none other than Hitler himself. If the Russian economy goes south that might not be a victory that is most likely going to cause another desperate event in history led by the populace of Russia who (let's not forget) aren't even in favour of an invasion as it stands but if their lives get turned upside down due to sanctions they will most likely demand some sort of desperate action which will likely swing the general public in favour of war against the west.

Right… so Russia attacks the west, gets greedy and attacks on too many fronts at once, the rest of the world unites against it (and its few allies) and defeats them in a long and drawn out war with millions of dead and Russia im ruins. Then, the allied forces occupy Russia, split it up into different administrative zones, prosecute its leaders and disband its military. Once a democracy is installed, they are slowly allowed to rejoin the rest of the world as an independent nation. Oh, but Germany will keep the east for 40 years and build a wall around it and shoot everybody trying to escape. Did I get it right?

Guess what -- it took Russia about three days to completely overwhelm them. And if you think Ukraine has strengthened its military over the past few years,, you should take another look at how much Russia has strengthened its military since 2008. In all honesty I don't see Russia invading anytime soon. Putin is a very smart man and has definitely learnt from past history. Frankly I think the Russian's have partly achieved their objectives i.e. Ukraine not joining NATO. With the current invasion hysteria, Ukraine is basically destabilized, making it difficult to join the NATO alliance. In the end I'm quite certain an agreement that will allow all parties involved to save face will be reached. As for a possible new arms race, I equally don't see Russia try to directly compete with the combined strength of NATO. I'm willing to bet that the present Russian Federation has definitely learnt a lesson or 2 from the Soviet Union's mistakes, and I believe the modernization of the Russian military, while steady, is and will be measured and smart.
@Gibblard

Ukraine isn't really destabilized tho. There's YT videos interviewing everyday citizens and they're not very scared. It actually more so uniting Ukraine because tons of their civilians either joined the military/reserves or began taking arms lessons from the mili in order to protect themselves. this also really unified the country into wanting to join NATO
