A hand pump cost MUCH less than a normal basketball and they are available everywhere. These are un-recyclable, have a much shorter lifetime, and cost MUCH more to manufacture since they require machines that use expensive, virgin/urecyclable powered resins as the base material, take upwards of an hour to create a single ball, and cost hundreds of thousands of dollars each, vs the current factories all over the world that employ hundreds of people who can each crank out 30-40 balls every hour from recycled rubber, scrap leather, and glues that cost essentially nothing and last essentially forever. All nothing more than a huge marketing ploy. And watch the video comparisons - they don’t bounce NEARLY as high as regular balls.

The problem is, tera preview does not solve the fact that tera introduces pure chance into a game. When facing a sweeper, a single wrong turn can end the game... and there are many situations where you can force your opponent to have to guess a 50-50. I can either ice spinner or close combat a kingambit. If ice spinner expecting tera flying and they don't, the game ends. Knowing that the kingambit can only tera flying does not eliminate this gameplay loop. Pokemon are designed with weaknesses. Volc and kingambit are 4x weak to common attacking types, espathra is extremely vulnerable to priority, dark, and ghost types. Bax has a million weaknesses. The risk-reward, and finding a way of putting your pokemon in positions to succeed, is what the skill expression of this game is. Typing is the most fundamental tuning knob for pokemon. To introduce randomness into this area will always be problematic - team preview cannot alleviate that. Now: the question is, what do we want as competitive players? This is just the flavor of gen 9. It's not that serious. If you don't like it, don't play. I personally don't because I hate that this game has become getting a sweeper in, forcing my opponent to guess, then ending the game. But that's just me.

I see some benefits and some flaws. Benefits: Doesn’t use leather, but instead, rubber. Leave pigs alone. We know the U.S won’t leave Oil alone, so rubber it is. Doesn’t use air. I think using air in basketballs is kinda a waste if we don’t need to make them use air. Holes might help with gripping. Flaws: As people who’ve used it say, it might actually be less grippy when used by sweaty hands. Might be uncomfortable. Arrow dynamics might be different, but knowing’s that they’re made for professional basketball, there won’t be a single gust of wind in the court, so that’s less likely to be a problem.

Additive manufacturing is not new. We've had it for about 1.5 CENTURIES, but it was almost all injection molding. Getting a mold that is super precise is expensive (and requires a reductive manufacturing process, but you only need to do that once per mold. Some people don't consider it additive because of this, but mathematically it is if you compare the amount of wasted material because the more you make with the mold the smaller that percentage becomes.) Injection molding is only really worth it if you plan on producing a LOT of something. We could have made this basketball before matured 3d printing technology appeared, but it would have been ridiculously expensive for a ball that will probably be made maybe a few thousand times a year. That's what 3d printing is good for, making relatively small batches of intricate things in an inexpensive way, which is much more amazing than it sounds. It's not amazing because it created additive manufacturing (because it absolutely DID NOT) it's amazing because it cuts costs for small batches or prototypes by an insane amount. A LOT of what you do as an engineer is finding the cheapest and best way to do something, and 3d printing has created a new avenue for other engineers to do that for their own work.
