Really that overpriced? It's a decently built hardware with really neat software. AFAIR audio software IS expensive, as most "creative pro" software. A package like that for like $1400 is a pretty regular price. Of course you can do almost everything that device can do with a PC or MAC and some FREE software, but not nearly as convenient and fast. It's like with Photoshop and GIMP. You will do with GIMP almost all you can do with Photoshop, but if you're pro and you need super fast and convenient way to do your job - PS just pays off.

There is nothing else quite like it in sound or UI and I think the uniqueness is what justifies the price really. I made an album on it in pubs and in the park. It's wildly expensive. I get around the velocity sensitivity by adjusting the envelope to a very short attack, so if you hit the key really quick, it plays the sound quietly. There are a few all-in-one production instruments that are cheaper. Generally these are called "grooveboxes". The most popular ones, right now, are the Novation Circuit and the Korg Electribe; though there are others, like the Casio XW-PD1. There are also older groovebox models, like the Yamaha RM1X, Roland MC-505, et al; these range in quality from "okay" to "legendary", though they're old and no longer being made, so they're more likely to need repairs or retrofitting before being reliable to use. Google around for "groovebox" and you'll find a lot of info.

OMGooooooowd....I've literally been able to afford an OP 1 for about 3 years........and I somehow waited until now to decide to get one....and now they're twice the price they were when I last looked, so....aaargh. It's *kind* of like the TB303 all over again for me. When will I learn? Grasp the Nettle. Grasp the ***kin Nettle. Happy New Yeah y'all......

@Niger Nelly Not really, most people who try the OP-1 really dislike it. It does a few things well and everything else it's bad at to the point where you don't want to make music with it. The ones who like it really like it, the rest wouldn't incorporate it in their recording setup unless they were forced at gunpoint.
@alexanderfalkhammar3068

@Niger Nelly You said; "Every artist love the synth", that's kind of a broad and bold statement. I've worked with music for 10 years and neither I nor any of my producer friends actually like the OP-1. There are hundreds of other synths that can sound like it and it's not fun to work with. Furthermore, the limitations of the synth, like the number of tracks for recording and limited editability make most tunes made with the OP-1 sound like they were made on a OP-1 (that's not a compliment). If people want to buy an OP-1, then that's their prerogative. But saying that everyone loves the OP-1 sets really bad expectations for people who have to save up to buy one.

A nice guitar costs more. Golf clubs cost more. Any vintage analog synth costs more. It is not expensive for what it actually is. Save $15 a week for a year and you can have one.

Plus with the retarded supply/demand curve right now they’ll get more and more expensive as you save up. If they don’t do another run of these this year, they’re gonna slowly creep into $2000 territory. All these KZitem channels basically advertised it as a toy for rich people, so now here we are.

I find it sounding very tinny and the keys are crap. I rather spend 350 euros for a Waldorf. And/or JD-Xi for 450. And you have a great set. In case of the waldorf add a keystep and you’ll have a great little piece you can take along too.

It feels like the TI-83 of synths. It's not expensive because of manufacture cost, it's expensive because of usefulness.

Actually, the reason the TI graphing calculators are so expensive is because the "Church of TI" lobbied all of the major educational textbook publishers to use the TI brand of calculators as official textbook material thus creating an artificial monopoly that is required in nearly every single school in all of the United States. The TI graphing calculator is actually a great study into monopolies in general, such as that there are different types of monopolies (artificial and natural); and how they affect things such as price (a natural monopoly drives prices downward while an artificial monopoly drives prices upward).

That was a great review. You have answered all my questions about that particular product in four and a half minutes. And you did it with humor. I do think now I would consider taking the plunge for one, that is as long as Behringer would stop releasing so many beautiful synths and drum machines. So many toys available with a limited amount of money....maybe one day! Thanks

I've used several DAW's and found myself ending up with Propellerhead Reason. It's not a particularly popular choice because it doesn't have all the standard plugins (which changed very recently actually). I found it to have a pretty smooth learning curve. I hate to say it, but I do think you'd be best off pirating several DAW's and play around with them for a while. It takes time to find out if producing is something for you and if yes, with what software.

2:39 it's only $1000 (or more) if you want one NOW. I just picked one up off ebay for a cool $800 which is damn near the original retail price a few years ago (now it retails for 1200 from the manufacturer, and it's never in stock). after checking the listings everyday for about 2 months, i found a dude who picked his up cheap and chose to pass the savings on to me, simple as that. i still count myself lucky though, his offer was only up for half a day before i bought it!

I had the op-1 for about 1 month and sold it. The videos on KZitem looked great and it seemed to me like an awesome portable synth to make music as an " ideas notebook"...portable, small, etc... It did not quite cut it for me. I hated the virtual tape mechanism to record on...if you screwed up, you had i think only 1 undo and that was it. I was not impressed at all with the factory presets and the effects to me were not that great. I have been making my music on virtual synths and cubase 5 for the past 5 years. I had a nice executive office chair that broke and instead of buying another one, I just used a regular kitchen table chair. It started to get uncomfortable after an hour of use and making music, that I decided to buy the op-1 so i could lay back in bed and play around with it that way. It is a well built and heavy synth for being that small..but that was another thing about it...being a bit heavy, it was kind of uncomfortable using it in bed. So in the long run, I bought a new office chair and went back to working like I did before...I can´t complain now...I have Groove Agent 1 in Cubase and Kontakt for sampling plus all the famous VSTs to make music. I must have about 80 vsts and have downloaded hundreds of interesing audio samples which i manipulate in cubase5...so getting bored with samples and presets is not an option for me. I guess if you travel around a lot on the bus and have limited time to make music , then the op1 is probably for you. If not, buy yourself a good chair! hahaha. One final thing...I decided to give Teenage Engineering another try and bought the PO knockout 33...the mini sampler. It has it.s limitations,but it is pretty powerfull once you get the hang of it. I must confess that it is a lot of fun. I sample things from the my cell phone ( KZitem) and start to chop and build upon a drum beat. Happy synthing!
