Isn't it great to be able to have these insights and to look closely at a picture which would originally have been high up on a ceiling - with most of the detail wasted on most of us with less than perfect eyesight

I like the contrasts between light and dark, young and old and in the middle, a baby. Something in the middle. It's really symbolic to me of immortality and if it's commemorating a new birth in an aristocratic family, to me it's like it's saying "may this new baby live forever."

I remember seeing Tiepolo's great ceiling frescos in Wurzburg. Certainly worth the visit to see these and the baroque architecture of Balthasar Neumann. Another allegorical painting on a similar subject with some of the same characters - Venus, Father Time, Cupid, etc - is by Bronzino - a sublimely cool, precise painting compared with this much more emotional Tiepolo.

Thank you Ms. Treves! (I like a lot your English).

I’ve heard that there was an era in the past where painters used male models with prop breasts when they were painting female figures. ((Venus, in the painting above, is really giving me that vibe.)) Could anyone with the proper historical knowledge let me know if this is something true, or just a silly rumor? I’d really appreciate it!
