Not giving up a 'source' - ie a 'grass' - is vastly different to concealing evidence of a crime and those who committed it. In Aus that's called being an 'accessory after the fact'. For all the 'freedom demanding' Americans, should a photojournalist be allowed to withhold - ie conceal - photgraphic evidence of a terrorist planting a bomb at the base of Grant's Tomb or the Statue of Liberty or at the podium where the POTUS will speak?! Generally, a photojournalist randomly taking photos of a newsworthy (criminal) event / activity 'as it happens' owes nothing to those involved in the act. Police have a duty to investigate and locating evidence from third partys is part of that, police will often ask anyone that may potentially have recorded anything wether they have body cam footage or not, more angles and footage is better for evidence and helps avoid the 'police have set me up the bodycam footage is lying' argument if it can be shown from multiple sources, you are allowed to refuse if its only a request however if theyve obtained a warrant for it you can no longer refuse without risking contempt of court or perverting the course of justice and they may seek to prosecute you for withholding or worse if you delete it. (Generally if theyve got a warrant they know, rather than hope, you had footage that can be used for evidence)

Police can and will use any evidence that they can find, its not about making them do it themselves, they absolutely do have footage from their bodycams already they are after any corroberating footage or footage from other angles, afterall many of the protestors that commited a crime were probably covering their face whilst the police and their body cams came arround, they may not have been so carefull when it was a photojournalist or another protester filming. The police politely requested he provide them the images, he declined as was his right. However all the police need to do is go to a judge and get a warrant and then he will be obliged to hand over the images as evidence. And yes any member of the public that was filming with their phones could be in the same position if the police are aware they were filming/taking pictures, its only because hes a journalist with a higher public profile that hes making a fuss over this and going on tv for this.
