Why isn't Austria part of Germany?
For centuries Austria and hundreds of other German states were parts of the Holy Roman Empire, which from the mid-15th century onwards was led by Habsburg Austrian Archdukes. Later the Austrians led the German Confederation before they were beaten by the Kingdom of Prussia, which formed the North German Confederation, without them, and then eventually reorganized into the German Empire. Austria then tried, once more, to join Germany after the collapse of the Habsburg monarchy in 1918.
