N64 and GameCube were failures because they were prime examples of Nintendo snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Both systems had the potential to smash Sony but Nintendo purposely limited both by using less robust media which made it hard to fully tap the power of both systems. Now Nintendo is a casual game company.

I still disagree on it pal. It failed in comparison to the newer runner up Sony and its more higher innovations but a failure would be the Wii U over there, Sega Saturn, Virtual Boy, Google stadia, etc. It still had sales and a hardcore audience that is dedicated to this day. I hate how people just look at graphs and make that assumption when it should be up to Nintendo on whether they mark it as a success or a failure. The failure* in the n64 was only the DD add on. Idc if Protomario claims it as such I think the guy isn't always right either. Also yeah, it did not sell well in Japan but remind me how big is that population to lets say America again?

The N64 wasn't the only failure. You could consider 1993-1995 as a bad time for consoles and gaming in general as a lot of the consoles had botched launches, poor software support, and the market was simply oversaturated. The Playstation dominated and continues to dominate even to this day. Right now, the Switch and PS4 are killing it and the Xbox One is pretty much a third rate system with the lack of exclusives and mostly remasters of older games. Granted there's some decent games but not that many.

Yeah it had a great first year in 2017 but it needs to keep up the pace otherwise people will not be too interested. There is a lot of things they can do to make people interested in the Switch but like they learned from the Wii U it needs to have better Marketing and More Great Games from Third Party Developers.

Great video. When talking specifically about consoles Nintendo has struggled the last few generations with the big exception being the Wii and the most glaring failure being the Wii U. However what many don't acknowledge is the absolute domination of the handheld market Nintendo owns. They haven't had any close competition ever in the handheld space and the PSP isn't even close even though it sold 80 million because the DS sold 155 million. Merging the development teams for both the handheld market and the console market with their new hybrid device the Switch was a stroke of genius because they've carved out their own market - a hybrid device that allows you to play AAA games on the go. Both the console market (lack of portability) and the smartphone market (lack of AAA games) can't offer what the Switch offers which is why it's a runaway success.

I can see why it was a failure in many regards it only sold about 30 million units compared to PS1's 100 million units sold, it had an awkward controller and the cartridges hurt it more than helped, final fantasy 7 being a good example and at the time people buying the PS1 as a cheaper alternative to a CD player, so while 1st party games on the N64 were amazing its 3rd party suffered drastically which has been a common trend until recently.
@madcommodore

The N64 could add more trick effects to improve the low poly look of the games BUT ultimately it couldn't chuck around anywhere near as much polygons as the PS1. Nintendo only survived due to the Pokemon craze at the time and massive sales of Gameboy along with a billion crappy Pokemon games released constantly for the little kids. It's like when Frost escapes from Blade surrounded by little kids. It's a shitty way to 'win'.

The consoles that failed with nintendo have some of the more interesting pokemon things in them especially the N64 and Gamecube. The first and second generation pokemon games get a major addition with the pokemon stadium games. Realy good to trade with stadium games and get a battle frontier kind of thing in those games in early pokemon. Then the gamecube was epic in pokemon making 2 almost main series pokemon games with one pokemon game having an extra promotional disc. That disc allow us to have jirachi as a pokemon and can be traded over to the generation 7 games. After that, the wiiu had a great concept as a home console 2ds xxxl, but it didn't sell as much especially the touchscreen controller which should have been made cheaper and in greater quantities. The virtual boy, at this point why they don't have all 14 or so virtual boy titles released for the 3ds with 3d slider functionality and compatible with 2ds?

I had a PS2, but switched to PC-gaming when I got bored of the terrible load-times (wait two minutes for a quick round of Worms ultimate mayhem? NO THANKS) and new games looking just like the old ones in terms of graphics (just compare NFS Undercover's PS2 version to the PC version, you can hardly call them the same game) and been almost exclusively gaming on PC (except for the occasional round of Tetris or Super Mario on the NES) for almost ten years now. I recently started collecting retro consoles and Nintendo's consoles are the only ones that interest me for the more recent ones. Why should I buy a Playstation or an X-Box? I can just buy one or two X-Box 360 controllers (best controller EVER), hook my PC up to my TV and play the same games the same way as the PS and X-Box consoles can. Most of those games have a PC version, which is better anyway and if they don't I can simply use an emulator and actually get a better experience (talking loading times and controller) on that. Nintendo, however? You just don't get the same feeling playing Mario or Pokemon on an emulator and the ways in which the handhelds and the big consoles work together to unlock extra content and stuff just doesn't work in emulation. It's funny to me that the Wii was such a success, cause I never cared and still don't care about this one and it's refresh. It just looks too generic and the controllers seem more like a stupid gimmick to me. Sure, the Wii is probably the best console ever for casual party games, which explains it's success, especially with middle-aged audiences, but I think for an enthusiastic gamer it doesn't offer much, besides it's exclusive Mario and Zelda games. The Wii just doesn't really stand out from the competition, which also had those weird movement-based controllers, just as an add-on, rather than the default and better games. The switch looks very interesting again. But since I newly acquired a SNES and a gamecube and I still have my NES that has long been the only console

Nintendo made some really bad choices and I think the consequences manifesting as really low sales was fair. But hopefully now with the Switch going forward they can learn from their mistakes and continue to make some great games.

Nintendo 64 games were very expensive to make. Did the computer equipment cost money to make every time. Or was it just a one thing over priced
