Nah, being one whose mother tongue is way different and has no connection or ancient roots with the Latin language- English, I assure that I assume that I am a pretty fluent english speaker even though I rarely speak it with people offline. (By the way, I sincerely apologize for my inaccurate in terms of vivid vocabulary and grammatically incorrect, pathetic way of writing/speaking English.)
As a Vietnamese, this is pretty accurate of when we said W as “Đáp lưu/dublu”!

Latin actually did have a "w" sound. It was the "v" letter. Romans had no "v" sound like modern Italian. They also had no "g" letter but did have the sound, which the letter "c" took. The letter "c" had a "k" sound and a "g" sound in some names and words such as "Gaul (1st century name for France". They also had no "j" sound or letter, but "i" had two sounds. Sometimes as "ee" sound and "yuh" sound in the beginning of latin "i" words.

It’s also worth noting that in Shakespearean English, U and V were used to represent both sounds interchangeably, but the symbol changed based on where in the word it’s used. At the beginning of a word, V is used, so the word “under” was written “vnder,” and U is used in the middle of words, so “live” is written “liue.”

I think the greek language was older than latin, so the ''W'' is from the letter omega ''ω'' that existed and was like a second ''o'' but instead of a short sound, it made a wider one and that's how ancient greeks could hear the difference between the two ''o'' and ''ω''. However, this quickly dissolved and for a good 1000 years (or more) greeks pronounce both the same. With a short ''o''.

The letter "w" was pronounced as "double-v" by Spanish/Latin. The letter "V" was used for sound of "u". For example, MVSEVM (MUSEUM), and (even) before that, "v" was also used for sound "w" just like VVILLIAM (WILLIAM). So therefore, U, V, W are interconnected (they are together in the standard english alphabet) They evolved from Ancient Latin, Old English, Roman Alphabets, Medieval English.

W is the semivowel form of U in the same way that Y is the semivowel form of I. If you say "uelcome" or "iellow" fast enough you get "welcome" and "yellow". W is known as "Double U" and Y is known as "Greek I" in many European languages (Spanish, French, etc.) V and U have been used interchangably throughout history as V is easier to carve into stone.

There was no “U” in ancient Latin. The letter “V” was used to represent both the W sound (‘water’) and the U sound (‘food’). Spelling wasn’t standardized in ancient Latin so sometimes when expressing the consonant W sound people would write either a double or a single V. The use of UU in addition to VV became popular at about the same time as the printing press. So the name comes from UU but the writing comes from VV, because prior to the printing press both were used to represent the same sound.

It actually goes back even further: in Latin Us and Vs were written the same way, like a V (AURUM was written like AVRVM), because context was enough to determine which one you meant, and carving curves is harder than carving straight lines. Using the same character for both Vs and Us remained for a while, and that's why W was written with either "VV" or "UU". Originally, they were essentially the same letter with two completely different pronunciations.

@@myspleenisbursting4825Yes you are right. V in old latin was english „u” or „w”. Those letters were so similar that there was no need to distinguish them, but when in vulgar latin „v” changed pronunciation to „v” like in english, they needed two symbols.

In Latin, the letters U and V were originally the same, representing either /u/ or /w/. But /w/ shifted to /v/, which became the main consonantal use of the letter, so the letter W was used to represent /w/. This was before the typographical forms U and V were distinct, so the letter I guess was mainly known as double U, and even after U and V became separate letters, despite it typographically being a double V, it retained the name "double U" from inertia.
