As someone who spent half my adult life in the music industry, this is how all labels, (whether indie or major) work. There's always a couple cash cow artists that the label relies on to fund the many smaller artists they just throw at the wall with minimal effort and bare bones budget to see if it blows up. Yet when the big artist is releasing they pour a disproportionate amount of their resources into making it big, and if it flops it's still the less established artists that take the hit. They'll either get dropped or have their budget and/or labour time allotted to them cut even further. It's a really bad system to support new artists and fails them 9 times out of 10.

this is why the weeknd was right to turn down drakes OVO label. he would have been "the guy that writes for drake". his biggest achievement would have been him singing hooks for drake. he took a risk, and it paid off. If a record label is owned by a superstar, the star has all the responsibilities to utilize his/her big platform to increase the reach of signed new artists. As you mentioned, Kanye was just not into taking up those burdens. Look at Aftermath, Em was a nobody when he joined but Dre was already a veteran in the game. Eventually Em became much more recognized than Dre. But Em's fame didn't stop 50 from going big. The Game was pretty big too as long as he was inside Aftermath. For a more recent example, Dreamville is doing excellent job. Cole seems to be very serious about his role as the leader. Keeping aside the fact that he has a very sharp eye for good talents, with all those ROTD albums and his S-tier feature verses on his fellow artists' albums, he is making sure the dreamers don't lose the hype. I think it's totally depending upon how much the leader is interested in shouldering the responsibilities. People like Dre and Cole are just natural leaders, while the likes of Eminem and Kanye are more concerned about polishing their own craft.

Youre forgetting one important thing, Dreamville has Ib! Every label needs that person that will run the whole operation and make sure every thing and everyone is looked after. An artist can never be that, they have to have someone like a Lyor Cohen or a Dame Dash etc to make sure the business is successful. Kanye for a time had Che Pope and now Push as the head. I think they both weren’t good fits cause theyre both artists, he needed a Dame Dash a Hovain or a Yams (R.I.P) to run things.

I think a large part of this label failing has a lot to do with where Kanye has been in life in recent history. He has gone through alot over the last 2-3 years and we all know stuff he has done hasn’t exactly been received well my everyone. When you add this on top of the past of Kanye not caring it becomes rather understandable. I don’t think saying Kanye west doesn’t care about what other people think is new but what is new relates to this almost “new generation” Ye. There is obviously no definition of what I’m referring to as this “new gen Ye” but to preface it’s the changes in recent memory we have seen from Ye from his divorce with Kim to his social media about free speech to his interview with tucker Carlson, Kanye is evolving as a new version of himself. Divorce is hard, not seeing your kids often is hard, seeing your ex wife date someone else is hard, being blasted by the media because you’re upset about your ex dating someone is hard. I could go on and on but the point is what this has done to Ye. Which I believe is a large part in the question of “why did his label fail”, I was diagnosed with ADHD at a young age. I’m not comparing me to Kanye by any means I’m just saying I understand how hard something can be with distractions and I don’t think anyone on this planet has more distractions than Ye does. To see this new version of him going on talk shows and such has been really cool for me because he seems very happy. To be honest I don’t know anything about the Industry side of music as I believe most don’t all I’m saying is how hard it is to succeed in any industry with the lack of focus and drive everyone else brings to the table. Elon musk can’t have a successful company just because his name is slapped on it, it takes work and dedication which Kanye has struggled with in the past stretch of time (until more recently).

But from like 2004-2019 they were doing pretty well. A good 15 years. For a vanity label (Which is what most of these artist-led labels are) I'd say that's pretty decent.

If I was an up and coming artist I would never sign to a famous artist 's label. For a start the famous artist will always be the priority and will get all the resources allocated to him/her, and they will not want to get outshone so to speak. So many of these types of labels have signed artists and then just shelved them permanently or used the artist to become ghost writers.

I think G.O.O.D. Music had a good success ratio of artists compared to other labels such as OVO label, Dj Drama’s Label, and so on. Looking back on the artist, the ones that were “failed” are Desiigner and 070 Shake (Desiigner already made it hard with copying another artist complete style and sound) Desiigner was going to fail if he did not switch and he did have support from the label over the years such as pushing his music like Life, Outlet, Timmy Turner, and a few more (not too many others that popped like those). 070 shake is interesting, but I do not know if the label knows how to market here and they have not tried, maybe due to Desiigner not popping off as they may have hoped (basically they do not want to put more cost in something that won’t get as much output). All the other artists signed to GOOD music have had long careers in different ways such as Big Sean, Pusha T, Teyena Taylor (not many people knew of her until the 5 project 2018 summer).
