Momota was once a player who could handle any sort of opponents style of play and win it all. His footwork and retrieving shots were amazing. Axelson gave up playing with Momota back then. Definitely after the accident Momota was never at the same level he was. Pity

I didn't know how nice players he is. He seems humble too. I wish he comes to Indian Himalayas and do meditation and spirituality for some time to heal his mind. He seems physically recovering but mind seems stuck in tragic incident of car accident of his. Love and Support from India 🇮🇳
Momota before accident had faster reaction and no hesitancy when moving towards shuttle. After accident he is always half a step slower and unsure. Don’t know if the problem is physical or mental or both but being the absolute smoothest and most unerring in the pro game was always his greatest weapon. It fucking hurts that we might never get to see that again.

Once you get an accident like that and you later get back pain, you become afraid to push yourself too much. You are worried about your body becoming fragile in some parts. Eye movements also slow down. I think a long break can help but it can go both ways. He had a long break after being banned but he came back stronger. This was because during the long break his body was still in good condition. This time, during a long break, can his body overcome or not, we can only pray and hope.

Lcw get an accident at November 2006 if not mistaken, he was injured and got six stitches on the back. After that, he suffered the same thing just like Momota now, but after 6-8 months, he managed to gain back his confidence and regain his gameplay quality.

Momota-san is one of the Japan's Greatest Male Badminton players, indeed after the accident, he clearly couldn't perform as he had ever before. This must be very... very difficult and frustrating for him. Best wishes from Indonesia, Momota-san
he was coming back very okay in Denmark Open 2021, about 95% full strength. However, the back injury in French Open 2021 is the start of his downfall.

The car accident has a big part, i think momota still suffering from emotionally and physically. Any human being after bad things happen specially a near tragic, you have a chance to loose your focus in any aspects in your life, sports nor the things you love the most, the dedication and the passion. Yes, you are right all he need is his fans and all his supporters and also a therapist. It takes a while before it will back but momota still young and i believed he will going to make it for a big comeback. 😇😇😇

Although the game is now way more offence oriented, its undoubtedly true that the accidents have severely affected his performance. Back then, even against top smashers like Axelsen, he would be able to make good smash returns, nowadays he just cant anymore. Hope he can bounce back but I feel like the accidents have taken too much of a toll in him.

The injury make him scared to go all out because he's scared of the pain of getting injured. Happened to me, after knee surgery, even though I have recovered 100%, I still have this fear in me that I might accidently hurt my knee again, thus I didn't go all out.

It's very easy to comment but takes a whole lot of things to understand . Getting back to play badminton after a horrific car accident is itself a sign of mental strength . Remember guys his fall in form is because of multiple reasons Defence - He had an orbital fracture resulting in double vision which was later corrected surgically. His reaction time has increased so he isn't able to cope up with his defence - The Chain works like this - Look - understand - estimate - react . - Problem with reacting to smashes by opponents . Offense - Back injury + Car accident + over abused body over long periods of practice + age . He isn't going in for attack as he isn't having a full fit back to execute and risk of reinjuring himself . Let him enjoy his time playing badminton . He had his best years back then and the best ever men's singles from Japan . Give him some time. I'm not bothered whether he performs well or not - as he got nothing to prove to himself or the world about his standard . He is undeniably a fighter giving his best irrespective of public opinion on him Cheers Kento 👍

Good video, thank you. To be honest, I personally think the other players haven’t really improved that much, including Viktor. It’s Kento who’s not been able to play to his true abilities. If he could, these guys have nothing on him.

Viktor improved a lot, he had a surgery in 2020 to fix the ankle that had been bothered him for a while, since the ankle surgery he is nearly unstoppable, his record speaks for itself. Post surgery Viktor’s winning percentage is above 90%. Where as before from 2015 to 2019 it was 70%. A near 20% jump in win rate is huge. Ironically Momota had the accident in 2020, this was very unfortunate, would love to see a healthy Axelsen vs peak form Momota.

From looking at other comments, I may kinda figured it out. Back then, you either knew how to attack 100%, or defense 100%. The idea of playing both cards wasn't exactly new, though still hadn't been perfected, especially trying to get the hang of being consistent with it. I think that was why momota was as strong as he was. He knew how to take advantage of this pretty widespread weakness. He changed the game before the players back then could even realize it. But as soon as the players had better adapted to play both styles simultaneously, with some even being pretty good at it, it's now momota that's being left in the dust. The question now would be is he going to be able to remap his play counter it? Or are we potentially seeing the final years or homestretch of his badminton career. Now I can be completely wrong and this whole thread was just a waste of time, so do feel free to correct any parts necessary. He seems like such a nice and down to earth guy, you can't help but feel sad for his current state. But i'm sure he knows that more than we do, so I won't go too far into it.

Yes, i do feel that, players nowadays already figure out his playstyle and incorporate it to their own. Hence, im also feeling that everyone already upgrade their skillset, becoming one step ahead of him.. Aside from that.. I do feel that he really has changed, unsure, lots of hesitancy. Almost like the pre-accident Momota has died. Im guessing he had some sort of trauma or something, not sure, but feels like it.. Really wish he could be back to the top.. Maybe not being the best, but able to compete with Axelsen and the rest like he used to is good enough

Comparing his previous play style and current, Momota used to play very defensive and patient. He likes to control the game & wearing his opponent down before going for the kill. During his peak you won't see much attacking game from him, mostly pushing shuttle to the baseline, superbly sharp drops and net play. His current playstyle lacks both defensive and patient, it's more to attacking all the time. I don't know the reason why he's not bringing back his old gamestyle but clearly current style don't suit him.
