This happens in Australia all the time. An American chain expands into Australia, the first store does really well because we go to see what the hype is about. The American company misinterprets the information and they over saturate the market. Australians have an intolerable aversion to American culture and love independently owned small businessess. Then the American company realises that there's a culture gulf and cross pollination doesn't work between the May Flower and the Desert Pea.

Tomáš Petrík One thing you should take into consideration is that a donut from KK is much smaller than what you see in Europe. I saw what you call a “donut” in Eastern Europe a while back, and was shocked by the size. Donuts are supposed to be small in size, not as big as a cake. As far as American breakfast culture is concerned, a coffee and donut as a quickie breakfast is what you get when you are in a rush only. Otherwise, you are probably just having breakfast at home. As an aside to this, I have to ask a question. Why are there so many American fast food restaurants in Europe, in general? Traveling throughout the various countries, I couldn’t help but notice the plethora of KFCs, BKs, etc everywhere. Even in France, where they used to burn them(I think). These restaurants are franchises, which means that a European business owner is at the helm of it. Where are the European restaurants chains of the same caliber? Do they exist?
@AnotherBroadcast
5 жыл бұрын
@@starventure There's only American fast food stores in Europe because fast food like that (restaurant-style that you could find both in the city or on the highway) is really a very American concept. It's all American franchises because those have a tried and proven concept and whatever it is, it is going to be something totally new in Europe that only an international business trying to expand its business would be trying to set up, and whenever it does catch on here, who's going to start a business trying to compete with a large American chain? Gotta say that the amount of foreign chains is exploding though. I'm Dutch, and it used to be just McDonald's, Burger King, Pizza Hut and Domino's in in 2000 (you know, simple stuff, burgers and pizza). Then came KFC and Subway, those are everywhere now, same with Starbucks. Starbucks used to be something really special, because you only had it abroad when you went to London or Berlin or something, then one came in Amsterdam and it was still special. Now they're everywhere, and no-one goes there anymore. Now Dunkin Donuts, Baskin Robbins, Papa John's and Taco Bell are trying out here, I have the feeling that Taco Bell is definitely not doing well. I believe Wendy's tried to open here but their name is already copyrighted here.

There are some Asian fast food chains that have entered into the California market, so the saturation argument makes no sense. As far as I know, there's not too many standalone Krispy Kreme stores in Australia. Frankly Australia can be difficult to break into (see also: Starbucks). That said, they've been stocked in 7 Eleven stores for years now, and as 7 Eleven has expanded its share of the petrol station game in Australia, Krispy Kreme has become more accessible to more people. Perhaps not in the way Krispy Kreme intended, but honestly I wouldn't call their entry into Australia a failure.

When Krispy Kreme first came here, Aussies wanted to go and see what all they hype was about. They had some different flavours, but I think most people realised that they were overrated and overpriced. So people would most likely buy them as a treat, and less often than they would buy donuts from the major supermarket chains or their local bakery. Having said that, in Melbourne there’s more competition with places like Walker’s donuts, Daniel’s donuts (one of their stores is open 24/7), That’s Alotta Donuts (also open 24/7), offering just as much variety that’s probably more suited to Australian tastes. Also, there’s seems to be quite a few people saying that KK donuts are too sweet. I think I remember them having to change the recipe before they could open here because the amount of sugar in the American recipe was too high for retail food standards (or something along those lines!). If that’s true, then can you imagine how sweet they are in the USA?!

Also there are other stores better than Krispy creme. I mean like Melbourne has dessert places why have a doughnut and some are more affordable and better value than a fought nut. I paid 17 AUD for a cookies and cream doughnut and cookies and cream shake. It wasn't worth it. Also Australians are more educated now and know what to eat less of there for we eat less junk food and think carefully of what we're going to eat. We'll eat cereal, egg, muesli bar on the go out breakfast drink like UP and GO. As to what i love are yoghurt, I can never have enough of that. Businesses need to cater to the market and need to do research before expanding to other markets like you just can't go in blind or else you risk loosing your business.

its not just a recent health fad...australians tend to eat breakfast at home...you know toast...cereal...tea..etc etc..breakfast out is a weekend treat and often includes omlettes and good coffee...not donuts...this has been the case for decades...oh and bacon of course...

I remember when the first Melbourne store opened, sat in the drive through line for an hour and a half-2 hours, they doubled our order so me, my brother and best mate had 48 doughnuts to divide between us. Was over them before we had finished the second box.

I remember when Krispy Kremes first opened in Australia. Someone brought some boxes to my school so we could have some. However, until now I never realised it had only just opened. I just remember it was around 2003-ish.

Funny cause KK and Starbucks expanded too quickly, but also there is a link - VERY HIGH SUGAR. In it's foreground reason, Aussies don't like eating sugar all day, we consider it as a dessert not a damn all day meal replacement.

I'm from Melbourne, and the initial buzz was interesting and I was keen to try the ultimate doughnut. However, once I did taste them, it made it clear that this was not a great thing. This style of the doughnut is not what I was used to and was not an improvement either. It is far too oily. There are other doughnut shops around now that do adhere to the Aussie idea of what a doughnut ought to be. I'm looking at you, Daniel's.

Krispy Kreme has the worst doughnuts I've ever had, and the smallest. They're always either hot and slimy, or crystallized all the way through after they cool. I prefer a thick, yeasty-tasting doughnut with simple toppings. Or, Maine potato doughnuts. Definitely try to have those at some point.

On my way home tonight (a 15km drive in Western Australia) I drove past 2 places that could sell me a Krispy Kreme. Sure they are not dedicated stores like they use to be, but here they are, still doing business. I feel your title should be "Why Krispy Kreme needed to adopt a different business model for Australia", Because unless your idea of "failure" in the US is a ridiculously high bar? I'd say Krispy Kreme were still doing ok. In fact i'd call their Australian business model a pretty effective gear change. I don't really like their doughnuts, but I think you're being grossly unfair.
