As a female who grew up in the 80’s as a product of baby-boomer parents who instilled rather Victorian values of what it meant to “act like a lady,” “Hit me with your best shot” was EARTH SHATTERING for me. This song blasted the doors wide open for me. I began to see myself, not as “of the weaker sex”, but as EMPOWERED. This song didn’t mean ANYTHING about men hitting women, or about actual shooting, it meant, “Whatever you’ve got, bring it Baby, because I CAN HANDLE IT. I am stronger than whatever garbage you are trying to throw at me.” Seriously…BOOM! This was mind-blowing and life altering to me. To this day, it is my life anthem. Cancer? “HIT ME WITH YOUR BEST SHOT!” I’m really sad to hear that Pat “retired” this song. It’s too bad she couldn’t see it from another perspective.

Liberals ruin everything they touch. Not pushing a political party or Sarah Palin, but in one of her ads, she used a crosshair and indicated she was targeting a certain city or state to get their vote. The nutty controlled-Left said -- w/o proof [because they just made it up] -- that this was condoning violence. I too, am a product of the 80s and just loved this song and also thought it was about taking on others or the like who thought that they could defeat me. Once again, today's DEMs destroy everything they touch.

Definitely a memory song for me. I was divorced with 2 young daughters in my mid twenties, PAINFULLY shy, but I could sing. I had offers from a couple of metro Detroit area club bands, but decided that wasn't the kind of mommy image I wanted to present to my 2 little girls. So I got into a couple of Christian groups, singing for the Lord instead of singing for money. One group was rock gospel, and we did some great music. This was one of a couple of songs that Bob, our lead guitar player, always liked for us to warm up with. He loved the guitar solo. I loved to rock those vocals. The guys would jokingly call me 'Peggy Benatar'. When singing . . . I could be that strong, self confident person that I wasn't in real life. By the end of my twenties, I had found more of that strength and self confidence in my own soul.

One thing that strikes me about Pat and Neil is that they must be one of the hardest-working couples in the music business. When Pat's career started to take off, she was playing in Houston (my home town) on such a frequent basis that I started to get the impression that she was a local act. Actually, they played Houston so often because a strong fan following had developed there, but she and her band were still playing nation-wide too. Man, did all that work and constant touring pay off! While I'm a little disappointed that she retired this song from her live set list, I really admire this woman.

Anybody that grew up in the '80s (or ever watched Fast Times At Ridgemont High) could tell you how big of an impact Pat Benatar had in the music industry and in pop culture. She was everywhere! Sex symbol to the guys, role model for the girls. I remember in Jr. High I was in 9th grade and my sister was in 7th grade. She was in the school band and they had a show for the students. I can't remember all the songs they played, but I do remember hearing Hit Me With Your Best Shot. All the songs were just the music playing, no vocals. The band did a great rendition of it. And I felt kinda weird because I was actually proud of my little sister. She played an instrument after the band instructor told me I had no rhythm and couldn't keep a beat. She made the family suffer through her practicing her clarinet for the show. But I was proud of the results. Goes back 40 years to admit that.

I had my own opinion about this matter with my wife who informed me this song was one of those songs that gave her strength to push through life. We both shortened the opinion that like so many famous songs, these songs are truly owned by the public. Those people with whom each song had a hand in shapping all our lives, that yes legally it's the artist's song, but socially it is not. Doesn't the artist have the social responsibility to listen to the people with whom these songs molded their fans into the people they are today?

With that being said, it's possible that another artist could "take over" a song and make it theirs. There are plenty of cover songs that became more famous as a cover song than the song by the original artist. Whitney Houston's cover of I Will Always Love You, for example, was originally written and recorded by Dolly Parton. It was even a hit for Dolly on the Country charts, but Whitney's version is arguably the better known version nowadays. Wikipedia was pretty sketchy on covers of Hit Me With Your Best Shot, only mentioning Kelly Clarkson performing the song live.

I was in a band in high school in the 80's. We were strictly a cover band. We had two female lead singers, so of course we had to do this song! And honestly, it fit us. Everyone that listened to us always enjoyed it when we played this song, and we got that same energy back from the crowd. It's too bad that Pat Benatar came to hate the song, because she absolutely killed it when she sang it!

I saw Pat Benatar live in 2007 at Casino Aztar. She never sang this song during the show leaving everyone to believe it would be her encore. The song never came and she left us with this " I don't perform that song anymore" as the crowd was screaming 'Hit me with your best shot" She exited the stage and that was it. For all these years I wondered why, thanks to the Professor of Rock I now know.

I guess she got to the point where her morality/ego surpassed her obligation to the fan base, by deleting Hit me with your best shot from her set. It's not a wise game to play when a performer relies on ticket sales for live show, as opposed to album/digital catalogue revenue, as things stand. If artists want to alienate their fan bases by making such stances, be it at their own financial peril.

As a kid, when I first discovered Pat Benatar, it was 1988 and her song "All Fired Up" was all over MTV. I asked my mom if she had any of Pat's other music and she loaned me her copy of the "Best Shots" album where I stumbled upon what would become the song that pretty much saved my life and that song was "Hell Is For Children". At the time, I was being harmed by a neighbor and nobody knew what was happening and that song spoke to me, like there was someone out there who understood what I was going through and clearly voiced all of the pain and hurt that I had. 20-something years later, everything came full circle. My friends took me to a Pat Benatar concert and somehow got backstage passes as well for my 30th birthday, which my friends decided to celebrate in the summer. When it got near the end of the show, I watched as Pat started to give her little speech about the song and how they always played it live in solidarity for victims past and present, I instantly started crying because I knew what song it was! It had been lightly raining for most of the show but for some reason it started raining a bit harder once she started "Hell Is For Children" and once she got to the heavy Rocking part at the end, I was screaming every word with tears in my eyes! We were maybe like 2nd or 3rd row and Pat made eye contact with me and threw a fist in the air my way. When I got to meet her and Neil backstage, I instantly started crying again as I told them the whole story of what had happened to me and how that song both saved my life and became an anthem for me to keep going. Before I left, I got a big hug from Pat, a picture with her and Neil, and my copy of "Precious Time" on vinyl signed by her and Neil with the saying "Survivors are rock stars and you are one"

I Think it’s ridiculous that she won’t sing it anymore. It’s her biggest hit, not my personal favorite Pat Benatar song, but it was the money maker 21:25 for her. There’s too much going on with this MeToo movement and the gun control thing. It’s a song. Simply a song. You don’t have to make a social statement out of it. No one was even entertaining those ideas back in the 80s, when this song came out. It could be an anthem in a sports arena, it can be a break my heart song but I’ll get back up, it can be perceived so many ways. It’s a shame because I’m sure many of her fans are going to her shows hoping to hear this song. Again it’s not my favorite Pat Benatar song.
