Wonderful video as always! The flute forum on Facebook had an adult student ask a question about flutes. They were looking for intermediate flutes, and I really like your flute reviews, complete with the fun mouth drawings, so I referred him to your channel. Something related to the "level up" stuff... My mentor in undergrad and part of my masters had a take on learning to *emote* and play musically. He always said there was more than one way to skin a cat, and that the different ways weren't necessarily wrong, nor was one way specifically better (in general,) but context adds a good parameter for what works and what doesn't. He would always say that you can play the music any way you choose, but however you choose to play the music, you must *sell it to the audience.* They might not subscribe to the same idea of how to play that piece of music, but if you make sure your musical point of view is backed up with confidence, good technique, and great sound, you can convince even the most stubborn musician to "accept an additional way" to play the music, and possibly could come to respect and prefer that musical rendition over their own. I'm not sure I necessarily agree with only experiment in your private practice sessions. I think having both an active audience to discuss the experimenting, as well as nudging the student to "suck it up" and become more confident, instead of staying away from the possible (probable) musical discourse with the teacher on what worked and what didn't.

As an accomplished flute student who has competed and won a high chair in the "State competitions" back in my high school days, I want to share how I felt when I leveled up. My teacher always coached me on the basics (rhythm, tone, articulation) but when she found that I was already at max level, she would introduce "phrasing, musicality, and tone color". For example, our Allstate etudes in Texas can be quite boring or random but as the student levels up, we learn how to make it more exciting, ex: start super soft here and grow towards this phrase or add a super purple Trevor Wye tone at this line to sing out and then a yellow tone to fade a passage. I was taught that most teachers (judges) don't just want to hear the basics (perfect notes and etc), they want to hear the uniqueness in a flute player's capabilities. I call the leveling up period as the "icing on the cake" part ^-^. Just wanted to share.

4 minutes in and already this is an amazing video. Joanna, if you had never made a KZitem channel I doubt I would've made it to where I am today on the flute (of course I've still got a long road ahead, but you've bumped up my knowledge and sped me up a little more on my journey)

I'm living with my grandma... she's really cool, but she doesn't understand that sometimes you have to sound weird that it can sound great in the end... so i can never find the mood for trying all those things freely because of her comments...

Joanna, you are spot on with your comments. As a senior amateur flutist who still occasionally studies, I find it advantageous to keep my flute at the dinner table so that I could just take it out to practice and experiment on meshing that good long-tone sound within the context of an etude, solo piece, or band part. When much younger I only thought about the corners of my mouth. Now I am becoming aware of so many muscles in the lips and their use in achieving a good, individual sound. I find that playing church hymns helps with experimenting various colors, textures, and line.

Something I always try to keep in mind for myself and communicate to my students is that when making a change to how we play, it will feel weird by definition. It's something we're not used to doing. If the thing we were used to doing were optimal, we wouldn't be here! I also always try to approach things as experiments. Let's try it and see how it works. If it works, great ! If not, well now we know. I find that takes the pressure off and gives students permission to sound bad in the quest to sound good. Especially when learning to be expressive this can be helpful. If we start out knowing that we won't know if something's good until we try it, that gives us permission to try something like we're trying on a new shirt and decide if we like it or not, compare with other options, and pick what we like best without it being personal. Though I agree that private work is still essential.

Hey Joanna, if you haven't decided yet on what Flute you're gonna review this month do you think you could add a Wooden Flutes and Headjoints segment/mini - series to your FCNY Sponsored reviews, I honestly love your reviews the best because of how detailed and in depth you are with your descriptions and explanations, and I'm trying to pick out a wooden flute/headjoint to buy and I would love your take on Wooden Flutes. You explain it so well. For some reason, I feel like I should level up, but when I do I just want to go back down because I feel unprepared to move. I found that from you that it feels like starting from scratch. It's kind of difficult for me to step out of my comfort zone, but I love challenging myself especially when it comes to music. I've learned how to put expression into music on my own as well. It should be something that every musician ought to have in their musical life. My clarinet level right now, in music grade, is probably Grade 4. My tenor sax level is around Grade 4 1/2ish. Even though I've been playing clarinet a lot longer than the saxophone, I have no idea how surpassed the grade of my clarinet playing.

Good insight today. I think that when you learn an etude, you learn lots of things that you are not totally conscious of, probably including various details of embouchure. So, for instance, you may be using, and therefore learning to use, bad high register technique. It takes conscious effort to fix. I sometimes slow an etude down a lot to practice tone, etc.

Have you ever read about Vygotsky's theory of learning and zone of proximal development? It reminded me so much about that theoretical aspect of education... where the teacher will be a mediator and facilitator to something a level up. So your student is oriented by you in that kind of problem but then students will be able to solve problems of that nature. I believe it works really well in music lessons.

When I first started at New World ( That’s the school I went to for the last two years of my undergrad), I felt intimidated and unfortunately, I carried this feeling of not being worthy of being at the school mostly because of people’s negative opinions about me as a musician. Anyone who has taught me ( not just flute teachers) will know that I’m the kind of person who has a hard time giving myself credit. These last two years I will admit that I’ve doubted myself quite a bit but now that I’m starting my masters, I have to recognize that I have done well for myself despite being mostly self-taught😃❤️🎼

What would you say classes as intermediate? I've been playing for about 5 years and I am currently grade 6. I am still using my first and only flute and I feel like it is under performing but I dont know if its just that my playing is bad... I have tried a couple flutes in store but they were pretty much the same as my current flute and I wanted to try something different. When I look online at "step-up" or "intermediate" flutes, they are often selling open holed flutes and solid silver flutes. When I booked an appointment with the flute store to test some out, he kind of indirectly refused to let me try them because it "isn't ideal" for my ability. And now I dont know what to look for... I dont know what works best for me. Any advice?

I’m currently going through this at the moment with my instrument the violin. I can play the piece with beautiful intonation and tone but my interpretation of the piece is a bit boring. The last 2 weeks I have been experimenting and even had a lesson just purely on musicality which wasn’t awkward for me because my teacher gave me a great deal of skills to implement into my own practice. Apparently all I need to do is really exaggerate dynamics and I’ll be done with my pieces and level up to the next stage or new music to do it all over again. 😊

What should I do if I feel like I’m completely stuck in the puberty stage of learning an instrument. . I’m a sophomore in HS and I have been playing as long as the seniors at my school. I’ve never had private lessons (my other school started band early) and my flute is a cheap beginner flute. I feel like I’m stuck in a place where I’m maxed out. My flute isn’t able to keep up with my growth. I also can’t afford lessons. I feel like I can’t play dynamic or use tone color because of my low quality flute and because I have never had private instructions.
