the reason you say don't run a script reminds me of something that bugs the crap out me about the average user. for some reason they assume when they buy a computer or install a program they assume it comes already configured or optimized for best performance. they don't want to learn about those things so they can make the most out of what they purchased and thereby get their money's worth. then when something gets in they have no idea why or how or what to do about it. it's alot like buying a car an never ever giving it a tune up the entire time they own it. a good example is they will download a free antivirus while having no idea how to configure it's firewall they just assume it comes pre configured! then when something gets in all the sudden they are claiming it's a bad product and broke their pc when it was actually their own fault. if i bought a ferrari i wouldn't necessarily want to push it beyond it's specs but i would at least want to know how to get it to perform at those specs. another thing users do is download free tools to remove malware but they don't repair the files the malware damaged. they just assume the malware is gone now it should work same as it did before it got infected.

This is no different than how Linux access for permission too. And for extra protection and smarty you can create an Admin UserID and a Standard UserID on Windows so it prompts for an AdminID every time. How did you miss this?
@SpaceCadet4Jesus

Biased is why they missed this. Thank you for your accuracy Mr. Linux user. There are actually two higher accounts in Windows, System and Installer. System is the true "root" account. For normal users, you don't need to use Terminal anymore than having to use command line with Windows. Most Linux distribution now comes with many commonly used program or utilities. Open/Libre Office have the same basic features of MS Office, except for Visual Basic (PowerPoint is still better than Impress through). GNU is as powerful as Photoshop and just as hard to learn :-P. Linux Mint with Cinnamon/Mate DE is the most similar to and Windows user friendly distribution. You can even burn the ISO to a USB drive, boot and try it out without changing anything on your PC.

@@SpaceCadet4Jesus The major Linux distributions comes with package managers and repositories where vetted prepackaged programs are available for installation. Programs in repository are a bit older but can be updated automatically by the update manager. If the program you want is in the repository, you can install using the package manager and does not require Terminal. If program is not in the repository and not available for download in the proper format (.deb for Debian), then you will either have to use Terminal to add the repository or compile from source. Adding repository is pretty straight forward, once you learn the proper commands. Compiling from source is a bit more complicated but most comes with instructions. For people who are interested in using Linux, I would first find what programs they needed and find if program or similar is available for that distribution and install the programs for them, or recommend that they stay with Windows. Having new user mucking around with Terminal is not good, same as with Windows user and CMD. Even with experience with Windows CMD, I use Terminal sparingly and only with clear tutorials and O/S backed up for the first few years.

Well, Porky. Linux is trying to make it where most programs are available. Its called Wine. However due to windows having direct x under complete lock down, it's almost impossible to make all common programs available. Not to mention most common programs have common variants to choose from on any OS anyway, so no-go on that for anyone. As far as a distro that's right for you, the best thing to do in this case is to find a bare-bones distro with a GUI (not a command line) and simply add only the programs you use. An example of a distro like this is DSL. (Damn small Linux). Its literally about 55 mb, uses next to no resources so if you have a modern machine it will behave faster than lightning. I dont remember what is preinstalled, but if memory serves, its just the basic neccessities. However if this sounds like too much of a chore, then it looks like you are stuck using one of the Big 2 and you get to enjoy all your choices made for you like a good little sheep.

@@schaddly I have to disagree with you on the use of Wine or a bare bone distro for a new user. Currently, Wine is a hit or miss proposition with a lot of software and is definitely not for a new user, just too frustrating. I stopped using Wine for this reason and run Windows programs in VM. Considering most new users will be coming from Windows, distro with Mate or Cinnamon DE (Mint or Ubuntu) would be best. These DE are designed to be similar to Windows desktop with similar work flow and with most commonly used programs installed (browser, media player, graphic, productivity etc.) allowing the new user to use the Linux right away and minimize the learning curve. Once they have more experience, then the user can get deeper into the O/S if they want to. Ubuntu and Ubuntu based distro also have a large user base with many online tutorials for help if needed.

@ If only all the operations would be as simple as just a few clicks of the mouse and for some programs/games you don't need endless workarounds... I recently tried Linux to see how easy or difficult the transition would be , me being a total noob when it comes to Linux. I play and stream Age of Empires II Definitive Edition which by default is designed to work only in Windows 10 and newer , I was able to run it in Windows 7/8/Server2016/Server2019 but not in Linux. I searched for more info/tutorials and found a few claimed they could run it in Linux after enabling Proton for gaming (Proton 4.11 more exactly) , tried myself the game installed but no go , after the splashing screen it just freeze , tried few things after searching this problem , none worked. I tried Ubuntu Game Pack which comes with Linux preinstalled and other gaming platforms ready to go (I tought this would be easier since it hass all the needed programs/tools) and nope , no luck. Then I tried LinuxFX 10 , same nope no go , then Linux Mint 20 , same nope no go. After losing few days I simply gave up , I repeat I am just a noob , probably for people experienced enough it is easier but not for everybody , some people keep saying Linux is easy , nope is not as easy as few clicks in Windows, I also record videos using Shadow Play , but that is not installing in Linux and there are a few more . So same like driving when they say the shortest road to a destination is the one that the drives knows , the safest and easiest OS is the one you're used to and know that programs/games used are WORKING , not trying to guess if it does. I don't like what Windows became after Windows 7 , but stop with Linux is easier and everything is working fine , no it's not. The title is correct though , you didn't say Linux is 100% safer , only that is safer than Windows which is true , but boy you need a lot more knowledge to make shit work on it.

It's an reward for effort thing. If you can hack windows then you will put effort into doing that because almost everyone uses it. Hmm... this video has not been your best one IMO. It uses 2003 rhetoric that just doesn't hold anymore. 1.) The argument with the "Windows gives you straigh admin priviliges" just does not hold since Windows Vista. That's why the UAC is asking for your permissions. It's elevating the process to admin privs once you accept, not any sooner. 2.) If you really want to separate concerns that much, you can always go ahead and create an admin user and demote your own to just user level. Then the UAC will ask for a User Principal that has access to elevate priviliges of the process. In fact, that's how any regular Active Directory setup is done. 3.) Microsoft has now included a Store application. If you really want to make sure you only get reviewed applications, download your applications from there. Or use something like Chocolatey. 4.) Linux vulnerabilities not as bad as Windows? Linux is just the number one platform for servcies exposed on the net - including online banking. Don't you think big corporations are "big fish"? 5.) If we should have learned anything from WannaCry and Petya, then that elevated privs are not required to hurt you very deeply by corrupting and/or stealing your files. Just with the privileges your user has RIGHT NOW. 6.) If you download an executable on Linux, you can just as well run it. 7.) Snake oil software does not really help you in securing your system. It's OK as some line of defense, especially for new computer users, but other than that it can have more risks then doing anything good. Taking the current strategy for MITM of secure connections so they can be "scanned" by popular software as an example. 8.) A well crafted SE attack does not need a gullible person at the other end. To clarify: I'm by far no Windows fan (anymore) but I personally feel that short sighted videos like this undersell Windows because of XP and prior.

Linux user for over 10 years here and the only reason I can see using Windows is for Windows only software. For most users, who mostly use the browser and maybe some office software, O/S (Windows or Linux) doesn't really matter and Linux is just more robust/easier to repair when something happened. As far as malware goes, as long as you install the updates, you are fairly safe. Most that can happened is the browser get infected, which is easily fixed. I run an antivirus on my main rig but only to find Windows malware, so I don't pass malware to Windows users. Linux has come a long way since I started using it, now it is easier to install, maintain, comes with multimedia/productivity software pre-installed and will work with just about any hardware (just have to be careful with printers). Best part with Linux is as long as you stick to a desktop environment, changing distribution/version is relatively painless. Unlike Windows where with each version, you need to get use to a new DE (remembered the Metro BS with Win8?). I remembered giving my 8 years old cousin a Win7 laptop 10 years ago and Windows need to be reinstalled every other week, loaded Ubuntu (Gnome DE) and didn't have to mess with it for years.

"Most that can happened is the browser gets infected", wish you would have told that to a new client who could not get his Ubuntu 14.9? to boot. Undecipherable error message on boot up. I'm only a PC tech (Windows). Tried various confusing solutions from the internet, but ended up replacing the boot sector process by hand. Then later, same client calls, saying the desktop shows but the terminal will not come up with any keystrokes and mouse right clicks are not sending command to the OS or the OS refuses to work and not giving any error messages. I had to completely rebuild the OS from scratch, his packages (which he didn't know which ones were installed until he would try to use the system over a week), and his data stored in ext3 or ext4 formatted drive. I tried latest Ubuntu 16.xx, but his packages would not install or work on it and there was NO new package upgrade, so back to version 14.9? With no Linux experience, I got it done, but I never want to do it again, it was like running through brick walls at every step.

@@SpaceCadet4Jesus Failure to boot is most likely a bios/UEFI issue or damaged boot loader, there are instructions online on how to repair Ubuntu boot loader with the Ubuntu live USB. Can't really tell what the issue is with the Terminal or O/S, mouse, k/b errors. You can do a lot of diagnostic with a live USB to verify if it is a hardware or software problem. My kit always have a live USB for this purpose. Britec09 have some great tutorials on how to create diagnostic USB drives. Software in repositories do change (added, updated, deprecated etc.) over time and available software do change from version to version in the same distribution. So if it is a required software, you just have to stay with the supported version. Ubuntu LTS distribution is supported for 5 years and should still be relatively safe after support ended for a while, you just won't get any software/security updates. For most users, I do recommended LTS version for this reason.

Open source software is just look at by thousands of developers worldwide. They can easily detect if you try to put something malicious in the code. Whereas at small companies with closed, proprietary code it could go unnoticed. Hence it's risky to download apps outside of the app store, which is also true on Macs and Windows as they both have app stores as well. But Windows in particular has a culture of people just searching Google to find whatever app they want. But as for the OS... Apple or Microsoft could intentionally install unethical code that only they know about. Outside coders simply can't see it other than trying to detect what the OS is doing by looking at data transmission behavior perhaps. Whereas when Ubuntu tried installing just the slightest questionable code, a lot of people jumped ship over to Linux Mint.

Then went to Mac OSX for 20 years and to be honest i never missed Windows. Its a different experience and i tend to play other games. Like ID games. Now i'm back to Windows (my girlfriends laptop) I don't play games anymore. Just use it for FB, KZitem, Email and simple things like that. And thats fine too.

I have been using Linux for my main operating system for more than two decades, although I do scan for security flaws and viruses, I have never found one or had any kind of virus related problem. I do have windows computers also for work specific software and for kids gaming systems etc, as time goes on windows seems to be more and more secure but there really isn't a defacto software management system built into windows that I can install new apps without having concerns, Package Management is the strongest part of Linux security.

In my experience, no. When it was introduced and popped up for many things, yes. That constant popup changed somewhere in Windows 7 and I've seen very little if anyone turn it off for anything other than preference.

Windows UAC is pretty much the same thing as Sudo privileges in Linux systems. It's actually somewhat more powerful as you can ajust how severely you want the system to prompt you based on different security preferences. Before creating a video you should really get your facts correct, as misinformation is never a good thing. The only true security advantage Linux and MacOS have are that those users install the majority of their programs through repositories or the AppStore, so they are '"trusted" programs that the system can authenticate. Windows users have more variety with programs, so they are more used to downloading programs using the web browser. Which unfortunately is where the majority of malicious code comes from. Always remember, the majority of hacks happen because of user errors, such as trojans or weak passwords. Very rarely do systems get hacked based on security holes within the actual system. This is why Windows gets hacked more often due to the habits of Windows users downloading their programs through the browser. And don't forget 80% of Computer users are Windows users, which means it's a much, much bigger target.

Is that why I keeping getting phone calls for years from "Android support" wanting to tell me my account has been hacked or it has a virus? I knew it! No....wait.....that's Apple Support. Seems the scammers know that iPhone/MAC users are the most gullible and have the biggest potential payout. Sorry dude, even the scammers have proved you wrong about Android. As for Windows, it's because it has the biggest desktop market share for tens of years.

linux mint is an absolutely an awful option • Not a recommended Linux distro due to providing little to no benefit over using an Ubuntu flavor and being generally more broken than Ubuntu and its flavors. • Has been known to mix Ubuntu and Debian packages, resulting in a FrankenDebian. • Does not keep the kernel up to date. Mint 19.3 has not updated their kernel since Fri, 25 Oct 2019 13:05:51 GMT. This makes Linux Mint extremely unsecure. • Has been known to have issues with upgrading between releases. • Website has been hacked twice; one of these times resulted in malware being distributed in Linux Mint's ISOs. If you like what mint looks like just use (Ubuntu Mate)

Wrong. First off, the current version of Linux Mint is 20 not 19.3 and it is using the same kernel as Ubuntu 20.04 which is kernel 5.4. I am currently using Ubuntu 20.04.1 right now but I personally believe Linux Mint is a wonderful distro if not better since it includes so many more tools than Ubuntu. I have never had an issue with LM so it is always my fallback OS. Also, LM just like Ubuntu gets all security updates so I don't know what you are talking about. You do realize that Ubuntu is based off of Debian and LM is based off of Ubuntu. Seems like you need to do some more learning before posting.

I agree, Linux (Mint) is safer than Windows, not least of all because the user controls what updates are installed and when.....What I don't like is that, if Linux is installed alongside Windows on the same disc, file types common to both OSs can be seen (and accessed) by either OS even if a password is needed to boot either OS....The solution I've used, if somewhat fragile, is to replace the optical drive with a caddie containing a second drive......I say fragile because, in spite of the KZitem instructions (which don't work), I have to toggle between UEFI and BIOS to boot either OS....Bit of a pain, but at least the two OSs are fully isolated from each other. I use RUFUS to create a bootable pendrives but it doesn't resolve the booting issue..
@Bally1001
4 жыл бұрын
@gilkesisking Yes, that's right.....But.....For some reason, Rufus won't (according to my experience) respond to selecting the UEFI option when creating a bootable pendrive.
