In Hinduism, Lord Yama is often depicted as a tall man with a long beard and carrying a rope in one hand. He is also known as the king of the underworld, Yamaraj. The word Yama is actually derived from the Sanskrit word “yam”, meaning to restrain or control. As such, Lord Yama is considered to be the guardian of moral law and justice. He is also responsible for guiding departed souls through the underworld.
