I heard a great explanation of "why Lutheran" a few years ago while talking to a pastor we were interviewing to be our pastor and the question came up....why Lutheran?....his answer was, "because we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if". Stop and think about that for a minute...we don't have anything we have to do to be saved. No works, no alter calls, no giving ourselves over, we just have to have belief, and be baptized, that's it. Our sins have been washed away by the blood of Christ, He came to earth, died for us, was raised from the grave. That's it, that's all we need. Ask for forgiveness, and you will be forgiven.

"...because we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if" ... we just have to have belief, and be baptized". That sounds a whole lot like there is an "if". How about "we just have to have belief" full stop? A lot of denominations do NOT see water baptism as salvific. Just faith. Lutherans - at least the hardcore Lutherans - tell parents that they must take their infants to infant baptism because that's the way the infant is saved. When pressed on the scriptural problems they give all kinds of ifs and buts and of course the good old "remember; it's God's work - not ours. It's a gift!". But parents still have to do it, they say. And when parents do it, the infant gets new life, they say. Non-Lutheran bible believers on the other hand go with the clear message of scripture: That whosoever believe in Him shall not perish, but have everlasting life (regardsless of any kind of so-called "sacraments" like infant baptism). When you read Luther and prominent Lutherans you realize that Luther wasn't very consistently "sola fide" and "sola scriptura" in his views. He still had a lot of tradition and sacramentalism in his thinking, and today it's right there in Lutheranism. It's just being toned down with nice rhetoric like "we are the only religion in the world that does not have an "if"".

@@JohnPeters-qz2zbbut the Bible literally says that Baptism and the Lord Supper are a part of salvation. Read John 6. “So Jesus said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in yourselves. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day. For My flesh is true food, and My blood is true drink. He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him. As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who eats Me, he also will live because of Me.” John 6:53-57 And Baptism is frequently linked with the forgiveness of sins in scripture. I’m not trying to discredit what you’re saying at all. Without belief and faith, we have absolutely nothing. But this idea that many low Church protestants have that sacraments don’t really do any thing just isn’t scriptural. They weren’t inventions of the Roman Catholic Church. It’s right there in scripture alongside the essentially of faith and belief. You can’t just hone in on one and ignore the others. Anyways just a thought, not trying to argue. God bless

I too was raised Catholic, but my father was Lutheran (Augustiana Synod). While I consider myself agnostic (too long a story to go into here) I am currently attending the same ELCA church he did when we first moved to Kalamazoo. I feel this is a way of getting in touch with my heritage and honoring my father. He once confided to me that he regretted signing the agreement that the Catholic Church required him to sign when he married my mother that all of us children would be raised Catholic and that he would not interfere with that. That was about the only time he ever discussed his faith with me. I find a lot of similarities between the two faiths. However, I had to laugh a couple of Sundays ago when they honored St. Teresa of Avila during the intercessory prayer as a "reformer". That she was indeed, but her idea of reform and Luther's were two different things! Both of them must be rolling in their graves. In fact, I jokingly asked the organist (a long-time friend), "Are you sure this is a Lutheran church? Because it sure feels Catholic to me!"

I´m pentecostal (methodist) from Chile, but I really love the Lutheran church, and I appreciate the tradition, I believe we are 1 church, and continuing from the apostles to today, I don´t like the "philosophy that some evangelicals and most pentecostal have that all "catholic things" are bad things", I think they focus too much on not being like roman catholic even when that means changing our traditions to "new ones". I love ancient music, liturgy, robes, even episcopacy. Sadly in my city, there isn´t any Lutheran church, and the 2 Lutheran denominations in chile are very "contemporary style" so I prefer to be at my current church where at least we maintain many traditions from Methodist, like having bishops, annual conferences (assemblies), singing hymns, not signing much contemporary music, women, and men dressing formal, etc. and even when are pentecostal are not charismatic, It´s Classical pentecostal, I could say it´s an episcopal methodist church that accepts the gifts of the Spirit, but maintain much doctrine and order in the services and administration. God bless my Lutheran siblings, and of course my all of my other evangelical siblings (in Chile we say "evangelicos" to all Protestantism). God bless the church :)

If we were indeed tabula rasa beings, I might be Lutheran. Whenever your bishops and ours figure out their differences and come into full communion with each other, which I believe is God's will for the Church, you might just see me at a Lutheran Church. We're already in the same boat with Grace Alone, God Alone. After all, I have a soft spot in my heart for the Lutheran impulse, and a Catholic (universal) Church must have varied rites for stylistic choices. David danced into Jerusalem (ritualistic style) but it was his wife who sinned by judging his different form of worship.

Sooo question: The term “Lutheran” was originally a derogatory term used against Luther by Johann Maier von Eck in the Leipzig debate of 1519. Obviously Luther didn’t like the term because he didn’t want a church named after him but to keep church unity (initially) and preferred, as you mentioned, the term “Evangelical.” So if Luther himself didn’t like the term, why is this church still called the “Lutheran” church? Why “Lutheran”?

Hi Dr Cooper. The Sola Scriptura argument, that we know the Christian faith by deriving it immediately from the words of Scripture is incorrect both because the Christian faith predates the completed canon of Scripture in the year 392 and because Christ himself never instructed us to learn the Christian faith in this way. Jesus came to found a Church not write a book. The only church with an apostolic succession back to the Apostles is the Catholic Church. When Christ commanded that the faith be passed on to posterity he specifically enjoined apostolic authority and liturgical tradition as the proper modes of its transmission. (Matthew 28; Luke 22:19; Luke 10:16) He says not a word about relying on the Bible alone. Find me a quote in the Bible where Jesus says, “just read my book”.

Gospel-centered? Not sure about that. Some years ago, I was helping a Lutheran seminarian who needed help writing her research papers. And what about the teachings about afterlife -- heaven and hell? That is in neither the Gospels nor in Paul. Quote from the web "Lutherans believe that anyone who hasn't accepted Jesus as his savior and who doesn't believe that the Lord saved them from their sins will go to hell. In hell, a person suffers eternal damnation in the presence of the Devil. .Lutherans believe that once in hell, a person spends eternity there." There is no Biblical basis for this. Lutherans teach that water baptism is necessary for salvation which is a false gospel of works. We are saved by God's grace through faith in Jesus Christ only. Please read Ephesians 2:1-10 - "8 For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; 9 not as a result of works, so that no one may boast." This is from their Augsburg Confession: 1 Of Baptism they teach that it is necessary 2 to salvation, and that through Baptism is offered the grace of God, and that children are to be baptized who, being offered to God through Baptism are received into God’s grace. Sounds like he is also teaching the Lord's Supper and worship are also means of grace. I would run from the Lutheran faith.

No, salvation by works is the thing Luther railed against. He didn't like the book of James bc it doesn't emphasize grace alone as much as Paul did. In the Lutheran Church, it seems Jesus has to share the limelight with Martin Luther. Why do Lutherans follow and make a big deal over Luther and not solely Jesus Christ? Martin Luther is an imperfect sinner like the rest of humanity, with the exception of Jesus. He is no more spiritual, special, holy, or worthy of God's love and salvation than me or anyone else. Jesus died for me, not Luther. I'm sure he was a great guy, loved Jesus, and was a wise man, but he's just a man. It seems odd to elevate a man so much. I don't see the wisdom in following anyone other than Jesus Christ and him alone. Jesus shouldn't have to share the limelight with any human. I'm just curious and seeking understanding. ☺

Gary Pierce I’d start by learning more about Martin Luther as a historical figure, but in this case specifically the reason Luther is so important to Lutherans is the same reason Muhammad is so important to Muslims. They aren’t a different religion, but they have their own beliefs that he defined, and claiming someone’s ideology means dealing with them as a person. Not to mention, most people who seek to learn about Lutherans already know about Jesus.

As a practicing LCMS Lutheran, I can tell you definitively that most Lutherans know very little about Martin Luther, and that is fine with them because Lutheranism is not about Luther. It is about returning the focus of Christianity back to Jesus' death for all our sins on the cross and the promise of salvation for all who believe that. God's blessing to you.

Each person has different reasons for denying the Bible. Some don't believe Jesus when he says baptism is for all believers, not only for articulate believers. Some don't believe Jesus when he plainly says that infants can believe and that the infants we bring to him are owners of the Kingdom. It's just as important to reveal the faithless unbelief of evangelicals who deny infant baptism as to defend infant baptism. _Why do Christians baptize?_ [Jesus] said to them, “Go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation. Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved, but whoever does not believe will be condemned.” Mark 16:15-16 _Why do Christians baptize infants?_ Infants are included in “the whole creation.” _But we are only to baptize “whoever believes”! Can infants believe?_ Indeed, they can. John the Baptist had and demonstrated faith from his mother’s womb. “And of the Holy Spirit he shall be filled even from the womb of his mother. ... And it happened that as [Elizabeth] heard Mary’s greeting, the child leapt in her womb.” Luke 1:15, 41. A psalmist had faith from birth. “For You are my hope, O Lord GOD; You are my trust from my youth. I have *relied upon you from my birth;* You are He who took me out of my mother’s womb.” Psalm 71:5-6.Timothy had faith in the Gospel from infancy. “From infancy you have known the holy writings.” 2 Timothy 3:15.David had faith from birth. “You have made me to trust while on the breasts of my mother. I have relied on you since birth; from the time I came out of my mother’s womb you have been my God.” Psalm 22:9.David and Jesus do not find it incredible that nursing infants can praise God in faith. “And Jesus said to them, “Yes. Have you never read,‘ Out of the mouth of babies and nursing infants You have perfected praise’?” Matthew 21:16. _But surely those infants were special cases. How can infants believe today?_ Jesus commands us not to hinder those who wish to bring their infants to him. In fact, he calls them to himself, and says not that they are brought, but that they come to him. “Now they were bringing even infants to him that he might lay his hands on them and pray. And when the disciples saw it, they rebuked them. But when Jesus saw this, he was indignant with [the disciples]. Jesus called them to himself, saying, ‘Let the children come to me, and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God. Truly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God like a child shall not enter it.’ And he took them in his arms and blessed them, laying his hands on them.” Mt 19:13-15; Lk 18:15-17; Mk 10:13-16

Now as a Lutheran I feel cheated, I feel betrayed and I feel I am a Lutheran in name only. We no longer hear the Gospel as written in the Bible. It seems like anything goes.
