Apple has to be very careful turning the desktop into a giant cell phone. Microsoft bungled when trying this with Windows 8 and alienated users so much that W10 reverted to the familiar taskbar and icons. OSX has built up 20 years worth of user happiness which is very valuable goodwill that should be embraced in Big Sur, not abandoned.
@virmler
4 жыл бұрын
I think that Apple has a different position than Microsoft did back then. Windows users did/do not have a universe of similar products coming out of one hand. Therefore Apple users have a much larger affinity to these kind of changes. Sure, Apple shouldn’t overdo it but they have a much better basis to start from with users who are more likely to accept these changes.

@@ricochet4674 Well, I think it is more than that. I don’t see a large gap between iPad with trackpad and a Mac. @Thoths_Pen

If we are being fair to the vision that Microsoft had, they destroyed the universal platform. They also destroyed Windows on mobile. They abandoned WP 7 with WP8 and then again for WP8.1. They left no backward compatibility for developers and no easy development path for transitioning apps from one platform to another. Something else that hindered Microsoft is that they should have used their overwhelming market share and enterprise entrenchment to announce the death of x86 and 32 bit. They should have pushed UWP and left x86 behind. They should have announced a date a few years down the road and a path to help individuals, corporations, and developers make the transition. That way many apps be developed for one platform and easily ported to the mobile and back to the desktop again. I have never been a huge fan of Windows but I loved windows 10 mobile, even more than my iPhone and iOS. And I really loved the MS band. I could have moved to a windows 10 platform for these devices and the online windows sync services could have slowly lured me from the Mac ecosystem. I love my Mac and it’s ecosystem but if MS had really pushed the innovation, especially in the mobile space with seamless integration in the desktop workspace- it would have been great.
@encinobalboa
4 жыл бұрын
@@Thoths_Pen A lot to unpack, I had to read your post twice. MS has a tricky business strategy ahead. They have to protect x86 market share and guard against Linux taking market share. MS will never abandon x86. X86 has achieved critical mass with equipment manufacturers, software developers and most importantly business market share. MS greatest threat has to be that Apple and Linux are trying to bring the free OS paradigm to x86. Apple's decision to make MacOS free is in stark contrast to Window's licensing and activation and is a big reason that MacOS has the loyal and rabid following that Windows can never attain. No doubt, the Linux model contributed to Apple's bold decision. Linux is a viable and free alternative that with a little development could replace Windows and eat into MS OS revenue stream. Did MS miss an opportunity with UWP? Probably not. W10 still dominates business and gaming markets which for unknown reasons are not on Apple's radar. As long as MS enjoys a healthy OS revenue stream, they will stick with x86.

I just heard that new desktop PC/Mac sales are up 12%, which is incredible. Seems with all the remote work, people are finding out that their mobile devices are able to cut it as a work horse and are buying desktops to get the work done. Just an observation. All this problems momentarily disappeared if the MacBook is rebooted, but will eventually start popping again like hiccups. When I was at Apple in the late 1990s I saw an internal video showing a holographic “Mac” that used a Siri-like assistant. This was projected on a table. What is happening today is a result of ideas thought up and invented 20 and 30 years ago. LED screens were the big topic in the late ‘90s industry mags. Jobs and everyone else knew these devices were coming and that a UNIX like OS, combined with “compliant” technologies would lead to what we are getting today. Apple Silicon will be a revolution in workstation/desktop/laptop/mobile design. You can take that to the bank.

My question is : what will happen to the processors of the iMac Pro and Mac Pro ? Will it have a Xeon processor or what will replace it?
@oliviamatthew4516
4 жыл бұрын
Good question. Apple chips certainly have the oomph to replace Xeons, and new supercomputers, such as the top ranked Fugaku machine, use similar ARM chips. So I guess they’ll go to Apple’s new processors, too. Probably slower, not just for engineering time, but also because pro apps tend to change more slowly. When the Pro machines eventually come out, they should be impressive. 5nm will allow a lot more power in the same space as Intel’s big, hot 14nm Xeons.

Apple was so reluctant to include mouse support in iOS for fear of cannibalizing MacBooks, but eventually they (sort of) came around. Android had mouse support from the beginning. You can even use a Bluetooth mouse with an Android phone if you want to (not that you would want to). Chrome OS now allows Android apps to run on Chromebooks. Microsoft and its partners have created lots of interesting 2-in-1 devices...tablets running full Windows 10 and laptops with touch screens and all sorts of creative designs. If Microsoft had financially enticed more developers to release apps for its Windows Store (which was also a big reason why Windows Phone died), then they could be more dominant today in the mobile space. But that was a strategic blunder so monumental that it has done irreversible damage to the company. It was a crucial moment in time that they can never get back, and they have conceded mobile largely to Google and Apple.

When put to charge, apple logo appears then goes away then comes back and goes away again and this keeps on repeating until I remove from charging I have no idea what to do, tried resetting/hard reset the watch by pressing power button and digital crown together for 10-15 seconds Still no apple logo shows up I don’t know what to do! Tried contacting apple, they say if its hardware problem I will have to replace the whole watch because apple watches are unrepairable. Please let me know if you have a solution, I am in real need for help. Thank you in advance!

Logan Hanssler you might not be early man. Arm based macs are in their infancy. I’m sure they’ll be great when they come out, but they’ll be realllllly great in like five years when they really understand what they’re doing and what their consumers want and need. Just like how the iPhone five was leagues ahead of the original iPhone. Your new MacBook Pro will serve you well for many years my guy :)

Logan Hanssler yea man I’m still running pretty intense logic sessions on my 2015 mbp, so I wouldn’t stress my dude :) they’re usually pretty good at future proofing their devices for a good while. Few stinkers here and there but if you needed a new computer I don’t know that waiting for an arm Mac would have yielded wildly different results. Not at this point in time at least.

MacOS was getting kinda stale when I was using it on my old MacBook pro years ago. I couldn't upgrade to anything newer than El Capitan on the MacBook Pro I was using until the thing just flat out died [it was 8 years old at least]. I've held off on buying a mac since then because of price. I am genuinely exited to see what an ARM based Mac will do and what Big Sur will be like on the new Macs.
@MorbidGod391

I think your missing the Big Picture. Apple won’t merge the iPadOS and MacOS. But they will be sister OS’s. And we will see a new “TouchBook” where - like the Surface Book - is a laptop that will run MacOS. However, the screen can come off and then it runs iPadOS. Which is why MacOS has touch friendly designs. Eventually, some Macs will have touch screens. But it’s not meant as a primary way of interfacing with the laptop.
