The ‘African Roots’ part is very important to those who say that Thriller is only for « white people » some black people quickly forget how black rooted that album is and how important it is. It broke barriers the way no other album ever did, including Off the Wall.

Some black people should be proud of what Thriller achieved for them, breaking all barriers, it did bigger and better than Off the Wall that is still truly great but was limited in terms of reach, it mostly impacted the North America and UK. It’s with Thriller he became a worldwide phenomenon, the first black artist with a global impact and it helped Off the Wall to sell better.

I love “The Girl Is Mine”. The chemistry between MJ and Paul goes a bit further before the song's recording. They already knew each other a bit and MJ paid him back in appearing on two more songs for Paul's _Pipes Of Peace_ a year after Thriller.

He captured the Zeitgeist- first as an adult with Don’t Stop Till You Get Enough and Rock with You- then again with the McCartney duets for the mid 80’s. Now, far as I understand, Soft Rock is what sold during the early 80’s, particulary the recession of 1982. The Girl Is Mine was an ode to that old Motown/Abbey Road kind of sound. It was a cross-pollination of sounds and genres. The song was McCartney first number one R&B single, and because of this, Say Say Say also did well on the heels of the forthcoming Thriller singles and the Thriller hype

When you look at The Girl Is Mine from another perspective, it's about a woman who is sleeping with two men at the same time. And the lyrics "If you can't feed your baby, then don't have a baby. Don't think maybe, if you can't feed your baby" from Wanna Be Startin' Something can be interpreted as meaning couples should use birth control if they can't afford to have children. Billie Jean also has similar adult themes. These are very mature topics on what Michael foresaw as being a very successful album, but they were all brilliantly incorporated into their respective tracks so that the songs weren't really *about* those topics, but the messages were there nonetheless.

Wanna Be Startin Somethin should've been the 2nd single. Anytime the opening track has that much heat it has to go 1st or 2nd otherwise it wont do as well as it could've. WBSS would've easily been a #1 hit across the boards around the world. However, by the time it was released as a single it had already been over exposed. I remember getting the Thriller as a christmas gift from my mother 1982. In January 1983, every morning while we were getting ready for work & school, WBSS was always in heavy rotation....billie jean was the 2nd single, but we were listening to WBSS more than Billie Jean...Billie Jean could wait.... same thing with the Jacksons Can You Feel It and MJ's Jam. Each of those 2 songs could've charted better had they been released as the 2nd single. You've got to get those opening heat tracks out the way 1st or 2nd because they're gonna be overexposed by the time they're released as singles.

Timing is everything. With Billie Jean released in 1982, Michael would’ve fought for chart space with Hall & Oates anyways. Maneater was the number one song while The Girl sat at number 2 for three weeks. Motown 25 was Michael’s strategy- a chance to promote his 2nd single, using his first first televised performance since before Off The Wall.

I think Quincy was the person of authority needed to help MJ stick to deadlines and goals in order to get his projects done efficiently. I recall looking at other content creators doing documentaries on MJ's career and his time working on Dangerous showed that without a Quincy-like figure to help MJ stay focused; he tended to recorded WAY too many songs and second-guess himself. Don't get me wrong, Q was wrong about several things as well. Can you imagine Thriller without the Billie Jean track?! Thankfully, he was around to suggest a rock song like Beat It.

Oh my goodness for the millionth time...lol the line "If you can't feed your baby, then don't have a baby" is NOT about an actual baby or any type of political statement on abortion.. WBSS is about starting trouble, stirring up rumors. He's saying if you can't sustain a rumor, then don't start one. Don't get the ball rolling because it'll grow into something beyond your control. It fits with the theme of the song and has always been very obvious to me. Why do people keep thinking it's literally about a baby 😭 That makes no sense in the context of the song.
