Andrew Patrick Nelson loves Westerns. He studies them. As Associate Professor at University of Utah, he guides students through the badlands full of robbers and coyotes, revealing the props and scenery of the fiction at play.
As Andrew points out, any dramatic rendering of the historical Wild West says as much about the year it was made as it does the era it strives to capture.
He’s written extensively about these complexities, including the two journals he founded: “The Popular West” and “Reel West.” He also co-hosts a podcast dedicated to Westerns titled “How the West Was 'Cast.”
We discuss Westerns from every imaginable angle: the influence of John Wayne, the changing landscape of the genre, the layers and complexity of Westerns, the appeal of the imaginary West, the role of video games like Red Dead Redemption, the significance of love in Westerns, the future of the genre, the portrayal of heroes and anti-heroes, and more.
