Also is a momentum based active fund better than momentum Index since the rebalancing is only in 6 months which is a larger timeframe considering the index volatility

Shankar, I am a follower of you from long time. One of your old video you mentioned about momentum funds and you mentioned about lumpsum investment on it. So I invested lumpsum in one of the nifty 200 momentum 30 fund on oct23, 2023 now till today it given 35.16% return on my investment. Before this fund I am a big fan of nifty next50 where I used to get around 17% return. Thank you for educating me on momentum funds otherwise I never came to know about it. I used to buy multiyear breakout stocks with good volume but now I am not doing any research directly putting money on momentum funds. Your really different from other content makers. I really like to appreciate your work. One day I will meet you personally and show my gratitude. Thanks shankar.

Thank you for this video. I am a rather conservative investor and honestly I wouldn’t have considered a momentum strategy earlier. But after having watched your video, I now think that it would be prudent to start with around 4% to 5% allocation of my portfolio to momentum and increase it in the next 2-3 years if it yields good results. I have a full time job so I would have to look for a mutual fund or a smallcase to start with. I am thinking of starting with Motilal Oswal Nifty 200 Momentum 30 Index Fund. I have watched some of your videos and I have always learnt something. Great stuff and please keep it up 😊.

Hi Shankar, What do you think about the following allocation for the long term? -- Mainly I'm thinking right of this is not correct. I'm considering both the following funds as one fund only: with the idea of having Active as multi-cap and adding a bit more of flexi cap, just to add a little bit more balance in case general allocation of having 50% in small and mid-cap doesn't perform in a bear market but having a flexi cap fund which is managed aggressively from quant just to transfer bit more to performing market cap. I am not sure if this thinking is correct, but my calculations are giving me the following ratios for the last five years => Quant Active Fund = 30% => Quant Flexi Fund = 25% Mostly Large Cap Focused Flexi Cap: => Parag Parikh Flexi Cap Fund = 25% Special Allocation (20%) => Quant Momentum Fund = 10% => Quant Value Fund = 10% Expected Portfolio CAGR: 29.38% (Not expecting this, expecting 15% in long run but with consistency) Portfolio Beta: Approximately 0.91 Portfolio Alpha: 9.90

Shankar, thank you for spreading knowledge with your clear and no-frills delivery style. Right now I have 2 mutual funds running-one flexicap and other in small cap. Further to this video of yours, would like to add a momentum fund but need guidance on the following options: 1. Have two separate MFs-one largecap actively managed and one pure midcap momentum fund (NIFTY MIDCAP 150 Momentum 50) 2. A NIFTY 200 Momentum 30 fund that covers both large and mid categories. Which one would you suggest? In addition to these, if I were to invest in a SWP plan with a lumpsum of say 50 L, will a hybrid fund be more advisable than a NIFTY 50 index fund? Any inputs will be of great help

Hi Shankar, Can you share a comparision between active and passive momentum funds. Along with smallcase which is the best. Also SIP vs Lumpsum in Momentum fund. Really like your videos.
@shankarnath
7 ай бұрын
Hello Priyank ji 1. The comparison between active & passive momentum is there in the video itself - pls have a watch. 2. Which smallcase (I'm assuming you mean within momentum) is difficult to answer. Smallcases are closed communities i.e. we don't know much about the portfolio, sectors, weights etc. Its the smallcase owner's proprietary logic so it's difficult to compare. I connected with the smallcase team on giving me access but since these are propreitary, they couldn't offer me one -- which is understandable & I'm glad they respected the owner's rights 3. SIP vs lumpsum in momentum fund is not clear. May I know what you need here? If it's returns please use valueresearchonline.com or moneycontrol.com or advisorkhoj.com for the same. They have a lumpsum and SIP returns calculator there

I think it's better to go with a momentum based mutual fund compared to a momentum Smallcase, as there would high short term capital gains with small case as it will have frequent churning... Please let me know if my thought process is correct..
@shankarnath

I've never tried a momentum smallcase so I'll not know but two points: 1. I don't choose investments based on taxes, I do it on the post-tax returns (are you expecting the same returns in the case of index fund & smallcase?) 2. The difference between STCG and LTCG is 5%. If essentially rebalancing offers 5+% returns then the differential will be made up

@@shankarnath though the difference between STCG and LTCG is 5%, the major difference comes with number of times the stocks are changed during the year.. majority of the momentum Smallcases have weekly or atleast monthly rebalance.. Pls let me know if my understanding is incorrect..

@shankarnath, I have been following your videos from many years. I really appreciate your efforts and insight on the content you provide and I really see a value watching to your videos. Thank you. My question: I am able to save some money from my salary which I am investing in to mutual funds through a SIP and I stay in rented house and I am the only earning member. Here my query is I have dream to buy a house but with the same SIP amount I need to plan for my retirement, child’s education, emergency fund etc. If I take a home loan I can pay the EMI through existing house rent partially and remaining amount I have to pay through my SIP amount which could affect my retirement plan and child education. Moreover I need to spend all my existing entire savings as a down payment and I am worried will I become financially in-secured. Please help me plan how to buy a house efficiently. Thanks in advance for your help 🙏🏼

Hi Shankar. Nice video. Can you let me know how it is possible to get the data of stock before 6 months as I want to verify myself also once. Thanks!
@shankarnath
2 ай бұрын
Thanks. 1.You can use screener.in where they publish "6-month return". So if the 6M return is 10% and today's stock price is 100, then please use .. 100/(1+10%) .. to arrive at the stock price 6 months prior. 2. If you want to extract the stock price directly, then please use Google Finance. There are many tutorials on the Internet on how to extract stock price on previous dates.

Hello Saurabh, my study shows momentum markets do well in bull markets and poorly in bear markets. Markets being at an all-time high in not indicative of bull or bear markets

I have build positions in momemntum fund for last 6 months and will continue till election results or fed rate cut which are trigger points for another rally . Suppose both these points are triggered within 6 months and then markets starts correcting . What is your exit strategy for momentum funds . Do you partial books the profits in down markets and rotate in value funds ?

I prefer using a 50:50 with re: momentum and value. The historical datastudy I did shows a rolling return of 15.3% across tenures which I find pretty acceptable. For more details, please watch: kzitem.info/news/bejne/wo9-uIiGjXalgaA

Sir, a huge fan of how you describe in-depth insights into investment strategies. As someone who is generally bullish, I'm interested in exploring momentum investing to enhance returns while managing risks effectively. Could you please shed some light on how a momentum strategy is managed if the market turns bearish? Is momentum investing through MF suitable for the long term, or should it be limited to shorter horizons like 6 months to 1 year, especially during bearish market phases? and How invested NAVs through MF are managed by AUMs during bearish markets! Thank you for your insights.
@shankarnath

Thank you. 1. Pls have a detailed discussion on this with your financial advisor since momentum will be a part of your overall strategy & it won't be looked at in isolation. In a bear market, most equity instruments tends downwards & so will momentum. 2. There is no generic view on this. You're comfort will be key. Kindly examine the data presented in the video & see if you are comfortable with it for the short or long term 3. Momentum index funds follow a documented strategy so they will be fully invested during bear markets; active funds might follow a different strategy (like reducing exposure if there are no clear opportunities or during bear markets) but since Samco & Quant are very new to this and haven't seen a bear market, we'll have to wait to understand the AMC's response.

Hi Shankar, excellent video with simple strategy backed by data. I am watching from Bangladesh. As you mentioned its performed poorly in the bear or side ways market. So how would you consider adopting the technology when we don’t know or predict how the broad market will perform in next 3 or 6 months? Any insights?

Thank you very much, glad you liked this video. It's difficult to be 100% sure but there are always some markers. For example -- if the valuations are heavy (e.g. 26 or 27 PE for Nifty 50). Or if the corporate earnings are coming down i.e. Nifty EPS .. then these are indicators that the stock market is likely to go down. One can see this more clearly with sectoral indices. e.g. IT indices have not kept pace because the Nifty IT earnings growth has been quite flat (just 4%) in the past 1 year. This weighs in on the index performance.

Hello. Both are thematic funds .. i.e. they are based on a theme/strategy. Quantamental is based on growth, value & quality factors .. while the Momentum Fund is based on the momentum factor.
