The popular song "Moon Over Miami" was written in 1935 by Tin Pan Alley songwriters Joe Burke and Edgar Leslie. Working in New York City they evoked the romance of a moonlit tropical night without ever coming to Miami.
South Florida’s battering by the “hurricane of the century” that September may have lead the composers to use Miami in the title. The song's music was used in the 1941 film Moon Over Miami, but the film was shot primarily in California with the actors never coming to Florida. Despite this bizarre history, the song is still the musical icon for Miami and Miami Beach.
