Oi, Ikenna. Instead of telling you my favorite language learning method, I’m giving you a suggestion. Idk if you’ll actually ever read this, but if you do, pls consider creating a discord server where enthusiastic “fluency hunters” can interact with each other, advise the curious on languages they know and have knowledgeable ppl teach them whatever linguistic info they seek. I sincerely hope you get this and I also might write this to you again and again as other future videos are posted. Until then, I wish you nothing but the best from beautiful Brazil.

Hey Ikenna i find your videos very informative, yet entertaining, and you bring things to the table that other people have just rumored about, yet are afraid to bring up to the table when it comes to language learning. A program I've found very helpful is called MIA, i don't know if you've heard about it, it's got to do with this guy call MattvsJapan and Yogapants. And their goal is to try to learn a language through watching TV shows in the native media without having to break your wallet. I'm using it to learn Japanese right now, and it seems to be working its magic, because the more you listen to the language the easier it is to understand the gist of it. The beginning stages of the kanji etc, is only for the Japanese and Chinese learner, aka (languages that don't use the western alphabet), but the rest of it can work with any language. The best part most content you can find on KZitem very easily. Right now they're also developing add-ons for anki that make learning the language easier as well once you get into the juicy parts of it. Its still in its working stages but its totally free to find online @massimmersionapproach.com. Even if you don't care about the method, just the concepts that they bring to the table, are good guidelines for when you learn languages. Making it effective, and truly worth while for those that truly want to achieve fluency in any language for free. P.S. i don't mean to be their advertiser or anything but i think they might be revolutionizing some of the ineffective parts of learning languages in school(which we all tend to forget about after a month of summer break.)

My favourite language apps are Busuu and Drops. Both very effective and super fun. One time on Busuu I planned to only study 15 mins, ended up studying 1 hour longer. An RPG where the quests you take consist of slowly more complex sentences / tasks. Everything in the beginning is written very simply, with mostly "yes" or "no" options. But things would gradually become more complex as you go through the game. Spell words correctly to land attacks, spell them slightly off and they do half their damage, wrong word entirely and you miss, and idk I'm bored and writing whatever came to mind

A language learning RPG would be amazing where you would have to learn words and phrases both written and spoken to interact with the world, survive and shape it. Throw in an element of sandbox and open world and there comes the motivation as you race off to explore. Someone did try to make one, it's on Steam, but sadly it's too prescriptive, simplistic and linear to hold attention. I guess it would never happen the way we would like though, due to the sheer cost of gaming development vs their potential income. Still, we can live in hope and dream = )

The Avatar: The Last Airbender intro alone was enough to earn my “like”. Haha. About resources I’ve used; the most effective method for vocabulary acquisition, learning to think in the language, and developing pronunciation was Rosetta Stone. Not super fun but not a complete snoozefest either. But I was given it for free; I’m not sure it’d be worth the steep cost because it was relatively short and doesn’t teach grammar. Learning the basics early on in a foreign language is immensely fun on its own using just about any resources; I use a lot of KZitem, personally. For Spanish audio, I’d recommend the Notes in Spanish podcast, the Lengalia podcast, or, if you have an elementary level only starting into intermediate territory, the Unlimited Spanish podcast (but that one does get boring and never really advances to higher levels. He speaks very clearly and understandably though. A very fun lower intermediate series you can find on KZitem is Extr@, which has versions for Spanish, (British) English, German, and a few others. It’s actually quite entertaining and very helpful for learning but at about 13 episodes (in all but the English version) it’s a bit too short. I watched the series many times and memorized many of the lines. Español in Episodios is fantastic and blends an engaging story with educational lessons in a very real-feeling and emotional way. The characters truly seem like real people, the Spanish spoken in the teacher-student setting (the majority of each episode) is clear & understandable, and the teacher’s quite attractive which helps too :p For Esperanto I very highly recommend the kernpunkto podcast online. Awesome. For many languages I’d recommend playing Minecraft (especially helpful when playing with bilingual friends) if you’re a gamer. You can change the language of everything in the game and since you do a ton of reading in your inventory and have to communicate with friends about many useful, real-world words and concepts, it’s super helpful to develop vocabulary and develop conversational fluency with friends. If you play on Java Edition, they even have Esperanto support, The most helpful app for me in all my years of learning languages has been Tandem: a free language exchange app where I’ve met many people around the world including my current best friend in México who I’ve now met in person (he stayed with me for a week here in ‘Murica). Helping each other out through langexchange is immensely beneficial and languages are a great way to build friendships or potentially even find love if you have better luck in that area than me XD It’s super encouraging to get positive feedback from natives when you’re stuck in your own country like me. I’ve only played around with the free version, but so far I love LingoDeer, which is basically a much better version of Duolingo with special focus on Asian languages but it’s great for others as well. It’s helped my Mandarin quite a bit. It’s basically Duolingo if Duolingo were good ;P Nah, but Duolingo has been slowly improving and is finally decent for some languages (for beginner basics) but isn’t enough alone. They do have the largest selection of languages I know of, including endangered & artificial languages. I recommend looking up videos you’re interested in on KZitem IN your target language once you start understanding it. And kill 2 birds with one stone!! For languages I’m learning basic things in, I watch educational videos in languages I already understand. Or watching a movie in one language you’re learning with subtitles in another you’re learning helps too. Maximize efficiency. Make LISTS of your vocabulary and things you’re learning, and move them to an ever-growing list of things you know once you’re really comfortable with using them frequently. This has helped my motivation a lot, by showing me how far I’ve come. Those are my best tips.

For french imo 6.5/10: effectiveness and fun, it's pretty fun and addictive and the effectiveness is pretty good. I like how they quickly just start with the lesson instead of getting/forcing me to read some notes or something because I really hate reading and learning. However at the end I still read their notes, usually after a few lessons. I don't really hate reading I just hate reading something that I don't know about. When I read something where they say parler= speak, I would wanna go like "ooh yeah yeah I remember that, I've used that before but I'm a bit confuse though, oooh so there is different conjugation parle, parles, parlent and parlons, ooh so that's why" And not "Ooh parler= speak ok let me try to remember that.... ooh no I forgot" So basically I like to know the basics first and then read about the more complex part (probably one of the same reasons why I like to rewatch movies and see what I missed instead of watching a new movie)

It was practically the only thing I used and thus not a really deep enough dive into the language to be anywhere near fuent, BUT what I DID end up discovering in Croatia was that my mastery of numbers in Croatian, as well as a basic understanfing of general pronunciation porved to be very useful. My English and German were useful, but probably on an even level with practicing numbers in Pimsleur.

If you truly want to learn a language and actually know how to speak it, you can't only use Duolingo. Not that it's not effective, but it alone is not enough for you to deeply be able to understand or speak the language. I, for instance, use Duolingo to enhance my vocabulary, refresh my past, basic knowledge and just generally improve my speaking skills. Other than that, you HAVE to either get a textbook and learn from it or learn it by searching your own topics on KZitem or Google. For example, look up grammar lessons (grammar is very important) and/or search for reading comprehensions, learn how to form sentences and THEN start using Duolingo. And yes, I know, that is sometimes boring but that's just how you would effectively learn a language. Duolingo will teach you the basic, must-know words and sentences but if you want to become fluent, you have to write on a notebook and buy a textbook, etc. You have to teach yourself. You can also use Duolingo to ask questions to other people since most of the time people will reply. What are your thoughts on programs?

I've heard of people that have learned languages from games like fornite or empire games. I think the reason why there is not an engaging app like you said is maybe because creators have created them expecifically to learn X language. In contrast, In real life, language acquisition accurs for the sake of communicating. In other words, we're naturally engaged in communicating not in learning how to enounce words. Love that topic Ikenna

My dream language app or game or program or whatever would be like watching tv but the only way to get through the scene would be to fully translate the speech through context and if you exit the app via anything but a phone call or phone dying you’d miss the rest of the episode. It would be like solving a language mystery. Certainly this is a rough idea, like obviously at the beginning of the thing you wouldn’t know much so you could take a placement test or something then based on that score it would determine how much you would need to translate initially and it would get harder every time you logged on or every time you get three scenes correct in a row or something like that. Love the videos, you’re the best!!

Michel (Michael?) Thomas is my favourite language learning program so far. I'm currently using it to learn French. The old guy teaches you so much in such a short amount of time, and he's pretty funny which makes it enjoyable. You're also learning with 2 other people who are brand new to the language, so you don't feel like an idiot for messing up. Like a protein shake for your brain, chocolate flavoured.

The big weakness I find with Michel Thomas is the non native speakers. A learner is imitating non native speakers. Like a photocopy of a copy of a copy. The quality suffers. I would recommend imitating native speakers first, then use something like Michel Thomas.

Now I currently use LingoDeer (I downloaded it before you had to pay) and it's better in my opinion but even with the app I feel like most of the words aren't sticking to my brain as it should, But yeah self studying is definitely effective so I am doing that. *If anyone knows any language learning apps that uses Korean please comment it so I can check it out*

Imo duolingo can be somehow effective if you learn the language you're serious in. I learned Hiragana and Katakana on the 1st and 2nd day and after the 4th day upon memorizing both hiragana and katakana, I started using lingodeer and duolingo to study Japanese and after 2 weeks now I learned almost 200 kanji and some grammars from both. I study Japanese for 2~5 hour every day including Saturday and Sunday and my reading skill in Japanese improved a lot and was better than my 1st time reading hiragana and katakana sentences sheet.

I am currently learning Japanese, I started with Duolingo and it sucked, it was nothing but guessing random kanji and phrases with absolutely no explanation for how to read the kanji (only lessons are for reading hiragana) or proper pronunciation (speaks very fast like your already fluent and leaves you going "um, what did they say?") Started using pimsleur instead and saw a huge difference not only did it explain exactly what I was learning it also gave lessons on proper pronunciation, which was a huge help, I also ordered a book called "remembering the kanji" which has been a big help in learning how to read, write and remember kanji symbols. Those 2 combined together and I'm learning Japanese very quickly. I do still use Duolingo but it's not too learn the language anymore, instead It's more like I use it for learning random phrases to be stored into my core memory which I can be simply reminded of later and gives me just a little extra boost of random knowledge Looking forward to the day when I can turn on an anime, remove the subtitles and understand everything that they say

I would love a Language game that is a heavily story driven, and starts you off as an English speaker that moves to a country where they don't speak the language. Through the friends you meet, the products you buy at the shops, the classes you take at School/University you start to hear and learn the language of that country. For the first week, you have what is basically a tutorial where a bilingual friend shows you around and helps you with some of the basics. after that you can call him for help occasionally but you are mostly on your own. The Story driven aspect of this game will help with the emotional connection to the words you are learning. Having these emotional connections with a character you have created and going on a path that you have hand picked for this character would be so great. RPG elements onto a choose your own adventure. Like Sims x Mass Effect X Walking Dead games (Telltale games RIP)

Personally i find gradual exposure of language most effective for me. For example when introducing a language through speaking by speaking english but saying the occasional spanish words mixed in with it, a program can sub these words and the brain automatically recognises the difference and can remember its context use much easier this way. And by gradually turning from one language to another by incorporating more grammar and words into it, it can become very fun and easy to learn. So speaking to somebody with gradual transitioning seems to have a lasting effect on how I remember how to use certain languages.

I'm currently learning Hebrew, I use a combination of Drops & Duolingo mobile + desktop. Drops I find is very good for vocab flashcards but it lacks the masculine and feminine versions that hebrew has. Also not very good with plurals and tenses. Hence I would only really use it as a vocab flashcard app. Duolingo desktop has helped me a lot with their little tip lessons and encourages me to practice daily. I do find though that I need to research words and things afterwords because they dont always explain properly what you practice. BUT I dont only use those, those are just my fun way of keeping up and learning. I supplement my learning with tv shows, youtube channels and music. I find it extremely satisfying to translate hebrew music and I find that I learn very well that way. My mother is also fluent and my father has some speaking ability and understand, so I got lucky in terms of practice there. In terms of an app that I think would be fun for language learning, is something like sims. OH MY SOUL!! Sims is SO MUCH FUN! I also feel like sims immitates real life and people, which is perfect for language and culture. Maybe it could be like Virtual Life where you walk around complete quests and speak to people other characters in your target language. If you dont understand you can ask the character. The intro of the game will teach you how to ask in your target language. Then maybe there other online players also playing this quest type game and you could help each other, but only speaking your target language. I think it could be really revolutionary and ground breaking if something like that could work. Maybe once you've reached a certain level you can become a teacher in the game :'D

For all those Minecrafters out there wanting to learn a language, go to settings and at the bottom there should be a tab called ‘Language’ then you should be able to click your desired language and play minecraft, then when you play creative or survival you can see the name of the object in that language. It’s obviously not effective but it’s fun and you can learn some new random words I guess Ex. I changed my language to dutch (nederlands) and I’ve learned new words like Scaffolding=Steiger Feather=Veer Glass=Glas etc.
