I moved to medellin alone 8 months , at first it got super lonely , made a lot of bad decisions , mixed with the wrong crowd in desperation to create a new circle. After about 6 months I finally found purpose , got deep in the culture and started doing non gringo things , started using spanish more Oh I also left poblado and started living like a colombian

I travelled to Medellin alone a few weeks ago and stayed in non tourist neighborhoods. It was great! Living like a tourist gets old in a day or two for me. My Spanish is limited but I worked it and got by. Medellin reminds me of NYC 40 years ago!

"I also left Poblado and started living like a Colombian" - you are a smart man! not many people come to the realization that life is much better this way haha this is exactly what I do!

Yeah I don't understand why people come here - live here for 5 years, never learn Spanish and don't have any Colombian friends lol

@@AKJoel How can you not make friends in Colombia! The people there are so open and warm in my opinion. And when you do find locals that speak English it's great because they are generally very hip people. If the surf was better Colombia would be a perfect place for me.

I would not recommend most people moving to Colombia without a very good reason. My colombian girlfriend of 5 years had my child ....so I retired at 56 and moved to Medellin to help raise my child. And live with my child's mother. If I didn't have a family here i would never have stayed living in Colombia full time. So having a serious relationship with someone here is the most important thing.....especially if it is with your own biological child.

No worries - I like to get deep into this stuff sometimes to really help people with issues they may face - because that's exactly what I had to go through as well.

You bros ever lived in Puerto Escondido? Life and death surf can get boring too but you can push the envelope.. I’m in Philippines now for months and I’m feeling it too. I’ve decided to learn Tagalog and stop drinking

Move to a non-gringo barrio , only go to places that colombians hang out at, learn the language, join a club or do an activity you are passionate about. For me that was mountain biking and sk8boarding. FIrst 6 months were tough as they always are but now have a nice core group of local friends. Most colombians are poor so you'll be doing activities that are different but more engaging and fun ( also free )

AK is right - as usual. I think it is necessary to add: that the digital nomad life is a game for the elite. You have to be really organised, have eyes in the back of your head, and have an idea for your life. You have to clean up your sandbox at home in order to fly further out into the world. Colombia is a great test of life - it is an absolutely beautiful country, but it does not tolerate mistakes. You are definitely right - work, home, and duties: especially in Medellin, which has a super high standard of living - it is not a village in the Philippines or an island in Thailand. Greetings this time from Geneva !!!

I spent 29 days in Medellin. It's pretty close to the Philippines and Thailand in terms of standard of living. Also, city of eternal spring? It was hot and sticky the entire time. city of eternal summer is a more accurate description. Spring in most places with four seasons basically means in dressing in jeans and t-shirt and maybe even a light jacket and feeling cool, spring typically 50 to 70 degrees F. Medellin was hot af.

When did you come? In my first 1.5 years in Medellin the weather was great, but just the last 6 months have been irregularly hot - they tell me it's el nino phenomenon or something.

Decent list and tips. I saw similar things when I went to University in Hawaii. Usually after a semester many people would decide to go back home. Luckily I had college to focus on, a steady workplace, and got into spearfishing. Obviously I also had the advantage of classmates as well. Great job guys.

the answer for #1 is so incredibly simple it's ridiculous.. just like Andrew said.. hobbies! whatever your thing is..go find a place to do it. baring anything really esoteric pretty much any activities that you enjoy partaking in back in the states exists here.. and often times it's even more concentrated and focused. for me it's skateboarding, and i've made some incredibly deep connections through just bringing my board, and my little grill to the bowl and having a cook out (every friday at ciudad del rio for anyone interested haha) my second piece of advice would be to not invest a ton of time in people that are 'just visiting'. focus on making local connections with people that actually live here.. expats or paisas. i have found that paisas are a little indifferent to people that are just visiting for a few weeks and will absolutely help them and befriend them but won't invest time in developing that relationship on a deeper level..and for good reasons.
@AKJoel

Yeah I didn't wanna sound too harsh but I never hang out with people who are just visiting lol I only invest time in people who live here (and that speak or are invested in learning Spanish)
