Hi Thorn, Gard down here in South Florida. I have been running a coven for 17 years, and when I first started I out together a whole curriculum starting with the year and day Outer Court training all the way through 2nd degree. Yeah, that didn't exactly work out like I expected as the years rolled by, lol. Ultimately now I just pick and choose and pull from my pot of experiences and knowledge and teach it to my students, obviously separating OC from IC!!

Witch N The Working Thanks for sharing! I’m always curious what other covenleaders put in their curricula! But yeah, that’s been my experience too! Maybe it’s just about what we value, or how our personalities inform our leadership.

@@drawingKenaz you said it perfectly when you mentioned that our students are not all at the same level, so it makes it difficult some times to try and regulate a specific teaching structure

An experienced friend in our lineage had always emphasized a firm curriculum to avoid the "firehose" approach of always training based on people's emotional reactions - of students and teachers. He appreciates that structure encourages balance. I can definitely see his perspective, knowing his background. Gard, your post makes me laugh :) there is the planned route, and there is the path you take, hahaha. Myb preference is to have a structured plan, and then be responsive/adjust. I think that the unique ways each person goes about their learning and experience, and being able to join them on the ride, is what keeps me at it. They have no idea how much I learn from them.

In my humble opinion the coven needs to be able to work in harmony within circle.that means using the same symbolic systems.the same elemental energy's ect. So a set program of basics for newbies to the coven is valuable for the effective magical harmony. I agree that above the basic level of working effectively within the coven ,your path is your own. The individual interests passions and talents are more valuable to the group than a rigid course of study ,Better to have a group of witches who are really good at different things than a group who are mediocre at everything

From a post secondary educational stand point there's a fundamental difference between andragogy and pedagogy that is rarely discussed.

I love this. As a solitary practitioner I really enjoy Wiccan book club. In college we had a group of us who would read a book over 6 weeks. To meet up we'd grab some wine & talk through our impressions. All of us were different paths & had different backgrounds to look through the material. Not really a curriculum, but definitely fun

Hi Thorn, I am not part of a coven but wanted to toss in my two cents worth. With the easy availability of reading material around now and so many people reading as much as they can get their hands on, I believe it is may be better to join a study group/book club where a group reads the same material and discusses. In this way each person can share the same information whether it be their first exposure of the material or a revisit. You are wise beyond your years my friend.

I appreciate the exploration of this topic. I’ve received a few long reading lists and over time, realized that they are sometimes used as the only teaching tool. Now, I conscientiously strive for a balance between cognitive competency and practical skill competency. Thanks for the video!

This is genius! I really needed to hear what you had to say. I am a bookworm and study witchcraft/occult/esoteric from a purely academic perspective. But I realize I am missing out on some deeper learning by not DOING anything. It gave me an "Ah ha!" moment to be sure. Thank you!

Wow, I never even considered people who have limited literacy. I'm totally with you that a good leader in a coven would consider the individual who wants to learn, but has limitations. I'm so happy I found your channel - I completely agree with so many of your opinions on your videos that I've watched so far. I'm not in a coven; I'm trying to learn as much as I can on my own. I haven't found a coven near me, although I would like to.

Very good video,I think covenmates should definitely read about their tradition, especially if they are in that kind of coven like you mentioned Gards reading Gardner or whatever but also reading about the kinds Of things ppl need to know that they will obviously be practicing and having A basic knowledge and understanding of the skills and liturgy etc.. that will be incorporated. But practicing is important ,thus being in A coven to begin with.

It's funny because you don't have a required reading list, but now a lot of covens have your book on their required reading list 😆

Generally, it seems as though the lean towards book work is probably caused by a lack of every day familiarity with an apprenticeship system, which Wicca seems to lend itself better to.

I agree with Thorn. Plus at a certain level you know what works for you. I love tarot hate palmistry, would rather use essential oils on a candle than grinding herbs into wax and making my own candles. You should have the low magick tools down before entering a group. If shows you're not in it for a fad or phase. And all authors are only sharing what they know at that time thus you need to read what you need to know at that time.

I think reading is important but so is the whole trial and error.... Learning by doing is and should be the important thing.

So question. I’m a recently initiated Gard (within the last six months). My HPS was trained in the UK, if that matters and we are in Canada. I had a shit ton of reading and research before I got initiated, along with other training. If every coven has a different way of handling training, how is the tradition the same everywhere? I’ve already seen large differences between UK and US traditions. I can understand seekers having different skill levels and maybe some people can skip past a certain subject in a curriculum, but should everyone have the same base?

Heather C The short answer is that it’s not! Every coven is autonomous, and a great deal of variety can exist from one to the next. It would be worth having a conversation with your HPS/HP about what they consider core, and how that impacts their relationships with other covens/lines. My (American) line has central rites and tenets that we view as essential and defining of who and what we are, but I’ve learned not to assume that these are the same for others.

My policy is direct honesty where possible! I’ve put various safeguards in place so they never had cause to go looking (it’s *insane* to me when teachers share Instagram accounts with students-I think it’s totally inappropriate though lots of my colleagues did it). But if they did, I’d be straight with them.

I would love to find a trad coven but am not down with nudity for myself. Are trad covens who work robbed a thing? I am not interested in Cochrane "trad witchcraft" but I know they don't do nekkid time. 😅
