Why do nations fail? Why have some countries risen from the ashes to the heights of prosperity, while others remain wallowing in poverty? According to leading economist Daron Acemoglu the answer is simple: institutions. Particularly the inclusive institutions that stimulate growth, as opposed to extractive institutions that stimulate the monopolisation of resources. But how much of this is true? Together with Acemoglu, Room for discussion will look at the rise of China, a country that doesn’t exactly have inclusive institutions, but has still experienced phenomenal economic growth, and the EU, which arguably does have inclusive institutions, but has experienced near stagnant levels of growth to find the answers.
