A lot of the dialogue in the books is very vague and leaves much open to interpretation. The characters speak like people, with many insinuations and analogies. In comparison, the tv-series dialogue is extremely straightforward, and the characters aren't very interesting at all, owing to the fact they don't act like real people, with their own ambitions and agendas. Unchecked egos. Imagine thinking you have a better story to tell than the ACTUAL story, while using the same title and characters. Then, when nobody who knows the source material likes whatever nonsense you wrote, you go and blame the fans and the only actor and writer who were *actually fans of the source material* and fought for it to be realized on screen. As the cherry on top, you site misogyny as the reason for said actor and writer leaving and the fans not liking the pile of crap you wrote because you happen to be female and they happen to be passionate. Go write your own original franchise. Don't butcher an already beloved one and blame its failure on "toxic male gamers". The audacity...

He made his voice similar to the voice actor from the Witcher games. I see that as respect for someone elses work and for the fans who got a bit more of Geralt than they may have been expecting. I loved it. His only crime is (maybe) to be too passionate about the story and source material, but is that even a crime? The fans got what they wanted from his portrayal of Geralt. Was that not the point? P.S.: Gamer culture is still not really understood by the mass media, in my opinion, and still gets mocked and pushed aside by these old industries (TV and movie). A shame since gamers know the value of a good story (The Last of Us, Uncharted, Soul Reaver, etc.).

Considering the description of the landscape of the writing, I wonder how much of this has been bred out of that. There's so little respect for source material, because there's so little respect to begin with. A group of 12 people are herded in to figure out something in 3 weeks and then one or two remain to write it all out in more detail. With fewer voices, you can end up with one or two people tunnelin gin on their idea despite the protest of others. Stress, limited time and no desire to bargain their position can result in very adversarial interactions.
@LuaanTi

Not just that. The writers get into it to do their stories. Which is fair enough, but if you're hired to write someone else's story... do that, maybe? Of course, it's nothing new. The original Star Trek writers _hated_ sci-fi and wanted to have absolutely nothing to do with sci-fi. They didn't care how the world fits together, because they were in it for writing their little stories. Most of the episodes were just generic stories with blank spaces left out for someone to fill in the technobabble. Mind, that doesn't automatically mean it was all bad - just that it could have been a lot more with writers who actually cared about sci-fi, rather than treating it as a low point in their careers. But of course, Hollywood will Hollywood.
@medea27
Жыл бұрын
@@LuaanTi The irony of Star Trek was that using "generic" storylines actually made it more accessible to non-scifi viewers, and by inserting the Trek characters into familiar tropes it actually enabled viewers to identify with their _personality_ as individuals, rather than getting hung up on their physical appearance. Same with Star Wars... Lucas's wrote a space opera, not a thesis on intergalactic political machinations. The best sci-fi/fantasy takes completely identifiable scenarios that we can picture ourselves in, but giving our imaginations a fantastical overlay... it's why cosplay is so huge in the community. The problem with these Netflix writers is they have seemingly forgotten that this is _entertainment_ - not journalism. Like you said, more interested in their own ideas than delivering a good viewing experience.

@@Pushing_Pixels That's one way of looking at it, provided you believe on blind faith their claim. Another way is that they thought they were bigger than Henry Cavil and when they saw public sentiment was against them they did what Hollywood 's resorted to for the past decade; any show, movie etc where you are losing your audience you just insult your audience as Sexist etc with non-descript "someone familiar with the matter" said Henry did X Y Z but no one will speak out on record beyond "he she said, she said" You are right they don't "have" to provide evidence to outsiders. But if they had any they'd have used it, if nothing else but to turn the fans on him and draw out sympathy to watch Hemsworth and the rest of their ill-fated yet to be released work. Here's the thing though; if you say some stuff about a guy which is completely out of character and can be backed up in no way because they refuse to present evidence/it doesn't exist, then we can equally and just as easily dismiss their claims. We have zero reason to trust the show runners, particularly when it's in their vested interest to pull attention from Henry to themselves in the hope they can keep their show going. And near as I can tell, you are blaming fan backlash against the writers as for why they said bad stuff about Henry, but Henry himself has said and done nothing that we are aware of to warrant it. Whilst it's equally just as much speculation on my part as it is yours on the internal machinations, what I said before is logically consistent with Hollywood and with corporate Netflix; they have a vested interest in tearing him down to ensure their show survives. What's interesting btw is those claims by the writers quickly died down. If it were true, we'd expect more news, not silence, particularly when they were the ones that broke the silence of a "internal dispute" as you put it. In conclusion, I see no reason to believe them, for the reason I've outlined. What's most likely is what's been covered; he refused to veer too far off course from the source material, tried to keep them on track and was either let go of or walked as a result of them not backing down.

The original stories and novels are so freaking amazing. Transcendent, even. They have as much in common with Homer and the unknown author of Beowulf as they do with Tolkien and R.E. Howard, author of the original Conan stories. Seamless continuation of the ancient storytelling tradition for modern sensibilities. it's insane that the showrunner & writers room thought they could just pull shit out of their rear-ends and throw it on screen, and that would somehow make more money than following the original work that's already proven its quality by getting as far as it has, translated into 37 languages and inspiring a well profitable game franchise. They had the golden goose in their hands, and they just cooked it for a single night's dinner. No surprise this put Henry off his appetite. I really enjoyed season 1. I even liked the season 2 premiere episode, as it hit most of the right notes from the original story despite the significant changes. But after that, it just... became something totally else. Missed the whole point of the original tale entirely, to a shocking degree. Even more disappointing than the dropoff in later seasons of Game of Thrones. They at least had the excuse of not having a clear path to follow, having gotten ahead of the original source material. The last of the main Witcher books was written almost a quarter century before the show was made. All they had to do was follow the damn script, and they'd be rolling in the dough, and we'd be reveling in being able to see with our own actual eyes one of the greatest epic tales ever told.

Yeah, I wish Witcher was adapted by the same people that made GoT. They knew they would need 50 years to adapt the books in full, because Martin loves his micro world building, elaborating how life in Westeros treats mister Nobody nr. 124 and it makes the books feel bloated. World building is good, but more and more I felt triggered, shouting: "just get to the point ffs, the supense is killing me" in my head and I eventually dropped the book series after the third book. So in this case, when the showrunners mercilessly cut like half of the dialogue, they managed to make it arguably better. Left just enough world building and made the story feel more coherent. It was minor miracle that they managed to pick and choose what stays so well, to keep the spirit of the source material and it was only possible, because they understood and respected the source material. That can't be said about the showrunners of Witcher imho. They decided to just use established brand for publicity, to ultimately do their own thing, because surely they can do better than Sapkowski. Meanwhile Sapkowski just cashes out the checks and smiles while saying: "do whatever, just keep them coming", because he only cares about his books, not about what some muricans with fat wallets do with the TV rights :D.

The alternative is intentional exclusion so it wouldn't interfere with virtue signaling to the current culture war. The show runners just want to stroke their own creative egos because the material already written means nothing more than a paycheck to them, and that's exactly why they're not qualified to represent let alone "enhance" the original artist's vision. In the books and games, Geralt is an interesting and complex character, but he does tend to portray a lot of behaviours that modern young adults have a distaste for. He sleeps with pretty much anyone who offers lol He doesn't always do the righteous or moral thing, he's gritty, tough, a "get the job done at any cost" kind of guy. A part of his growth throughout the material is that he is put into situations where he must act quickly, but his actions have consequences that force him to reflect and wonder whether or not his "witcher training" is the right code to live by, where exceptions should exist and how he navigates his duty as a witcher vs his ever-evolving personal bias. I think the writers looked at Geralt without delving into 100% of the source material, and so decided "toxic, macho man" was his entire shtick. It's like they hated his character so much they wanted to switch the entire focus from Geralt to the empowered women around him. And while they have their place in the source material, the main story is and always was about Geralt's inner struggle. In my opinion, the show writers chose trendy story lines that flopped instead of doing a good representation of a conflicted white man because it's been done so many times before. But I think Geralt's character was interesting enough to do that good representation and have it still be well received and profitable - they just chose the opposite direction and it didn't work.

This reminds me of the time when John Boyega spoke out against the character assassination of Finn in the Star Wars sequels. He had the courage to call Disney out for merely casting him as the ''token black character'' instead of wanting to give him real screen time and develop his character. He faced a lot of backlash from Hollywood while (from my perspective) fans supported his side. I remember watching an interview in which Boyega talked about how excited he was at first to get the role of Finn and that he had been such a massive Star Wars fan since early childhood. It was devastating to him to learn that the producers and writers never once cared about his role in the Sequels and cast him merely because of his ethnicity. Even Oscar Isaac later confessed that originally, he had begged the writers not to kill off Poe only to come to regret his actions after the third movie, wishing he hadn't been in them. It saddens me to see Henry Cavill go but I think it's exemplary he stood up for himself and the source material even if it resulted in him leaving. I don't expect the show to survive his absence, especially with the direction the writing of season 3 went. _RIP The Witcher_ On a lighter note, if Henry Cavill ever manages to get his way and produce a Warhammer 4k series, I'd watch it in a heartbeat!

The way the books are structured, with time switches all over the place, if youre going to fit that into seven tv series you’d need to write it all - or at least plot it out - before you start filming. Otherwise you’re groping in the dark. It looks like they went groping in the dark, so they stuck filler in all over the place that made a complete mess of the original story. It didnt help that the writers seem to have the skills to write low quality doctor who episodes but not much else. Even now id bet theyre writing episodes only just before filming them. Thats fine if they were writing an original tv series but its a recipe for disaster if youre adapting a much loved original work. Bottom line, the problem is studio budgets - theyre not going to pay writers to map out all seven series before they film them - so the story is going to go wonky while the writers try to guess how to pace the bits theyre writing. It doesnt help that the writers werent particularly good and didnt have a grasp, or love, of the source material. Everyone points to LOTR as the ultimate adaptation of source material but that was written - and filmed - in one big chunk. Its also a shorter and far less complicated story. Only post production was spread out over years.

The direction of the project should have been in the directors hands. The final experience matters more than individual creative interest (like the writers creative interest to write a new story, even if it differs from the source). Ridley Scott disagreed and changed and challenged the writer of blade runner continuously because he was in control of what the overall end experience of the film will be, not weather the writer can have creative exercise. As an artists I can say this is a challenge all creatives face in large productions, which is why Directors have an important role to DIRECT to a vision and end goal that they have. It just so happens that in this instance the writers had more power, or the director just had a different vision. Especially looking at two different directors tugging the blanket their own way while still ultimately delivering poorly written crap, yet obviously distinct from each other - the dumpster fire otherwise known as the Star Wars sequels. I think directors have enough power as is. What there is a lack of is the amount of control we, the viewers, have over the further production efforts of bad products. If a movie is a new release, you won't know if it's crap or not, and if it's hyped up, a lot of people will want to go see it for themselves, resulting in a box office that's not representative of the movie's quality - same with viewership ratings of shows. We really need to find a way to let people legally watch and judge the product en masse and only then decide where their money goes, like an option to donate your ticket or digital copy's price to charity instead of the company behind it.
