There's no such thing as a time when people will finally say 'this looks good enough, no need to keep improving and making better GPUs'. Animated films are produced with much more processing power than the meager GPUs we have for video games, and even though it was an amazing technical feat for its time, do you think that in the year 2017 audiences would have accepted that the new 'Cars 3' came out looking like the original 'Toy Story'? We're nowhere close to 'good enough' in pre-rendered movies and VFX, so we're certainly not even close to good enough in real time applications with consumer level hardware.

Finally, DF finally said it. CPU matters just as much when it comes to games. You could put the best GPU in a console, but if the CPU lags behind, all that potential is squandered. Remember the SEGA Genesis vs SNES. The SNES was superior hardware-wise on almost every level... except CPU. All that "blast processing" was the cool way of saying the Genesis CPU was 3 times faster than the one in the SNES, which came almost 3 years later. Thanks to that CPU power, we had games like Sonic the Hedgehog, Streets of Rage and even near arcade quality ports of some games.

No I don't think so, the whole "console gamers don't care about 60fps" thing is just a lie to cover up the fact the CPU isn't capable of it in open world games. Ps4 pro did attempt to have an option for ps4 visuals with improved framerates which shows they care, it just isn't always possible when the CPU is the bottleneck. The CPUs next gen should be at least decent enough to achieve 60fps. It's crazy that this is still an achievement for consoles because it seems like 60fps from a CPU in the PC space as been child's play for a long time, it's all about >60fps for CPUs now.
@Fake_Blood
7 жыл бұрын
In the 360/ps3 era there was an abundance of cpu power and a lot of stuff ran at 30fps then too. The general public, and that's most people that buy consoles, have no idea about 30/60 fps and they just don't care. At most they'll notice that game A is more fluid than game B.
@crusaderofni

Fake_Blood The problem there was the GPU bottleneck, its just the bottleneck reversed this time for the worse as I would prefer higher end simulations over more pixels on my screen. Downgrading resolution these days is barely noticeable without side by side comparison while low/inconsistent framerate can have crippling effects on people (motion sickness). Too bad the general public doesn't care about this and just wants the flashiest and prettiest thing to happen on their screen, regardless of how much screen tearing and slowdown occurs.

This gen isn't even finished with games being announced such as The Evil Within 2, God of War 4, Death Stranding, Days Gone, Dragon Ball FighterZ, Anthem, Code Vein, Yakuza Kiwami and 6, Spider-Man Ps4, etc. "A handful of games" Please do your damn research before spouting non sense.

zeitGGeist Sony has released their next gen consoles every 6-7 years since the original PlayStation. The PS4 Pro is a mid cycle refresh, but beyond that: PlayStation: Dec 1994 2: March 2000 3: November 2006 4: November 2013 The gap between 3 and 4 has been the longest yet. The PS4 Pro is the only reason that this PlayStation generation is going to get to 6-7 years. I'm guessing an announcement at the end of 2018 to mid 2019, and perhaps a launch date of late 2019 to mid 2020.

As a developer I would say that the main issue with the processor in current-gen consoles is that developers tend to use up the main thread too quickly, which generally distribute and collect multi-threaded operations. This is putting many games into a setting where the first core is limiting the other seven in current gen consoles. Looking at xbox one x we see multi-threaded performance being equivalent with a core i5-2400. But the issue is that as long as game developers focused on content rather than technology (which we usually are), we will see a computational distribution over the cores similar to this: 100%, 75%, 75%, 75%, 75%, 75%, 75%, 75%. Those 75% have the potential of carrying out loads of operations, but is unfortunately being hamstrung by the main-thread trying to keep up with distributing and collecting operations from the other cores. Technology driven studios like Id Software however shows off a different side. Running Doom (2016) in a 1080p60fps setting would be impossible to a lot of other developers. But they manage to do it, due to awesome software engineering.

Mafia II, a game from 2010, has some strong simulation going on, especially for NPC's. I've seen a lot of varied animations, which make up for a realistic and believable world. I wouldn't count Nvidia's specific PhysX software in this case, as it targets the GPU and not the CPU, but was impressive nevertheless. Another example would be F.E.A.R. Very impressive physics for a 2005 game, with lots of particles, lightning that realistically and dynamically casts shadows and strong A.I. Honestly, that A.I. is smarter than anything the current games have to offer. The enemies of F.E.A.R. can catch you off guard by ambushing you, they can surround you, flush you out from behind cover, call for reinforcements or even tactically retreat when outnumbered. For me, the most impressive NPC count is still hold by AC: Unity, which has the merit of being one of the most impressive games ever made, visually speaking.

I've been telling this all the time to my friends! Who cares how pretty it looks when the AI leap is shit! Current generation is a massive mistake! It is hampered by AMD's pathetic steamroller based CPUs. We need better game/physics simulation. Not 4K, not VR, not HDR or some other fancy bollocks. I am perfectly fine with games looking like end of previous console generation as long as the AI/physics is more complex, there are more NPCs who are also smart and there are more things to do in a game. Games are meant to be interactive. We need more, better, smarter interaction with players... not pretty looking movies.

Another thing to take into account would be the fact that the GPU and CPU would share a die, increasing thermals significantly. If we're to assume average (desktop) GPU thermals + current Ryzen thermals (downclocked even) then you could quickly overwhelm the compact console cooling system. This is likely a consideration that goes into determining hardware specs for consoles. The jaguar CPU in the consoles is considered a low power part, likely around 25-30 watts while current CPU's are pushing 75-120 watts. Add to that current GPU's pushing 140 to 240 watts, unless you severely cripple modern hardware, lower power previous gen hardware is a smarter route.

I tell you why it evolved that way: Sony fanboys. Bragging about how resolution is important and how massive difference they can see between 900p and 1080p. That was the focus point last few years of all the internet articles. THE RESOLUTION because they had nothing else to hold on with ps4 at that time. Sony and MS heard that, and thought resolution is easiest to sell so they pump that GPU power in the mid-gen refresh. Thanks sony fanboys, once again you hold back the gaming industry instead of enjoying gaming and let others enjoy it. Fun fact: as soon as MS took over with resolution, offering FEW TIMES bigger pixel count jump between the ps4 pro and xbox one x than ps4 and xbox 360 - the resolution doesn't matter and they can't see the few million pixel difference at all (even though they saw a few thousand pixel difference between the 360 and ps4).

This video should be immortalised. It explains to any uninformed console gamers why PC gaming is (and always will be) at the pinnacle of technology and performance. You could do a similar video on the subject of GPUs and memory/storage technology etc. Another point touched on in the video is the low level API. Normally exclusive to the console world. Now thanks to Vulkan (and to a much lesser extent at the moment DX12) the PC gaming world is slowly starting to see the benefits of a true low level API as well. The future for console gaming is an exciting one if Microsoft and Sony make a next-gen console with Ryzen technology. By that point in time of course, we will already have PC games optimised for Ryzen and GPUs based on Volta and Navi hopefully leveraging the power of Vulkan and hopefully DX12.

I suspect we'll end up gimped on CPU again because of the Zen arch which works naturally in blocks of 4. 6 cores would be a nice sweet spot, but unless the arch is more flexible than they've shown so far that's not an option - you put either 4 or 8 on the die and I suspect 8 will cost too much. Best hope is that they go for a big die and disable a couple of cores to increase yields.

They can even use Bulldozer/FX and get good results if optimized correctly. My first PC was an 8320e and that chip could do most games at 60fps and that's without optimization.

for u console people that dont understand he basically nerfed the CPU and still ran everything on high and over 30 FPS just to give u idea how much horse power PC gaming has like someone said even the 4560 dual core CPU can outperform a console

Anyone that writes “u” is probably wasting their time if it’s followed by “people don’t understand”. You sound like a 10 year old making it through their first 5-paragraph essay.

+zeitGGeist Or maybe it's because this is the internet and using things like "u" is easier to type out than saying "you"? I swear, you come at anyone who makes a point about PC's having horse power and the only thing you can respond too is that this person said "u" instead of "you". You didn't even make an argument. Just shows how pathetic you are and shows how little you know about hardware in general.

I don't really care for the English misspellings as that's never an appropriate argument. I'm all PlayStation, yet I take the point. They need to get solid hardware into next gen.

I bet the #1 developers have said to Microsoft and Sony when talking about the future is better CPU specs, its really the main thing that's has held back these consoles, and the best part judging from PlayStations past I don't think we would will be disappointed ( I use PlayStation because they are still making generations) the leap between each gen is huge for them, my hope is that the PS5 comes with a 10 core CPU clocked at minimum 3.0ghz, the clock speed alone is a huge upgrades compared to any console of today and the extra 2 cores would future proofing and would be a bonus ( judging from PlayStation history, is not that big of a jump compared to some of there previous gen leaps)

I would like to see more realistic physics in realistic-type games. Thus, instead of hit points and programmed reactions, there would be damage based on the exact hit, and reactions relating to that specific damage. That would be nice.

I don't think you can really say that moving to a newer manufacturing node in itself is going to allow them to bump up the clocks like that if they're also moving to much bigger and more power hungry CPU cores at the same time. Let's also not forget that having the GPU on the same die is also going to put a damper on the clocks you might consider using.
@Mr11ESSE111

because Ryzen /amd cpu-s are much cheaper then Intel one and they offer 90-95% of performance of Intel ones with same clocks/cores ...!! If consoles use Intel cpu-s then playstation 4 or xbox one price would be 50% or more higher

costs of what??if you pay 400$ now for PS4 then for PS4 with Intel cpu-s will cost 600-700$ and that would be too expensive and not competitive on market especially vs PC

And you forgot to mention that console makers prefer and will always use APUs to cut cost. Intel's iGPU's are so crappy that no one would want to use it for games. Intel: Very good CPU + the crappiest iGPU = bad gaming performance Amd: decent CPU + very good iGPU = good gaming performance

Nothing will ever come close to the PS4 Pro master race! - PC minions pay more for triple A titles on Steam, console games have better cheaper deals in any other retailer. - PC goblins wait longer to find a match in the biggest multiplayer games like Overwatch and more. - PC peasants have to tweak options before playing, we're about that plug and play life, no tweaking needed. - PC and Xbox critters need to bow their heads for all our almighty PS4 TRIPLE A exclusives not some indie games crap but actual game boundary pushing titles

Thank you someone had to say this. Frame rates and resolution between a PS4 Pro and a high end PC is barely noticeable to the average eye. PC boys need to humble themselves. I stick with Sony because of all the exclusives they carry. PC and XBOX can't even come close to Sony with the Triple A games.

they need it because they can optimise for it much better there's a lot more growing room for the architecture so it'll keep getting better looking like with previous generations instead of maxing out at the start

I don't believe sony will want to be compared to the PC like it is on this generation that's why I don't believe they will continue on the x86 road. Something like an over the top 1GHz 128 core highly custom ARM So it will be supported by most compilers (from C# to C++) it will be design for multithreading (which is essential for interactivity, much more than single thread performance) and with MIMD instruction for heavy vector-matrix math (animation/simulation). I also expect the GPU to be "half standard" like vulkan support but with a lot of very weird allocation extention and maybe raytracing. A great innovation if that kind of thing is true would be to have syncronised CPU core with the GPU for fast communication. So I expect a well known instruction set but nothing like we see in the PC market to avoid comparaison and get experiences impossible in PC for a year or two (enough time to secure a user base)

Newin Cpp 128 core would be expensive no?
@NeWincpp
7 жыл бұрын
that only depend on the Architecture you use. Even if they are not designed to be CPU most GPU have literally hundreds of "core" (yeah that's not really "core" but that's still processing unit that pack the same minimal RISC instruction so the idea is still here...). So design like Epiphany-v (which is a 1024 core ARM available soon) will work. So it depend on what will they choose. The biggest advantage of this design is that you can use your CPU to make GPGPU task if you need it (deep learning, procedural generation, physics) and still have a reasonable latency. The PS3's cell was kind of design like this but there was too much stuff to care about to get good threading design software side and you can't really afford all that engineering when you have to release a game.

Perhaps Moar Cores is the Answer? AI and Simulation workloads can be easily multi-threaded. Also Interesting is Horizon :Zero Dawns approach of pushing more compute to the GPU. Best example is how they use Compute shaders on the GPU to populate foliage instead of the CPU, and some games (not necessarily ZD) offload physics processing to compute shaders. Maybe as devs leverage the GPU for more parallel workloads (AI, Physics) it won't matter as much that the CPU is limited. That being said, the GPU is a pita to write software for. Maybe this won't happen. It'll be great fun watching how the technology develops.
