If it isn't fortified then you don't get any B12 from it. That's fine if you're not a vegan or vegetarian and can get b12 from meat sources, but for those who are fortified is the way to go. Yeah, it is synthetic, but you either get it synthetic or you get it from meat... or you do without either and suffer the health consequences of b12 deficiency. Its a no-brainer.

B12 is a bacterium, not a vitamin as such. It’s present in the soil as well as animal products and people used to get it from this source. Now that the soil has been rendered poor in quality by intensive farming and we tend to wash our cauliflowers more carefully than we used to, soil is no longer an abundant source. But it could be again.

I love nutritional yeast; have used it for years. Unless one is a strict 'vegan' (the need for B12), I would suggest the non-fortified yeast as it's all natural. (Now, off the subject)The one thing I did not like about this interview, however, is how both host and guest 'talked' over one another at the same time. That was very annoying and impolite, yet typical for these types of TV morning shows where everyone's talking at once.

Plant-based doctors do not encourage consumption of fortified nutritional yeast, as we definitely should not consume the added folate. Also, research indicates that their are nearly as many meat-eaters that are B12 defficient or low in B12, as vegetarians and vegans. Everyone should have their B12 level tested every so often, especially as we age.
@KatarinaS.
4 жыл бұрын
I'm aware of this as well because I read and watch a lot of health and nutrition books and programs. So if we're deficient, which is common the older we get, or in the case of vegans, how do we get added B12 if not from synthetic supplements? I occasionally take a sublingual B12 that I bought at Costco, and I do eat meat at least 2x/week, but on the days that I take the B12, I find that I have so much more energy, either I'm deficient or it's just a great energy booster, so I like taking it. How can I get that effect otherwise?
