I think even with everything they had been through emotionally before that moment, they were each finalized in their own decisions, completely opposite of the other and so completely balanced in opposition yet still in synch with each other’s tactics. Even their lightsaber forms were opposites. They’re literally Yin and Yang. They even had an entire war to completely hone their abilities. It was a perfect dual.

@Sajt This is also what I believe. If you watch a jedi fighting a regular, non force sensitive (like droids) the attacksaare a LOT more straightforward. Hacks and slashes, surely is it really flashy or over the top. An example of this is when Obi-Wan literally walks his sabre into a super-droid in the battle on the bridge of Dooku's ship. Nothing special, he just walks his sabre into it, then cuts it in half. It's like this in so many battles, and it only gets flashy against force sensitive or otherwise trained enemies (like Grevious).
@Crystantemum

I like this. To compliment, in some novels the force gives you a feeling of the future when it comes to lightsaber combat. Your senses being so sharp and training so extensive that you can essentially see a lightsaber battle like a chess match and know future moves. With that thought in mind, I like to think its a showing that they're both so skilled they forced each other to redirect course for their next strike multiple times in a row. Essentially, they were flailing their swords around at a distance because one would've died if they continued pressing, then their counter swing ended up doing the same to the other. Then suddenly they're standing still flipping thier sabers around from an offensive opening to a quick defensive transition over and over again until one chooses to break the momentum of the exchange

People over think the light saber battles by comparing to real swordsmanship. Jedi can foresee moves and basically have foresight. The way you beat foresight is by overstimulating the opponent. It’s the reason people like Cad Bane and Mandolorians became notorious Jedi killers.

I mean, faints are a thing in almost every sword play. It's present in both Eastern and Western style swordsmanship. I always assumed they were fainting each other out. Anakin starts to move one way, then Obi-wan starts to move into a block for that. So Anakin tries to move to another and then Obi-wan keeps up.

During some time when I was learning fighting, I took a sword class to wield a scimitar, a dao (both curved swords), and a Khopesh, to help train me to be better at being ambidextrous. The amount of blade flourishes I did in that class would make this one seem like amazing self control.

and it's loosely based on an actual tactic in real life, in which if 2 opponents that are very familiar with each other are dueling, they will do a certain block that is similar (not exactly the same) to what they do in the movie, and it's meant to prepare for an attack at pretty much any angle (if memory serves me right)
@oyblech8671

I've honestly only ever seen people take the piss out of this move (in context, the move itself does look cool). the rest of the fight is absolutely awesome and even has very realistic exchanges but the stupidity of them standing there twirling their swords is among the first things I've noticed on rewatches. it's a move people do with swords, yes, but you do it purely to show off or train your dexterity with the blade. not in an actual fight, especially not such a desperate one where you're emotionally invested and know your opponent is highly competent and out to kill you. I mean in this short move there were two instances for each of them where they had their blade behind their backs while the opponent's one was in front, I bet they hit each other plenty of times on accident while practicing.

It’s a real move in real sword fighting meant to help build momentum in the blade. What’s cool about this scene is that they both chose to do this move at the same time. THATS what’s highlighting the similarity and “kinship” between them.

@@josephallen2672 Well, then, if we're accepting that any and all explanations of what's going on are valid, I think that a light saber has a marshmallow dispenser in it, and you have to swing the saber really fast and wild to shake out a marshmallow. They saw the lava and wanted to toast them campfire style and have one last moment together.
@josephallen2672

@@SpearAndMagicHelmetYT what part of the established lore that Lucas created gives you the hint that marshmallows come from lightsabers? I mean, if you wanna do a silly fan fiction be my guest, but when we’re dealing with fiction we operate with suspended disbelief within the parameters set by the story teller. Those parameters simply need to be consistent to make the world “believable”. If you wanna have marshmallows then you’re breaking consistency of your story and now it’s not a legitimately believable story. It’s just ridiculous for the sake of being ridiculous. Lucas established that Lightsabers have SOME properties that make them act/feel like a physical sword (if not then he wouldn’t have been able to believably direct they’re effect on the story), so to extend this to a simple move that’s grounded in reality isn’t a stretch of the imagination. But you have fun with your s’mores. They’re great on a family camp trip.

I always thought that it was a way to gain strength. Since both of them tried to hit the other with quick swings, they both decided to change strategy and to "charge" a heavy attack, like a tennisman is swinging his racket to serve with full strength. Then they try to repulse the other with the Force. Therefore, I think this sequence allows us to see that Anakin and Obi-Wan are equal in speed, strength and mastery of the Force, implying that Anakin's defeat is due to his ego.

The force also has the ability to try to feel and predict the next attack and where it will come from and use that in things like blocking shots. It is they know each other so well and are so evenly matched they kept reading each others movies and changing their next move to counter it back and forth that they ended up in a sort of holding stalemate.

A better explanation is given in Heinlein's Glory Road, where the main character reminisces about a master he learned swordfighting from; he couldn't even touch the man's blade unless he allowed it. Both Anakin and Obi-Wan are masters at this point. Just because their blades do not touch doesn't mean the move was senseless.

They're not lightsaber dueling, they're playing chess. Each knows the others moves and what options they have to counter each other in a fight. One moves a certain way, they both know what options they have from that move. This means the opponent needs to move to be ready to counter a possible strike. When they make that silly looking maneuver, both are merely repositioning themselves in an attempt to get a favorable avenue of attack which the other can't counter while still maintaining their guard against whatever their opponent can dish out. Much like in a chess game, not every move needs to capture an enemy piece. Not every move of the lightsaber needs to connect with your opponents blade.

I always interpreted it as the both of them rapidly swinging their blades in an attempt to attack any openings. Anakin trying to make enough movement in order to get Obi-Wan distracted and off guard and Obi-Wan doing so in order to be able to quickly defend any attack that came at him and to quickly be countered. Of course they known eachother's moves and so it turned into them wildly swinging until they both thought they had an opening
