Why Open Standards Are Important for the Energy Sector, and How to Progress Them - Alex Thornton, LF Energy; Minh Dupuis, GE Vernova; Savannah Goodman, Google; Nico Rikken, Alliander; Lonneke Driessen, Open Charge Alliance
Energy industry stakeholders understand that one of the biggest challenges of the energy transition is interoperability. The only way to ensure interoperability is to adopt consistent standards at all levels of the energy systems tech stack. Standards can also provide benefits such as security and an ecosystem of products. Traditionally, standards organizations would develop standards using closed methodologies that often take years to complete and even longer to adopt. Open source methods for standards development have been increasingly used in order to develop standards faster with input from a wider variety of stakeholders, which also speeds adoption. This session will gather experts to discuss the importance of open standards and the process for developing them. Specific examples will be shared of how open standards are being used to drive the energy transition forward more quickly than traditional methodologies.
