That's what I love about Rockstar. In their GTA games (pre GTA 5) they always used story reasons to lock you from accessing the whole map. That way you're forced to get used to the area you're in and enjoy the quirks, activities, available weapons, and characters relegated to that area. GTA San Andreas was the most fun in that regard because when the story finally had you travel to a new part of the map, it felt like going on a brand new adventure seeing new vehicles, NPCs, weapons, activities, girlfriends to date, etc. And if you snuck into airport/police hangars, you couldn't even steal most planes/jets/helicopters until you went to flying school later in the game. So outside of cheats the game doesn't let you get so powerful so fast. What I didn't like about GTA 5 is that its entire map and activities (except some random events) were fully unlocked from jump. I get Rockstar wanted to try something new, but they blew their (metaphorical) load giving us all that content at once. It's overwhelming since it's such a big map. Which is why I hope GTA 6 goes back to basics since its map will be even bigger than GTA 5's.

Ubisoft barely makes new content. They just asset flip things from past games. They do no do anything new or unique. When most of the missions have no rewards, exploration is just collectables instead of hidden rewards, quests locations and characters, the open world isn't worth it. I love open world games. They're my favorite type. It just seems like companies don't know how to make them anymore.

Gta San Andreas set the bar high for open world games. When start in Los Santos and get used with the hood, the very next moment you get dumped in the countryside and the immersion is breathtaking. From npc, vehicles to radio Station everything feels different. Then San Fiero gives the urban vibe and Las Venturas gives the dazzling vibe in the middle of desert. GTA 4 makes the npc more active. From talking on phone, drinking coffee to playing and exercising in park and carrying crates in dockyard the npc activities make the map lively.

Finally, Yakuza is not exactly a open world game since the map consists only a block of a small area but it is the benchmark for other games on how to utilise a small area. The crowd, bizarre activities in every corner of the streets, accessibility to most of the buildings and change of infrastructure with every game. For example the Yakuza 0 and Yakuza Kiwami takes place in the same area but you can easily notice the change in the streets, lights, decorations and buildings. Then Yakuza 4 takes it to next level by giving access to rooftops and undergrounds in the same map which is a great example of expanding map vertically.

Your 3 points on what makes an open world game great is exactly why GTA IV is so good in my eyes, and it's my personal favorite.. Other people find the game too slow at the start but I actually love the 1st hour of the story. The way the game introduces the mechanics, now that I think about it, is paralleled to how Niko is being introduced to Liberty City. 1/3 of the map being available at the start is also great for easing players into the game as well as focusing on that 1/3 that is unlocked, it's been done since GTA III but its genius, and I argue that this progression gives GTA IV an edge over GTA V in that regard.

good vid but i feel like its a cop out to fit your narrative of steadily increasing difficulty as the player gets stronger is good. mostly because you exclude "medieval style games". like by your metric morrowind is a trash game and oblivion and skyrim are masterpieces(or at least objectively better). if anyone who has played all of those games took 2 seconds to think about that, they would spit out their drink and proceed to roast you. that said - some games do difficulty better, like sidegrades unlocked that are useful for a specific enemy or set of enemies. very broad statement but that covers a lot of games. doing it better than player NUMBER GO UP and enemy NUMBER GO UP. while still maintaining a sense of a player growing powerful either through story or simply going through a "low level" area from a "high level" one and going "sauron_swinging_mace.mp4" on their asses. souls series did this, deus ex did this, morrowind did this and probably many more that i can't think of rn. on the other hand if there is no increase in challenge while the player gets stronger it gets kind of boring. but not exactly. lots of games fill the power fantasy kind of vibe, battlefront 2, mercenaries series, saints row. what does fit your narrative is stuff like halo(talking about the og CE -> reach) you don't increase in power, you just get handed something really good for a setpiece battle and the player is expected to use their knowledge and experience(as the player increasing in power) to tackle the challenges. republic commando kind of does this as well but obviously you do get access to more options and the anti armor attachment is obviously a straight boon but you also get more heavily armored enemies as a result and your ammo is still heavily limited. also the force unleashed games.

Great vid. Regarding your 2nd point about player progression and game difficulty, it also matters how the game difficulty grows. For example, compare the new Assassin's Creeds to AC 2. In the new ones, the enemies become more challenging by just gaining a massive health bar, but in AC 2 the increased enemy challenge comes from the enemies fighting you better (they would counter and parry you more). The latter style is far more interesting.

Usually what kills it is the repetitive nature. Later Far Cry entries for sure. Go here, do this. Along the way you'll find enemy checkpoints and outposts. Libertate the outposts, reveal the map. Go here do this, checkpoints along the way. More outposts. Fun, but like you said about Wildlands, you end up doing the same thing for 30 hours. Eventually you unlock a ton of gear, but you typically end up using the few weapons you like. What spiced the game up was the addition of related tie in missions that were added to the game so once you completed the campaign, you're meeting up with Sam Fisher for the toughest damn mission I've ever had to beat in that game, sneaking into a base and stealing a helicopter with Kozak from GR and honestly- the best one was the Predator mission that totally pulls you in like its just another military mission- then you're finding the skinned bodies and you start hearing the music. What really bugs me is the lack of enemy response. You liberate a region and the enemy just goes "meh, guess we lost that one. We still have small patrols on the road there and keep manning checkpoints every time they get destroyed with no change in our defensive power. The enemy never reacts unless its a scripted point of the campaign. Where's the forceful counterattack? If you're a guerrilla or similar outnumbered force you can't always be on the attack. There's never any threat. Fucking Breakpoint had you living in the most obvious fucking mountain on the island that the enemy never checks out, patrols, raids or seizes and just keeps acting surprised when you keep taking them out base by base. Maybe they do attack it. Never finished the game. It was pretty goddamn retarded.

Great video! I think Witcher 3 really did the distraction element well - you often will run into side quests or random encounters that pull you from the main questline. Since CD Projekt Red also did Cyberpunk, I feel like that’s why the latter did that well too. The Elder Scrolls games are pretty solid in accomplishing that, like you said, but I never really felt that same pull with the Ubisoft games. However, I did think some of the Assassin’s Creed games with ships, like Odyssey and Black Flag, did that well. I am coincidentally playing Wildlands right now and I did a double-take when you mentioned the helicopters, as I’d been almost exclusively using them to get around the map and do quests faster. Still, these old games are definitely having more pull with me than the new ones, which have less “soul” in them.

About a year later and hearing over and over how amazing the Witcher was bla bla bla I decided to give it a 2nd shot. This time taking the time to understand how combat worked. Each swing and dodge is important, its like a dance. and its not a hack n slash. Now the game clicked and after the starting area my 1st play through was death martch. Not long after a friend told me to try Dark Souls 3 and the rest is history. Point being I guess lol..sometimes you need to give games a 2nd chance with new perspective and you might just be surprised. Ok #2 has to be called out right now. It is a sign of a bad game when player progression breaks down into an endless game of catching, which inevitably leads to the question of "What makes me so special?" What is player progression, if a player is always stagnant. This is just the sign of a bad gameplay loop. It is better to have them be an underdog, who then rises above. Progression is clear

Am I the only one that's starting to think open world games are kind of being overdone now? Maybe it's just me, but shorter time to complete games that are also insanely fun are starting to seem much more appealing. Especially over the monotony of most open world games where you have the story and then 800 boring ass side/fetch quests that you feel obligated to complete because you have a 100 percenter/completetionist mindset about games.

I'm convinced it's the hand holding. For example, in GR: Wildlands, you get two entirely different experiences depending on the HUD and difficulty settings you use. With the HUD, everything you do and every enemy is just an item in a checklist. They are meaningless beyond a step that must be completed. But with every HUD OFF, you get this immersive sim feeling to the game. Every enemy is a potential alert that ducks your world up with helicopters that you can't easily track. Exploration is rewarding because you don't know where to find every resource and upgrade.

I'm replaying Sleeping Dogs and though it's somewhat by the numbers in places, compared to modern open world titles it's especially brilliant. SD has a fun yet predictable story without a hint of "current day-isms"

I'd only add one more point. A good open world game makes itself loveable even if you don't like the idea of even playing it. For me that was RDR2. I hate cowboy games and anything related to the wild west but that game became one of the best I've ever played and I'm 49...

I played fc6 for roughly 6 hours before I accidentally hit the hidden endgame trigger. I flew a plane too far away from the map and “won”. Now the story was over (idk if it actually was) and I have nothing else to play for. So at that point I didn’t care enough to spend another 6 hours getting back to the same point. Also farcry games are all exactly the same. You unlock the same weapons, upgrades, and attachments in every single FC game since FC3. It’s the same exact game in a new setting every time. It makes it feel like there’s nothing to work towards since you’ve already experienced it all in the last FC.

I played this game for about an hour, maybe? Uninstalled and never touched it again. I also realized there was a DEI/ESG "confused man" in it as well so yeah, no thanks.

Unpopular opinion but i think Valhalla (in my opinion) had a really great story, most if not all of the newer rpgs/open world games- which are my favorite type of video games i get bored of almost immediately its either some woke liberal bullshit and/or poor story telling that makes me revert to all the older rpgs i love

Metal Gear Solid 5 is another "Solid" one here, maybe it was the nature of the game, but you couldn''t just stroll through it, same with Death's Stranding, I couldn't bring myself to finish that game without leaving those poor bastards a prestine highway.

I did sidequests in The Witcher 3 so long, that by the time I got back to the main quest, I forgot everything about it. It's a great game, you should try it, although you don't like the setting.

I find the first point a little condescending… So you don’t like Elden Ring why exactly? Because it does the 2 other points, and checks off a few other aspects you said you like about open world games. In Elden Ring you literally make your own character, you make them how you want them to be. If anything that gives a tremendous amount of care for the character you personally created and wanted to bring into the world. For the “A good open world game makes me care about the characters and the world before letting me loose”. Elden Ring does the opposite it lets you loose and than from there you’ll start to meet the characters and learn and care about the world. Souls games are all about the community and reading item descriptions, the intro to Elden Ring already gives a ton of information and it’s vague on purpose. It’s up to you and your imagination to piece the rest together either by doing it yourself and going to the community to share your theory’s. Or go to the community first see what the basic story is about and form your own conclusions, and create your own theory’s from there. I know this works because that was me, I didn’t read item descriptions I went straight to KZitem. But now after two years I’m invested, and I have my own theory’s I’m subscribed to and others I completely disagree and others that I’m on the fence with it’s all about interpretation. The Elden Ring DLC comes out this summer and I now actually want to read all the item descriptions and discover the story for my self and THAN go to KZitem and see all the discourse and everyone sharing what they all think, that’s the joy of it. I strongly suggest going into Elden Ring again with an open mind that this is just a different form of story that practically works the same way as the games you listed in the video. Good video btw I agree with all of your points because these points are basically what Elden Ring is.

I'm glad you like Elden Ring. Take no issue with anything you said. I think the Souls games make you care about them because of the difficulty. (And possibly the lore if you read up on it.) I have nothing against the Souls games I just am not a huge fan of medieval stuff. But they are well designed

What kills me is when a game fails justify its open world in the first place like LA Noire or the Assassins Creed games. You can straight up skip the driving segments in that game entirely so what exactly was the point in painstakingly recreating 1940s LA if I can just skip it? The original Assassins Creed is one of the most overrated tech demos Ive ever played. We got wide cities to climb around in but nothing of substance to actually do.
