I believe 90% of society will root for the Kims because they relate to their motivations and lifestyle more than the one of the Parks, we all want to believe that bad behavior is justified when people have “Motives” e.g. when someone kills their daughter murderer, but it isn’t. Society is unfair here and in China but that’s not an Excuse for doing all of the above, the poor dad must go to prison because he committed murder regardless of his social class and that rational explanation is why I root for the Parks, even if I liked the Kims more.

Thank you for that cool little piece of information! Any more insights for foreigners? I really liked the movie, as I do many other South-Korean movies, but I'm always a little bit sad that, while I get the basic plot and themes, small details and subtleties might get "lost in translation" viewing it as an European with limited knowledge on Korean culture. Sometimes I'm not even sure if I'm supposed to be laughing at a certain scene, maybe a native Korean would be giggling at something completely different, something I would not get. I definitely picked up a lot of dark humour in this one, though.

Yet, one of the biggest tragedies of this whole situation is that there was a a moment when all three families could've coexisted nicely. With Kevin, Jessica and the dad working there, they would've made a lot money. Koreans shell out major cash for any sort of academic tutoring. I know of doctors wives working as maids to pay for their kids tutors. So at this point, the Parks would've been blissfully and ignorantly pleased. The Kims would've been able to "move up", and the original maid would've been happily secretly taking care of her husband. Kind of like the symbiotic nature of our world... Just a thought.

dalimassite yes, I agree. If they hadn’t been so absorbed in their greed, everything would have been different. But i must say, they were dirt poor before, so of course when they saw a chance like that, they had to grasp that, and furthermore they didn’t know that the old housekeeper was in dire need of her position. Although if any of them has some plan ahead, they wouldn’t have immersed themselves into their fake rich life and save up to invest in their future, especially when the son has a relationship going strongly with the Park’s daughter. its truly inspiring to see how Parasite has achieved worldwide fame when the entirety consists of Korean inside jokes. Bong Jun Ho is notorious for his intense focus on details and i believe that Parasite is the perfect example, even though a lot of reviewers and commenters each contributed their own take to the film and have caught on to the major differences in behavior, the list still goes on and on, like how at the beginning Ki-Jung, the daughter, suggests typing in '12345678'for the wifi code to how the parasite family changes from drinking cheap Korean beer to a more high-end brand of Japanese craft sake to celebrate, or like how the melody of the now-popular "Jessica jingle" is the fun rhythm of one of Korea's most popular golden oldie. Not to mention how the director caught the mannerisms and overall atmosphere of the modern-day Korean upper and lower class to a tee! I wasnt intending to sound so nationalistic, but Im just really proud that a film whose main target audience wasnt on an international scale managed to spark such a huge phenomenon.

SOME POINTS ONLY NOTICED BY KOREANS The Korean title of Parasite (기생충) is Ki Seng Chung. The poor family son, daughter and father's names are Ki Woo, Ki Jung and Ki Taek. Part of their names have part of the word Parasite in it. I think there was a conscious effort because you never have father and son/daughter have the same middle name. It's just not done. The black noodle dish in the movie called RamDon (made up name for translation-actual called Champagetti) is a combination of $.60 popular instant noodle and the most expensive Wagyu beef of Korea. This is a combination of extreme ingredients. There must me a metaphor there. The poor dad being coached how to act by the poor son was an inside joke for Koreans. *Spoiler* Love how in the movie they said the best plan is no plan at all because they never tend to go the way you want it to, but then near the end of the movie, because the dad got trapped in the basement, Kiwoo makes a plan saying how he’ll buy the house ! makes you think he got super successful and then you find out it was all his imagination ^~^ super smart.

Honestly I think the basement couple were the most moral in the film. The poor old former caretaker just kindly requested the Kims to feed her husband in exchange for some money. It was the Kim's ego that got hurt, thats why Mrs.Kim rejected doing that and threatening to call the police even though Mrs Kim hade done something way worse than the caretaker. After earning money the Kims had become egoistic b*tches and Mrs. Kim was the first person to kill someone in the film by pushing the caretaker down the stairs. That eventually led to all the conflict

I’ve seen it with a really mixed group of 6 people. 2 students (including me), my father who barely has the money to get along, my Aunt and Uncle who are pretty wealthy, almost as wealthy as the family in Parasite and a “working class” friend. All of us thought that this is an amazing film, it’s entertaining and sparks very interesting conversations. Even more interesting: each of us took something different out of it with different scenes that stood out. Even better: the more I read and watch about it, the more I realize how many levels this film has, how deep it goes and the observations it does. IMO it’s a masterpiece and I really think that, even if you don’t want to think about our society or how the world works to much, you’ll have a great time watching it. 10/10.

Another thing that a lot of people don't seem to mention is how prevalent lines are in this movie....it's not obvious but you can feel the line that must not be crossed, the divide between 2 characters in the way each scene is shot and in the architecture of the house. As someone who has watched this after the Oscars, this is one of the best reviews out there. I could have read another 90 min's of subtitles (typical American tone) but seriously!! Starting with the "by any means necessary" attitude from the Kim family *with the box folding as they breathe in insect repellent*, to the meticulous blocking scheme of the full Kim on Park family infiltration. I've never seen a movie that portrays a sign of the times as well as Parasite. This masterpiece will be studied for years to come. Bravo, Bong Joon

The film itself is a huge metaphorical cloud that just hangs over your head. As a Korean-American, I noticed many Korean-esque behaviors, the language, the culture, etc. However, even if you don't know the language and culture, there's a juxtaposition between the wealth disparity of rich/poor, compared to Korea and here in the West. But this film just had the very heavy Korean flavor. I only watched the film once and do plan to watch it again to see if I catch anything more. From the "hanwoo" (Korea's very expensive meat) beef scene, to the "38th parallel" (South Korea's border with North Korea") quote, there's so many other things that really make you think. Of how the father always keeps the windows open, which can be translated to his mindset and financially poor lifestyle. "Free extermination" and open windows led down to the flooding scene. And in the flooding scene in which they escape, the film captures them going down the stairs. From the high riches and height of the wealthy, they walk down in sewer infested waters to only spend a night in the gymnasium. I also love how you mentioned that this movie is "realistic" and "can happen." My dad watched the movie and firmly believed that this can actually happen. Korean films in general pretty much almost always ends in tragedy and gives me the big sad. And perhaps that's because of the current status quo in Korea and it's just part of Korean entertainment. However, beyond that, Bong Joon Ho is a genius. This film is absolutely phenomenal and has made me extremely uncomfortable. And I love it when a film does that with critical precision. This movie has wanted to make me scream. Also, I do think that the stinkbug in the beginning of the film means something, but I'll have to watch it again to reconfirm it. Other thing that I heavily felt in the movie it’s that it’s very claustrophobic, the movie itself makes you and the characters feel alienated. Everything seems so familiar yet it looks like a parallel universe. I felt isolated and I felt the characters were isolated too, all of them. Really in Kubrick’s style, I knew it was south korea I knew it was maybe Seoul and I know how low and high class neighborhoods look there but it just felt... odd, like things weren’t quit right but they seemed to be and that fits majestically with the film itself

Found this good analysis comment on another review, jung's comment - "I think the biggest function of this film is in highlighting the rather innocent ignorance by the rich towards the poor. The wealthy family is portrayed as very polite, and reasonable people who are not particularly arrogant or malicious. But they are clueless about the lives of the people that they employ around the house and accidentally offend them by reacting to the driver's smell instinctively. The poor admires the rich and gets to know so much about them and almost convinces themselves that their lives are practically the same as that of their employers only to face the rude awakening later. The film title Parasite is also not a flattering way of describing the less fortunate members of the society, and this juxtaposition of portraying the rich as innocent and poor and conniving and somewhat cruel makes this film so unique of movie that speaks to capitalism. Perhaps there are call outs for both extremes, the wealthy to raise their level of awareness regarding the poor and the poor to not obsess over the glamorous neighbors..."
@KK-pm7ud
4 жыл бұрын
I'm confused how this comment describes the privileged viewpoint at all. At no point in the film does the privileged family care about those that serve them. Any action that seems to suggest otherwise is just one that is intended to fulfill the needs of the privileged class. (The love affair that the young girl has with her tutor is one example of this. The respect that the mother shows for her son's tutor is another. It stems from her desire to be a good mother and her fear of failing him. She wants him to be both a happy child and have a successful career / life to continue their social standing.) The privileged family's actions clearly signal to the servants that there is always a barrier between them and their employers. It's not innocence. It is willful ignorance. They are worlds apart; and by design. While the rich family never goes out of their way to be unkind, they always find ways to make it clear that there are boundaries between them. Maintaining the distance of the employer / employee relationship. Reminding them that they are workers and that they are never to cross that line. The reaction to the smell of their servants was not accidental. It was entirely intentional. While they did not want to tell the driver about his smell to his face, they were concerned about how his smell would reflect upon them. (For example, if they decided to bring a friend into the car when the driver was there as well. How would it reflect on them if their driver smelled odd?) Just like when the previous driver was 'caught' with panties in the car. They did not want to communicate the reason why they were letting him go. They just wanted him gone because having a 'pervert' driving their car would not reflect well on their family or their status in the community. While there is A LOT more that could be unpacked in the film, I do think that the film's intention was never to make a judgement call on what is bad nor good behavior. What is right or wrong about class and wealth inequality. The film attempts to place these two families (among others) in situations that explore some themes related to class in modern society. It even examines dynamics amongst others within a certain level of class (e.g.- the maid, the pizza box company, the drunk man on the street, etc.) to let the audience reflect upon the human condition and, perhaps, the unfairness of fairness.

Bryan Lu the kims used the parks every bit as much as the parks used the Kims. The only reason the got to know the parks I sneaked they had to fool them and needed information. They didn’t care about them. The kims didn’t care about the housekeeper and her husband and vice verse. Everyone’s living from their own perspective in life and seen through the eyes of each story, none are really right or wrong.

Beautiful, haunting edits that confuse then bewilder the senses as the mind struggles to keep up with the eyes...staggeringly shocking developments you *can't see coming a mile away... and characters that act real, behave real, and seem real throughout make this film my personal favorite of the year. I keep juggling between PARASITE and DOGMAN for my best film of the year. Both are impeccably shot and send you away to somewhere new and interesting; both are tales about status, class, the underdog, exacting a sort of vengeance, and both films end in a similar way. I was more engrossed with DOGMAN simply because you're with the main character the entire movie, and it really gives you his perspective, and I could fixate on his journey so completely, unfettered by other actors or flashy editing. With PARASITE it was like an opera; DOGMAN was like an intimate concert. I might have to give them both top honors.

It's a weirdly gorgeous film. There's so much blocking as you see Bong Joon Ho's placement of characters. Just weirdly beautiful. Great review! Just saw this in the U.S. and never really thought "I'm watching an Asian film". The characters are so relatable and the story so universal that the language didn't really matter. The main story was told through subtle facial expressions, actions and posture. I didn't need the dialog to tell me about the class disparity or the fears and aspirations of the families in the story. In fact, almost all of the dialog in the film is complete falsehood. The characters are usually just lying to or confessing their lies to each other. Fortunately, I had no idea what the film was about. The last Bong Joon Ho film I saw was The Host, so I was hilariously expecting something completely different from a movie called "Parasite". I'm so glad I was so wrong, as it left me totally unprepared for a "horror" movie in which each of the human characters were somehow the true Monster. A masterpiece indeed!

What are people's thoughts on the use of food in this film, throughout the overarching story line? I find that the stylistic choices of Bong Joon-ho are shown in these elements, how he decisively placed them, i.e. the color and vibrancy, and "clean" well, put together items of food that really focus on the divide of class and wealth. As well, how truly integral food is for survival and how much these issues drive a person or change someone's mindset in order to survive or have a decent life. The design elements collectively speak to this. I thought it was intriguing that he put such a strong focus on food, something that is a basic need, & the idea of having it, but having it well, what that means socially when you are poor or have struggled to live. On a separate, yet unnecessary note, I find it interesting that so many people immediately assume that because someone is poor, that it means they are lazy, when there are plenty of reasons for one being poor that has nothing to do with work ethic. For instance, health and/or education, where you're born, what you're born into. That's not to say rich people don't earn their living, because most of them do, but that's not always the case, just as much as it isn't always someone's fault they are poor.

Deserves Best Foreign Language Film, easily. Masterpiece. Good call on EXTERMINATING ANGEL.
Now that I think about it... the way you used the background music from the movie, to put it in your video while you were explaining... it was absolutely wonderful. But I really love this movie, there's soooo much to talk about it...

Hello. Thank you for the in-depth explanation on this movie, it really made me realize why I love it so much: it's the contrasting scenes that heightened the in-coming shock from the audience. By the way, I would never have thought you weren't a native English speaker had you not pointed out that you were Asian. Your English is flawless. And I've got a favor to ask: could you list all the movies you have mentioned in this video down in the description box? Thanks a lot!

The scene where the Kims are sitting in the apartment during the fumigation was actually the most distressing to me. It’s as if they’re the bugs in the basement that society is trying to exterminate but they’re defiantly holding on. Also I couldn’t help thinking about people eating the pizza that would go in the boxes covered in bug spray. Ugh!

I also thought the bug spray was gonna be why they turned away the boxes lol

Just saw it last night. Totally agree. Masterpiece. Awesome to see something that’s one of a kind amidst all the sequels and remakes Hollywood pumps out these days.

I waited months for it to be in the Theatre and unfortunately got spoiled by comments on one of the trailers but still was psyched about it. The half of the movie I felt like there were bugs crawling all of my body. I couldn’t get rid of that feeling. The first movie I ever wanted to go back and watch in the theatre again. Amazing. Hopefully it is nominated for Best Picture too

Aside from a brief mention about the use of blocking, you made a 7 minute youtube film called "why parasite is a masterpiece" where all you say is "its great" again and again....

While clearly not going into details/Spoiler territory, he did in fact speak about the movie's transcending genre, ambivalence and changes in tone, the meticulous attention paid to the character of its sets, suspenseful pacing, blocking, and all of this giving the film a sense of unease. So, yeah, he did mit plunge into depths as to how the film achieved these effects in him; but If you take his reasoning at face value you get a good gist of the type of movie it is, how these techniques come together, and what he likes about it. All of this in less than ten minutes.

like 95% of all the other so-called reviews... this movie got so much hype and praise, but nobody can explain exactly why.

@@blokkka9inety293 It's a very well made drama/thriller with a lot of meaning to it. I don't know if it's one of the best movies of the decade or anything but it is pretty great.

It’s not a bad thing if asian people like asian movies 🤦🏻 he’s a director of korean descent and he’s a genius. Cool.

Levi Loves erwin this is just something really westernized Asians tend to say to white ppl. No one else is bothered by this notion.

He said that "Asian people like movies BECAUSE it is made by Asian people" They didn't like the movie because of its characters, plot, ideas, etc. They liked it because it was made by an Asian person.
