Your video actually convinced me to buy iPad 8, I was considering iPad 8, iPad air 3, or iPad air 4. I only gonna use it for note taking, drawing and edit simple video. So actually my concern is the difference between non laminated display and ram size, other specs does’t really matter. But I just can’t seems to justify the difference of $100 for laminated display on iPad air 3 and I only get 64GB (it has 3 gb ram too), and even if I got extra ram for iPad air 4 that will give more layers on procreate, I think it’s better if I want to upgrade later to iPad pro (6gb ram) if I think it was really necessary. Moreover you need to buy 2nd gen apple pencil that were more expensive so it’ll cost $250 more than iPad 8 128 gb plus apple pencil gen 1. So iPad 8 it is. I have it for a week and i love it! It’s definitely help me lineart than my huion pen tablet, the air gap is a little bit hard to adjust at first but it’s definitely tolerable and now I can predict where my lines drawn. Oh and it still have earphone jack which I prefer since I always forgot to charge my Bluetooth earphone, so I never really use it even if I have it lol.

Im currently struggling choosing between the two. Im abit nerdy and techy so i am somewhat wary about what il get with each device and am also thinking about the future proofing each device has...I can stretch to buy the air 4 without breaking the bank(it will dent my wallet for this month though) and i want to buy something solid as i will keep whichever ipad i buy a very loong time. It will be my first ipad. Obviously the 8 is attractive but then I think of all the extras il get for an extra 200usd with the air 4: * 64 base storage * Apple pencil 2 * Double tap apple pencil 2 to enable eraser(seems small but it one of those conviniences that quickly become essential as you use them sort of like headphones with auto device switching for audio) * Apple pencil magnetic attaches to ipad and always charged together with ipad so theoretically you dont have to think about recharging your apple pencil or finding a way to keep it together with the ipad * A14(probably better ipados 15 support for new features) so better performance * Longer software support * Laminated display * Updated design with uniform bezels * Thinner lighter design * Bigger display in relatively same size chassis as iPad 8 * Usb c for future proofing and better transfer speeds and more accessories * Better stereo set up for the speakers * Basically same great battery life with bigger display Its a very compelling purchase over the 8. Maybe im just experiencing buyers remorse for buying an expensive item before i have actually bought it. But im really leaning towards the air 4

I am using iPad Pro 2018 and in my usage I can say apples implementation of usb c is not as robust as I expected , I think it will be the same case of iPad Air 4. Honestly speaking my Android LG phone uses the usbc port much better than iPad example full screen display when connected to big screen, support for DisplayPort . Basically what I am saying is don’t expect usbc on iPad to work in a similar way that usbc works on other devices. Lightning might be okay for now. Also usbc headphone sound horrible on iPad for some reason on iPads. Finally a14 processor with no pro-motion really limits the capabilities of the iPad Air 4. This is a great review and the production quality is outstanding!

You make valid points here and honestly it comes down to the same thing we each know the response to: what is the most you can afford for this purchase and pair that with what are you gaining from this product: pleasureful downtime via media consumption, shopping? You also need to consider the lifetime of an Apple product. If you buy a wrong generation, it won’t be worth in the long run. I have the first generation iPad Air (7 years old) whereas my cousin has a 7 month older model. His iPad died a couple of years ago, no longer supported and apps won’t work, while I’m still using mine and considering buying Air 4 in the next 6 months to use it for another 6 years. Also I’m still using an iPhone 5S, more than 6 years old, but iPhone 5 has already been dead for a long time now. 5 years from now, iPad Air 4 will still be relevant and useable but I can’t say the same thing for iPad 8. If you want a temporary Apple toy for 3 years, go for cheaper iPad 8. But if you want a device that you want to rely on and will be supported for many years to come go for Air 4. Reasonable people buy Apple products because they last long and are valuable in the long run. If you want a tablet you wanna play around for a while you might also consider an Android tablet, i.e Samsung. It will be cheaper and better than the iPad 8 and have a similar lifetime. iPad 8 is a trap for fanboys, who wants Apple no matter what. You need to be a tad smarter when buying Apple: - Air 4 is the best, don’t buy Pro(2020) and iPad 8 - iPhone 12 is a good choice, avoid 11 and X series, if you’re tight on budget SE 2020 is the greatest value, it will have more lifetime than any X series. I’m still holding onto my 5S but I’ll probably wait for 12S to see what it brings, it might be better choice than 12 or even if not, it will drop the price of 12. - Watch 6 is good but SE is just better value and they will have the same lifetime of support. 6 just have more colors and useless EKG and O2 in blood features, they don’t work reliably. If you need those features, buy a dedicated devices for those. - For Macs it’s obvious that you should only buy M chips. If you’re a high end user and need a Mac asap, you might buy a Pro but it will lose value quickly in a couple of years. If you’re not in a hurry, be patient or go for a custom build PC with Ryzen if you’re not using Apple exclusive software. At the high end, you should only buy Apple if you absolutely need Apple’s software (i.e Logic, Final Cut). Because any custom build PC will perform many times better at that level: more than $2k desktop, and will have future upgradability, which is something you should consider if you’re a professional. - Macbook Air M1 is better than Macbook pro 13” M1. You don’t need fans for that chip, it will only suck dust in. Instead upgrade your RAM to 16 GB on Air for that price difference and you’ll have a laptop you can use for the next 7 years. If you think you need fans because you’ll do high performance tasks, than neither of those are for you anyway. That chip is not powerful enough to utilize cooling and it’s bad at multicore tasks. Wait for the Pro version of M1 (aka M1X). It will probably have more base clock and more high performance cores with more gpu cores to handle high end tasks.

I bought both, the Air, the iPad 8, plus my son has the 2019 iPad 7 so I got to compared all 3 tablets. I do not recommend the iPad AIR. Next I will explain why. Most people want a tablet to consume media, if you want to create content get a regular computer, that said specs are not that important, the regular iPad is just as powerful as the Air for everyday task. Next, I got very sensitive eyes and ears, am very picky about sound quality and video quality. I use a tablet to consume media, so it better sound good and it better have a well color calibrated screen. iPad air failed on both accounts. First, the sound, the only advantage is that it has speakers on both sides, so if you holding the tablet with one hand you still have sound coming out of the other side. But the speakers on the Air sound muffled, it didn't sound crisp, in this regard the 2019 iPad 7 had the better sound. Second, the display, the iPad Air has a feature called True Tone, all that does is make the screen yellow, like the night reading mode, just turn off the feature. I didn't find any ambient lighting situation where the True Tone didn't inject a good amount of yellow. But even with the True Tone feature turned off, the iPad Air display has a bias toward Yellow and Green which I hate. I don't like looking a green snow scenes and yellow skin tones all the time. I tend to enjoy more red/blue, pinkish skin tones. In that regards the iPad 8/7 have better calibrated screens. Third the physical form, I am not a fan of that hard square edges of the iPad Air. The soft round edges of the iPad 7/8 is much more comfortable to hold on to, The iPad Air felt heavy, bulky and hard to hold on to. While the iPad 7/8 felt more practical to carry around, and cozy to hold on to. The iPad Air has its speakers tune for voice, while the regular iPad has a more pleasing smile equalized sound. The iPad Air does have a better anti reflective coating on the screen, which helps improve the deep blacks. Finally, the iPad Air cost twice as the regular iPad, but you do not get any advantage other than USB C charging port. I would better recommend a 128GIG iPad 8 for $400. Better colors, better sound, better physical form, same performance for regular usage.

Hi Tech Gear, thank you for your video! I am deciding between the air and the 8 because the price difference here in Brazil is huge. I already have a MacBook Pro for heavy tasks and I want an Ipad for light tasks, such as web browsing, watching videos, reading e-mails and news, and also as a second screen for my MacBook. I don't care for design, camera, sound, gaming and apple pencil (a children draws better than me hehe), so I guess the iPad 8 fits all my needs (even the entry version of 32GB). The USB-C thing is not a big deal for me as I am already used to apple "dongle" ecosystem. Thank you!

- Side bezels are actually thinner on the 10.2 ipad (7th-9th gen), plus there is no split keyboard option on the air 4 - 4 speaker grills, but only 2 real speakers inside, just lmao - chassis made of foil (actually common problem for both the Airs and Pros). Put it in the backpack the wrong way, and it will bend easily - Fully laminated screen, but with worse response time (around 30+ ms white-black vs 18-20ms in the ipad 10.2 ), and coupled with potential repair costs, the air 4/5 holds no advantages really. - 6mm thickness, which is not real because of the camera bump. Wont sit flush on the table until you get a case - battery life is better with 10.2 ipad But the air (not the crappy 4, but the newer 5th gen M1) is more powerful indeed. Still its way more fragile, and comes with fake speaker grills which at least to me looked like a ripoff (personally had a 256g ipad air 4, not the best experience, had it with black smart folio cover, still it bent near the pencil area after putting it into backpack, sold it and got 9th gen instead). If you want a real ipad, go for the 12.9 pro (either 2020 or newer m1/m2), they arent that expensive compared to air, and you get a proper display, proper speakers. But if you need to carry the ipad with you, better stick with 9th gen (a13, 2+ days of battery life, proper rigid chassis). The 10th gen bends easily and has worse battery life, not recommended. And the Air series should be avoided unless you strike a really good deal.

Thank you so much for this video. It’s super helpful although I’m still stuck between the two. If the iPad 8 had Apple Pencil 2 support, I would hands down be convinced on the iPad 8. I feel that the Apple Pencil 1 is already an antiquated design because of the charging features. Because of this, I am leaning towards the iPad Air 4, but I’m hesitant because it’s above my price point. But as you suggest in the video, I’m also thinking about the future because I have a 5 year old think pad laptop that may need to be retired in a year or two and so having an iPad Air 4 to replace it in the future interim may be ideal for me in the long run.....just thinking out loud.... This video is definitely getting me closer to making my choice. Thanks again for the quality content! Happy New Year!

Glad I could help nudge you closer to a decision. Sounds like you think the Air 4 is the better choice - but I’d it’s truly above your price point than I would probably remove it as an option. The question then is - do you need a new device right now? Or can you save up for the air 4? Appreciate you being part of the community 🙏🏻

I only could afford the iPad 8th gen. 32 Gb, and yes the lack of storage is a pain. But besides that, I couldn’t be happier. It’s been a beautiful experience being my first Apple tablet. The capabilities are fantastic! I just have to deal with unloading files every once in a while to a USB stick. I’m learning photo editing with Pixelmator Pro and writing some life experiences with Notability. Got a Logitech Crayon pencil and a few accessories also. A case is a must to preserve it beauty. As soon as I can get me an iPad Air, this one goes to my 11 y/o daughter. Great video!
