I like how half the replies on this are like "NO CALEB YOURE WRONG LOW LIGHT SENSITIVITY IS NOT FOR PROFESSIONAL FILM MAKERS BECAUSE THEY USE LIGHTING" and your video never mentions low light or DR once. It's all about the importance of the multi-aspect sensor and having complete control of choreographed movement of the sensor.

Honestly, as a documentary filmmaker I’d rather have no IBIS and better slow mo/larger image/low light capability. Sure, IBIS is great. Although, even as a run n gun doc filmmaker I wouldn’t handhold the camera unless it was a spur of the moment “I need this shot now” incident. I would at the very least have a small handheld gimble or a shoulder mount with an IS lens mounted which would make up for no lens/camera dual stabilization. Even if I was in a “NOW” situation The IS on lens would make up for most of the shakiness. I find better low light capability more beneficial as a doc filmmaker than IBIS because I can easily stabilize with small portable tools whereas there is no easily portable tool to fix poor low light situations.

really now ? Ibis is not important for a run n gun filmaker ? did you really said that " a run and gun doc filmaker should have a small handheld gimble ..." ? My God... Do you really have any idea how much time you need to balance correct a handheld gimbal ? BY FAR no way to do this as a run n gun film maker. IBIS is one the most important thing in documentary filmaker on the streets or in a war zone or in a mountain... Imagine a documentary filmaker in the middle of nowhere, at night, or at rain, or at a demonstration or whatever to try to find his gimbal or his shoulder mount... For Gods shake... you really have no idea what you are talking about man.

Well, I think for me what is weird is that if they're targeting the pro filmmaker who is going to have exact control over their lighting conditions, what do they need the better iso sensitivity for? I feel like that is much better suited for the run and gun, no setup type of filming. But yeah, they each def have their pros and cons, but still disappointing this one couldn't have JUST added things, rather than add some and take away some.

Simple, and straightforward explanation, wonderful work. Thanks for that! Indeed, these are two different cameras made for different purposes. My guess, most complainers didn't see that difference, and thought the GH5s was no more than an upgrade to the GH5... which is wrong. It's a different version. Although I might digress, I am quite glad Blackmagic Design is taking (as rumored) the GH5s sensor over the on in the GH5, for their soon-to-come camera. Want stabilization? Use a lens that has it, get a gimbal, use tripod tricks, or have steady hands. No secret around it!

Your GH5 "sensor"is still slightly oversized. The m43 mount/lens "light circle" was designed to accommodate the movement of an IBIS system. This means that the m43 sensor is slightly smaller than the m43 light circle to allow for movement without vignetting with IBIS.

Wouldn't run and gun shooters want more low light abilities? And filmmakers usually use lights in their production, so they do not need the low light abilities. Ideally low light and stabilization is better for run and gun shooters, not for filmmakers.

PatriotPrepper both have plenty of dynamic range to spare - while arguably the pro filmmakers might appreciate a little more ability to mess with grading in post, the GH5 is not wanting in that department and the GH5s pixel size has other benefits to 4k video than sensitivity.

Used this camera for 2 years now, yes this camera is pretty much a different beast. Having that larger sensor does wonders not just for having a wider field of view, which tbh I don't notice myself, but the combined with larger pixels makes it great for kids light. Sony cameras are actually inferior to the GH5s, even the a9 series. They have problems that aren't immediately obvious, including terrible highlight roll-off and very aggressive noise reduction, plus there's the lack of 4:2:2 and 10-bit options which is a deal-breaker for a professional filmmaking workflow.
@zguy95135

I wonder what the crop factor is now with the new sensor, it should bring it closer to a Super 35 which is exciting. I think a lot of the reason Panasonic has been getting some mixed reaction is of how they are marketing it. It's a small, feature packed "Cinema" camera rather than a multi function run and gun capable all rounder like the GH5. It comes across as a smaller MP and non IBIS GH5 for more money instead of a FS7/EVA-1 lite.

That’s a good breakdown, but if you take a moment to focus on low light / ISO performance only, you would think it’s the KZitemr, wedding film maker, documentarian and others who typically have less control over lighting who should need the sensitivity. So it would seem the GH5 should have the IBIS stripped and the 5S should have IBIS placed in it instead for all of this to really make sense. Not that they would walk back the product line up like that...
@HelpUsSaveLives

Does the GH5s have a slightly LESS crop factor, compared to the GH5 and other M43 camera sensors, since it is slightly larger? Another question; if the sensor is wider it appears to be taller as well. Do you have the total size in square mm or square inches to compare? It appears to be roughly 8-10% larger which should equate to a lower crop factor than 2:1.

As far as I have read other peoples opinions, the reason does not matter at all. And I for my part dont care about what Panasonic thinks about this neither. I dont need to know *why* the GH5s lacks the feature every run&gun videographer wants - I just know that now *I* cannot consider this camera anymore. And I too think that the GH5s may be *aimed* for a professional user, but in reality I think that mostly semi-pros and one-man-bands will pick up this camera. And to escalate my opinion even further: I am certain that *if* the GH5s had IBIS, the amount of solo shooters and run&gun shooters that would have bought the camera, would be much higher than professionals with controlled shooting environments.
@sorinflorea

for sure, and if they'd make a full frame one. A full frame GH5s with stabilization and higher iso would make most sony shooters go for it. well maybe if the a7s3 is still 8 bit. As far as I can tell the GH5 is popular with some wedding photographers mostly because it's a workhorse and does what you need it to do. Pro video shooters would probably rather have pro video cameras but for weddings it's nice to have the kind of small camera that you can pack easily, carry two lightweight bodies around and probably would prefer having IBIS in many situations.

I have to respectfully disagree with you. In my opinion, considering the Panasonic offer, if you are serious about filmmaking, then the Panasonic EV-1 is for you. Means if you have all the accessory to have control over your shooting, namely gimbals, lighting, crew, cinema lenses etc, then you have the budget for a better body. Hence, the Panasonic EV-1. The size of the GH5(s) body is all about traveling, having light gears to go wherever you want. Marketing wise I think this is a missed opportunity from Panasonic to target the A7SII (III) audience that the GH5s could have addressed.
@joebuslife9275

My understanding is that only by taking out IBIS was it possible to do things like duel ISO and Multi aspect. Therefore they didn't leave out IBIS solely for those who didn't want it, but they became the people the Camera would work for since you could only get these new features without IBIS, at least currently. To me it's as simple as if they could have left IBIS in, they would have. They would've been able sell way more units and would never have talked about this whole segment who doesn't want it. If it was possible to have it in the first place maybe then they would have made a GH5se or something where IBIS was removed for such specific use cases. Also this is still smaller than an EVA1 and costs less so it still makes sense to buy some of these for tight spaces or for potentially dangerous spots like near explosions.

It's already availlable around here! I'll definitely be getting one (once there's some kind of incentive, like a free XLR unit)! The GH5 has been nice and now I have the G9 to more or less replace my dedicated stills E-M1 and D5300. But I really consider the GH5S as a sorta BMPCC successor optimized for ergonomics/interface/features. A camera that's meant to thrive in all sorts of production type environments. [..] Back in the day with the GH2, GH4, BMPCC we didn't know any better than to throw the camera on sticks, use dollies, sliders, jibs/cranes, mechanical and electronic stabilizers or use lens stabilization. And really, with any of the Canon interchangeable lens cameras you're not getting image stabilization either, yet especially the KZitem crowd keeps on getting them (for their application other things might weigh-in more). But it's not like you can't make it work. In fact, for over decades the pros have been shooting exactly like that. Take a Blackmagic URSA Mini, Sony FS, Canon EOS Cinema, RED Raven, ARRI Alexa Mini et cetera and guess what? You don't get sensor stabilization. And guess what else? They don't have silky smooth C-AF either. That's because focus is a creative control that literally directs the focus of the audience. So you work with manual focus, focus pulling, et cetera. So, you really have to regard the GH5S as a cinema camera. Apart from mainly uncompressed RAW or having 15 stops of dynamic range or something perhaps, it has all the bells and whistles you could hope for in a cinema camera. But it's still a super small form factor, so you can cram it in tight spots or be able to draw less attention to the camera. It's more practical and less expensive and the main feat: you can crank up the ISO to your likings! Yes, ideally you light your scene, but there are instances that this would not be a very realistic task. I think it's a great camera. And, unlike e.g. the EVA1 with EF-mount, I'm not forced out of my over the years put together collection that I have no desire to get rid of, partly because of still using the G9 and prefering 4/3" because smaller lenses are possible for the system! The G9 will be great as a stills cam and will provide me with IBIS capability for certain shots. For the rest the GH5S will be the main go-to choice for video. Means I'll be saying goodbye to the GH5... I'd rather be going for both extremes of the spectrum than one that does a little bit of bit decently. You just have to understand what the GH5S is about. If you were expecting Canon's DualPixel C-AF like quality... well, wasn't very likely (but rumors about patents are looking good!). If you were expecting IBIS... they still kept it in the same GH5 body, but used a bigger multiaspect ratio sensor. A free-floating sensor has a hard time dissipating heat. Heat increases noise levels. Motion artifacts. There's legit reasons. I get it's not very practical, it's not very vlogger friendly, but a cinematographer should be able to appreciate what it can do.
@JamesJacksonFilmz

You know what I appreciate? You Good Sir! That was a great comment on the whole situation and I whole heartily agree. I believe the GH5s will even be a bigger success in the cinema world than the EVA-1. Mainly because, the EVA-1 is a middle of the road cinema camera where other cameras in the same market (C200, FS7, Ursa Mini Pro) all have key features that make them distinct for very specific markets, while the EVA-1 tries to be all these things and is a Master of none. The GH5s on the other hand I see as the camera that reshapes peoples perspective of what a M4/3s camera can do and essentially eliminate the Gap between it and it's FF competitors. But I digress. Good post!
@shiznuts
6 жыл бұрын
Haha, well: 'well said' right back at ya! I started out with interchangeable lens cameras with the GH2 and there has never really been a realistic 'up' for the shooter that roughly went through each GH iteration basically. Now there finally is, I feel like; although I have to admit, I was close to calling it a wrap on MFT and looking to switch to Fujifilm for example (I honestly can't stand Sony, Canon, et cetera) would they bring that rumored videocentric X-H1 with sensor stabilization and touchscreen (they've been making improvements over these recent years, just aren't quite there yet). But if Panasonic manages to give me APS-C sensor performance and flexibility in a MFT body, honestly, I need to look no further! The GH5(S) and E-M1 Mark II camera bodies... I don't think you can do much better than those designs, incl. vari-angle touchscreen, sensor stabilization, dual cardslots, nice grip/ergonomics, dedicated audio interface incl. headphone port, great battery life, as well as just having a solid weatherproof body that's reliable and does not overheat. Also within the MFT ecosystem there is an abundance of choice regarding compact lenses native to the sensor size (something Sony's been neglecting for quite some years, they rather keep their APS-C camera body small... leading to all sorts of issues from overheating, screen dimming, ergonomics to overall lack of features (no dual cardslot, vari-angle screen, bad battery life et cetera); what they don't realize is the lenses determine how compact a system really is, so... raises the question, if you regard the A6500 as sort of a fullframe entry camera for the poor folks that can't afford a real fullframe camera just yet, but can start out with their APS-C A6500 and start building their lens collection before finally being able to afford one of their A7 or A9 cameras... then well... aren't you prioritizing the wrong things there? But indeed, I digress as well. xD The JVC GY-LS300 was an interesting product. S35 sensor, but MFT mount. Sort of had a lot of features and an alright price. Supposedly the EVF was rubbish and although the footage looked somewhat pretty, what they pulled from it wasn't very spectacular or flexible enough. Now the price has dropped and they've improved it a whole lot with firmware... something like that would've been interesting, but now basically the GH5S takes the win. Would be interesting if JVC would do a 2nd generation of that camera though. The concept of S35 with MFT mount has so much potential. And then you'd have a camera with built-in NDs and XLR ports. Agree with the EVA1, it kinda falls in no-man's-land and will be a tough sell for people that have been using Canon Cx00's and stuff since forever now, it's just not that interesting to make the switch.

The defense of Panasonic's choice here comes across really hollow, like those who say that Panasonic doesn't need good AF because people should be using MF anyway. Why would anyone buy a GH5s if they're "at a higher level"? Why not just use a Blackmagic Pocket with its more dedicated filmmaking controls and raw or the URSA mini, with all the huge advantages there? Are people using the GH5s who are not "runners and gunners"? Seems like if the GH5s had IBIS and AF that could compete with Sony or Canon or even Fuji, it would be the perfect camera for all those videographers who would never consider or even dream of getting a Red or renting an Alexa.

I might be wrong but I thought the GH1 audio had a multi-aspect sensor also

Great video. When you get your GH5s can you do a video on color matching with GH5 and other Panasonic cameras? Thanks. I'm hopeful the GH5s and GH5 will be a good pairing. Thanks.

I made a parody video of why I'm not buying a gh5s. It basically comes down to not being able to afford an extra camera right now just for youtube. lol - love your lighting btw.

Forget the GH5s, I think I own the exact shirt you're wearing. It's around here somewhere...Did you steal my shirt?

If you have a video about what to choose g85 or gh5 or g5s? Or maybe just stay with canon 1080p without 4k? I am thinking about improving my videos..

Sorry. Its just another camera without IBIS. Its a Sony sensor and has a different form factor. Panasonic did not want to have to redesign their IBIS system so it is without. Not sure who this camera is for. If, as you say, it is for more professional film makers, I doubt very much they would buy this camera over those cameras that do a much better job in low light.

Hey Caleb love your channel bro. I have watched all your video's about the Panasonic gh and s1 series. I am completely new to videography. My purpose is to make video's for my business: repairing phones laptops and tablets. Plus I would like to (hopefully somewhere this year) start with interviewing people. I love your passion for the Panasonic brand and you have convinced me to go with Panasonic. The question is should I go for Gh or Gh5s for what I want to do? Please help me out bro because I am planning to buy one next week. Thanks so much in advance, cheers bro

I can see what your saying but the logic is flawed from the get go.. No serious FILM maker who needs that level of control of sensor movement is using a GH5s. Simply not happening ever. Firstly its still not a Film camera, no proper audio & its micro 4/3rds. So your saying someone who is concerned over sensor movement is considering this over a RED/FS7, because thats the cameras real film makers look into. Being honest it comes down to economics, if they stabilise this what can they offer in the GH6.

Higher ISO is for run and gun not for controlled situations, the combination of high iso and IBIS are the perfect combo. Ultimately I think it was a bad decision.

i feel like the market they're aiming at would just buy a more expensive camera. i think the market of people who want the best quality video shot from a single person is a little underserved right now. this would basically be the be-all-end-all vlog or all-purpose camera if it had ibis.

The people who are wrong about this cam is because they don’t know any better. I’ve owned the gh5 as well. What I understood about the gh5 is: it’s got great everything except iso. 😂 that killed it for me.

Also ibis sometimes does crazy shit! Now imagine being on set, with an actor, who gets paying a shitload of money and all you have in 10 hours, minus 1 hour of lunch, minus setup time for the gaff and dp, minus time for actors to rehearse, minus minus minus! Every take counts, and yelling ibis fucked up after a succesfull take where actors hit their marks and focus was on point and lines where said correct, is not an option! Thats why ibis has no place on professional sets!

You didn't show it, but the standard 4:3 capture frame is bigger on the gh5s.
